Okay, I am thinking about getting one. It has a game (The Last Of Us) which, for the first time in a long time, I actually want to play. It will apparently do lots of other things, too, the most important of which is play my old PS1 games. What are people's opinions of the console? What other games are good? Is TLOU even any good? Should I just spend the money on beer and curry instead?
N.B. I am well aware that the PS4 is coming out next month; it just doesn't look that interesting to me.

...okay, definitely not the PS4 now that it turns out that it can't play audio CDs/mp3s or stream over a home network or be backwards-compatible with PS1 games or do anything useful. What a cracking next-gen console.

If you can get a PS3 with the free PlayStation Plus, I recommend it. I never have to go to the GameStop and though I don't always get the games I'd want most, there is always something to play.
I've played some crap games I wouldn't have otherwise played, but I've also discovered a couple of decent ones that turned out to be fun distractions. For someone like me who doesn't really keep up on gaming news, this has been helpful.
Also when I don't pay for a game, I don't feel obligated to get every stupid trophy. Having a sense of duty to a $10 used game is stupid anyway.
It's a better DVD player than a PS2.
Although maybe this deal will suck more once PS4 games start rolling out.

That seems to sum up the PS3 in general (at least from a casual gamer's perspective, and I am highly casual these days) - lots of 'nice to have features' which, when taken in combination, add up to something which would actually be really useful. The PlayStation Plus thing sounds good but I doubt I can get it for free. The stuff they make available to PAL regions probably isn't as good as in North America, anyway.
The model with the 12GB hard drive is £130 ($210-ish), which I suppose is reasonable enough. Maybe I'll pick one up on PS4 launch day just to mess with the shop staff's heads.

I never thought to get a Blu-Ray and see what happens. I rarely watch movies on disc, and then usually only when I pick up something from the library. I wonder if the library even has Blu-Ray. I'll have to check.
In terms of "nice things to have", the YouTube app is sorta cool, although it seems like the content is restricted in some way. Either that or the search sucks. In any case, I've used it to watch full movies, even with my crappy DSL connection.
I have not tried to watch a movie downloaded from the PlayStation Store.
If you do get the Plus thing, be sure to get a big fat hard drive, because some of these games are totally bloated. I imagine it's mostly cut scenes.
Also be prepared to wait to play games, even if you buy the disc. You'll load the sucker up and then you have to wait for version 1.2 to download before you can even play, and suddenly it's the next morning and you're too sleepy to play.
Well, if you're Europe, you probably have faster Internet.
Come to think of it, you might want to look into the size of these patches and other downloadable stuff. Drive space should be cheap, probably not worth skimping there.

You'd certainly think so in 2013, but the 500GB variant pushes the price up to £200 ($325), which is crazy for a console at this stage in its life. From my reading around, it looks like you can swap in any old 2.5" hard drive to replace the one it ships with, so I'll just do that if/when the 12GB runs out.
In terms of apps, the BBC iPlayer is the big one for me, but YouTube sounds like it would also be good, especially for all my dancing cat needs. Also SoulCalibur II was apparently re-released in HD for download the other day. I have very, very fond memories of the original SoulCalibur on Dreamcast so am quite tempted to get that. Wipeout HD goes into that category, too.
The XBox One came out here today (PS4 is next week) and it all seemed a bit subdued. There were the midnight openings etc. but it didn't feel in the least bit heady. The last console launch I paid attention to was PS2 and I seem to remember everyone losing their minds over it. Maybe living in the future isn't so exciting after all.
