let's talk about the new consoles. did anyone wait in line for a PS3 last week? we tried to, but it was fucking hopeless. i took off work thursday and we went out wednesday-fucking-night at 1AM or so with all our camping gear, but every retailer in town already had more people in line than they had PS3's in their inventory. we checked Target, Circuit City, Best Buy, Sam's Club, two Wal-Marts, and a wal-mart and Best Buy a town over. no fucking luck, man. on the upside, we only ended up out in the cold for about 2 hours or so before realizing we were totally fucked and heading home for good sleep in a warm bed.
Of course I wasn't going to keep the thing. the Nintendo DS with a piracy cart has been more than enough to keep me busy. but come the fuck on -- a $1400 payday for 26 hours playing videogames and sleeping in line? i'll take that deal. but when you stretch it out to a 3-day wait in line (which is much closer to the reality of the sitatuon) it's not worth it anymore.
i'm still going to camp for the Wii tonight. I haven't decided if it's for keeping or for selling; I was kind of excited about Wii Sports, but I'm not a Zelda fan and the rest of the launch lineup is fucking abysmal (though I wouldn't mind giving Downhill Jam a whirl). while I like the direction Nintendo's taking this generation, it really bothers me to shell out 250 bucks for a bluetooth-enable GameCube in fresh packaging. if they were going to make the hardware this simplistic, they should have just sold it as an optional bluetooth attachment for GameCubes. there's nothing I hate more than being pushed to buy shit that I already own, and Nintendo does a lot of that. it's irritating enough that they won't just sell out and produce games for better consoles instead of forcing me to buy their crappy hardware (DS notwithstanding, of course -- much love) just to play a handful of games that they're too stubborn to produce elsewhere. sure, the Wii-mote looks fun, but on its own it doesn't really merit buying a $250 piece of technologically inferior hardware.
Micro Center has the 360 Core Edition for $200 after rebates and the 360 Premium for $300 after rebates. Think about that for a second. If you're like me and have waited to go next-gen until the competition showed their cards, that makes the 360 look really fucking attractive. You could pick up a core box with Gears and be fragging shit like the dickens for $250. or pick up a Wii with overhyped (but admittedly cool-as-shit-looking) minigames for the same price. where's the better value?
share your thoughts, gentlemen.

I used to think that I was only interested in the Wii, since the controller is very innovative.
I used to think that graphics werent' that important.
I've always been running inferior hardware and older games compared to what's bleeding edge at the moment. I just installed Myst V on my 1.2 GHz iBook last week, thought the graphics were "amazing", then I saw a TV ad for Gears of War (granted, it may have been pre-rendered), and the graphics blew me away.
So now I'm reconsidering.

Is there a freeware analog of StepMania for Guitar Hero? Because it is vital that I rock. Also it would be cool to annoy my neighbors with music that wasn't quite so gay.
Also can you play PS2 games with a PS3? I don't know what I'd use it for, other than Guitar Hero, but I thought I'd ask. I suppose you can't even get a PS3 before Xmas, but whatever. [ 11-25-2006, 04:42 PM: Message edited by: Mr. K ]

