I actually saw it last month but hadn't got around to sharing my important thoughts with the Azure Heights Pokemon Laboratory yet. These are as follows:

It was okay! The first half was better than the second, if the whole thing had just been Ryanchu Reynolds wisecracking in a quasi-noir piece I'd have given it an Oscar (which is obviously in my power to do). The action bits required to placate children were less interesting, also I did not know what a lot of the Pokemon were by that point in the film.

The number of children in my screening (a lot) was quite surprising to me; I thought that the main audience for this would have been nostalgic old people but Pokemon is clearly still a big deal amongst cutting-edge youth. I'm sure they'd have been able to help me out with everything above #386 in the Pokedex.

Nevertheless, there were still lots of Gen I Pokemon wandering around and a few other subtle touches (the reference to Mewtwo previously escpaing 'twenty years ago' surely a nod to the first movie?) to keep me happy. Plus, the cinema gave out Detective Pikachu trading cards for everyone who went to see it on the opening weekend so it really was just like old times. (For the second weekend they were giving out 'Pikachu ears' which I think would have been less good, unless you needed the finishing touches for your Pikachu fursuit.)

I basically liked it too. It had some serious problems, not the least of which being the two lead actors, but I liked the re-imagining of Ash and Misty and I liked that [SPOILER] Mewtwo isn't really the villain. It's not his fault he's a GMO.

I wish they'd just spent more time wandering the world and showing what it's like for all the humans and Pokemon to live together.

The scene with the giant mountain Pokemon things went on too long and was predictable and boring. Also that Jigglypuff looked a bit haggard.

But it was better than it had any right to be, and at least they kinda sorta tried to make it not suck. So that's something.

First movie I've seen in theaterssince Deadpool, figured why not. Actually, I've seen two movies this year because I just went to see Toy Story 4 this past Monday as well. Couldn't tell you the last time I saw two movies in one calendar year... the last movie I saw in threaters before Deadpool was Wreck-It Ralph in 2012.

It was forgettable but decent. Honestly, I think my favorite thing about it is that it's seemingly a movie that can be enjoyed by non-PKMN fans because they're really just an accessory to the people in this film. I think it did a good job of conveying the differences of what the world might be like with Pokémon instead of regular animals, without making them too much of a focus so as to be confusing or offputting to non-fans. Maybe that doesn't make sense from a marketing perspective, who is going to see this movie if not PKMN fans, but from a critical perspective I kinda like the idea: enough to keep fans happy, not so much as to drive away non-fans (or new fans).

I didn't get a card from my theater though, bleh. Dunno if they just forgot or were out since I didn't go till Sunday (literally the first day I had off since Easter... and the last till Memorial Day Sunday). I didn't know we were supposed to receive one until after the fact. Some of the mons choices were pretty weird.

I didn't notice, did they show real animals in the movie? Do they ever show them in the show?

Does anyone have a regular pet dog or cat?

Are they all vegetarians? I guess people are supposed to eat Chansey eggs, but yuck-to-the-motherfuckin'-fuck-no.