all around you are familiar faces, worn-out places, worn-out fay-ay-aces?
Gears sold me on a 360. I just picked up the $100 discounted Premium 360 at MicroCenter today. Plus, I'm told that you can flash the firmware and pirate games so that sounds hot. Had to wait in the cold for 7 hours in order to score it, but I managed to come out of black Friday with that 32" Westinghouse LCD HDTV that Best Buy had for $479. i'm still reeling from excitement.
hi-def + 360 + piracy = the sex
jef: you're looking for Frets On Fire. i'm told that it's very good -- also, I have a torrent that includes it along with all the Guitar Hero tracks ripped for it if you're interested. throw me an IP i can upload it to and it's yours.
i'm kind of excited for the 360 version of Guitar Hero with the wireless guitar. that'll be pretty excelent. unfortunately, i've got a PS2 with a legal copy of GH1 and two fucking PS2-only guitars that I need to sell now. I suppose I could probably get adapters for them and hook them up to the PC to play Frets On Fire, but that doesn't really interest me.
edit for juilfs: even though no Zelda game has ever succeeded in entertaining me (and I tried with Wind Waker; lord knows I tried), I checked out Zelda Wii pretty extensively. gameplay seems largely the same, only plus kooky motion sensors. and perhaps I've been looking at too many good graphics (which boggles the mind since the DS has been my #1 entertainer lately) but honestly I thought it looked like puke. sure, sure: graphics "aren't their focus" this generation, but come the fuck on buddy. we're paying them $250 for what could have been a simple attachment to our GameCubes?
i don't buy it. i sold my Wii on feebay for about $400 and used the profits to make my 360 a cheaper acquisition. i won't lie, the [Wii] still has its appeal and I'd say there's a good chance I'll even end up picking one up before the price drop. the fiancee likes it and my next-door neighbor's ladyfriend likes it too. we game with them sorta frequently, and they've both told us that the 360 is decidedly too much a "boy system" to get into, but the wii looks "like we'd love it". something that the girls can get on board with is a good investment, but if the only title out is single-player Zelda, you've got to face reality and recognize that you're still buying for yourself. wii sports is the closest thing to a party game they've got, and it looks vastly inferior to what a real, full-blown Mario Wiinnis (do you see what i did there) could be in terms of a cartoony, approachable tennis title. How is the actual PS2 game? If I've gotta buy me some geetars anyway, maybe I'll just go legit this time. Seems like the game content might be more interesting than DDR's, which is all about sweating and not screen noise.
And I ass/u/me there will be about a zillion PS2 games out there for me to look at, once I finish this Dreamcast port I'm still hacking away at.
Might be worth it, although playing a Sony game just doesn't seem right. Also it takes forever to change levels with that fucking thing. [ 11-25-2006, 04:46 PM: Message edited by: Mr. K ]

the PS2 game is amazing (and word is that the sequel is too), but a PS2 at this point in time is a badly-depreciating investment. i picked mine up secondhand explicitly for Guitar Hero and while it definitely ruled for that, I don't really touch it now and have come face-to-face with the unfortunate realization that I don't like paying for games and I'm too lazy to spend a weekend learning how to pirate games for it. gotta unload the shit, i guess.
give me a more comprehensive review of Frets after you dick with it for awhile. if it's any good I suppose I could just sell off my PS2 and GH while keeping the guitars and give it a go.
edit: i don't know what kind of sultry-shit furry porn games your twisted ass plays these days, but there are definitely a few system-exclusives i wouldn't mind gracing with my presence on the PS2. god of war, new soulcalibur game, apparently a Contra title. most of the supposed showstoppers were done better elsewhere, and final fantasy is for homosexual men. I don't really care about bleeding edge games, I just want something interesting. Granted, most of the stuff on that list didn't fill me with lust.
I've never played a Final Fantasy, but I played that horrible Baten Kaitos (or whatever) which was described as being similar, and if FF is even slightly like that, fuck it hard with a chainsaw. I couldn't give two shits about brooding teen anti-heroes.
I'm playing this Skies of Arcadia thing (still), which has semi-interesting graphics and an almost (but not really) interesting battle scheme, but the writing is really good, so I'm totally happy with it.
Doesn't PS2 have the game where you roll around the giant wad of stuff? I might need that.
Did that thing with the paintbrush and all the old skool Japanese art turn out to be anything other than a gimmick?
I know this is the system of Parappa, but after one night, I was done with it. Same with Um Jammer Lammy, which I didn't think was nearly as good.
As much as I like Walt Disney, I don't really care about the movie characters, and I don't know who those other fags in the game are, so Kingdom Hearts is out.
Anyway, I know I have no interest in an XBox, so I guess if I wanna play video games at all, I might as well get a PS2. I think I've sort of burnt through the half dozen GameCube titles I could ever possibly care about.
Does the PS3 play PS2 games? Not that there are any PS3 games I need to have (or even know about) either.
Also I'm pretty sure I don't care about the Wii at this point.

Mr. K: I couldn't give two shits about brooding teen anti-heroes.
Then you want to stay away from FF. I've heard that the latest game (number 12) is better in this regard, but I don't know by how much. It's supposedly a lot like an MMO but on a console. Also, no more random encounters (though that may have started with FF10)!
I'm playing this Skies of Arcadia thing (still), which has semi-interesting graphics and an almost (but not really) interesting battle scheme, but the writing is really good, so I'm totally happy with it.
Grr, I want to play that. Apparently, it's hard to come by these days and a collector's item (at least in Europe), so you may want to hold on to it.
Regarding good PS2 games:
The last game I played for the PS2 was Ico (originally from 2001, but it was recently re-released). I highly recommend it, but I don't know if it's your type of game.
It's a pretty slow-paced exploration game - you explore a huge trap-ridden castle, full of gardens, brigdes and contraptions (fantastic graphics, worth playing for that alone), while guiding a young girl (sharing your unfortunate situation of being trapped in the castle) by holding her hand (you'll be pleased to learn that despite this element, the game is completely devoid of angsty teenage love), while beating off evil shadow-men, who are trying to kidnap her, with a stick (there are other weapons too).
I thought Ico was an experience more akin to reading a novel or watching a good movie than playing a game. I wouldn't describe it as a game, but more as an "adventure", however vague it may sound.
Your mileage may wary, of course, but if you have any interest at all in adventure games, I highly suggest checking out Ico.

I'm having to pass on the next gen for now due to my wallet not letting me get new consoles. I want a Wii most of all. Currently, compulsion-based gaming with imported Pokémon Diamond fuels me. I've had fun battles and traded with my friend in Chicago, which was my primary reason for getting it so soon. Screw the online battle sims.
PS3 will play PS2 games, but I've heard it has compatibility issues with some that could be patched. But I've also heard that it's incompatible with the PS2 Guitar Hero controller. Next-gen versions of Guitar Hero for PS3, XBox360, and possibly even Wii are probably inevitable with MTV's money in it now and all. Mostly, I use my PS2 for classic compilations that don't exist on GameCube: Capcom Classic Collection, Taito Legends, Atari Anthology, Activision Anthology, and Street Fighter Anniversary Collection (with Sega Genesis Collection and Capcom Collection Vol. 2 down the pipe). I also dig Amplitude, and I wanna check out Bully and I still need to get Soul Calibur 3 and I guess the Katamari games and Okami. [ 11-26-2006, 08:20 PM: Message edited by: PikachuThunder ]

gentlemen please continue your discussions of the Wii and why i should or should not buy one. my xbox 360 is currently in pieces while i attempt to figure out how the hell to pry the back piece off so that it can be firmware-flashed and forced to play scores of pirated software against its volition.
find titles that i will enjoy on this system other than Wii Sports and Zelda. it is a given that i will enjoy wii sports because it's freaky and simple and i like my women freaky and simple so why wouldn't i like my videogames like that BUT zelda has never interested me in the past and i certainly don't see a reason for that streak of not-interesting-me to end in 2006 so for real please recommend software that makes this system a contender thank you in advance and i bid you good day

I own none of the next-gen systems but I have had a chance to play Nintendo Wii thanks to some generous friends. I've always tended to side with Nintendo, but I have bought a PlayStation and an Xbox in the past and was pretty pleased with both purchases. The Nintendo Wii has a lot of promise to really make some fun, innovative games, which has really been my favorite types of games. But as of right now, there really isn't all that much out there for the Wii besides Wii Sports and Zelda that I can see. I'd throw Super Monkey Ball out there as a title worth checking out, but I'm a big fan of Monkey Ball games, but if you're not into the monkey-in-a-ball genre you'd probably not get too excited about that.
Also, what up long time no post.

zomg it's a jman.
The only forum I post at much anymore is my own, unfortunately based on a franchise far more pathetic than Pokemon these days.
As for the Wii, I got one at launch, though not really for any of the launch games. So far the best non-Zelda game I've bought has been Elebits, which is Katamari-inspired, except instead of rolling stuff up you grab it with a 'capture gun' and fling it around to find little creatures that increase your flinging ability. It's also the only one aside from Wii Sports that really couldn't work with a normal controller.
I've already lost a wiimote to someone going for a baseball swing and meeting the side of a table hard.
On Zelda TP- I think it's easily the best one yet, and general internet consensus seems to agree.

Any word out yet on how the GC and Wii versions of Twilight Princess compare?
Since I'm not sure I want to get a Wii just yet, but I wouldn't mind playing Twilight Princess, getting it for GC seems like a smart move - unless the GC version is inferior to the Wii version.

Aside from the obvious control differences, the GC version is a mirror version of the Wii. In the Wii, Link is a righty In the GC, Link is a lefty

The only inferiority that the GC version has when compared the Wii version (if you don't consider lack of free-pointer control an inferiority) is that the Wii version is capable of outputting in 16:9 widescreen, while the GCN version is not. [ 12-19-2006, 10:39 PM: Message edited by: JohtoMaster ]

No one cares (the thing's been out for Wii for a month), but I got Twilight Princess for GC.
It's very nice. I don't commit to videogames often nowadays, but this is a game I'll play.
Oddly enough, it makes me want to re-play Ocarina of Time. Princess has a lot in common with Ocarina, and I keep getting reminded of awesome stuff from the latter all the time.
