I went to a movie theatre that had some new kinda DDR machine. I think it was called "Pump It Up", but then I saw something else called "In the Groove" and it now seems equally likely to me that that was the name of the thing I saw.
Anyway, the steps were fast as hell, but they went with the music a lot better than DDR. Also they had mines.
Is this a thing I can play with my StepMania installation? Do I need a new pad? I have diagonal arrows on mine, but I think the center is dead.
Also if I can play with my gear, where do I get songs?
Also also fuck The Earth Light already. I just can't AA that fucker after like a year of trying. Fuck it hard, up the ass, with a cactus.
I had a flawless run up until the last insane patch of steps and then I noticed how well I was doing and started thinking about it and immediately fucked up the first series and fuck you fuck you fuck you. [ 08-04-2005, 06:46 PM: Message edited by: Mr. K ]

In The Groove is the one with mines.
No, you don't need anything special to play it, just a regular DDR pad and any recent version of StepMania. As for finding the songs, I don't know, you'd have to ask someone else.

That website should resolve any other questions you need. They do have other games on DDR Freak. Somehow though, I have a feeling you know about this website, don't you?
Ask G-I-V-E-R-A is my recommendation. See AvatarST for Pump It Up. I'm just some mild amateur (Ahahah... amateur. As if) DDR player who doesn't have any local arcade units

Cool, OK...I'll look for "In the Groove" songs. I think I have a membership on that DDR Freak page, so I'll look for songs there.
I hope newer versions of StepMania work with my old computer. I had problems with any versions over alpha 16, but the newer versions didn't seem to have anything I needed, so I stopped caring about updates.
Is "Pump It Up" the one that requires a button in the middle? I don't think my pad does that, but I only need one new game at a time.
I finished Simpsons: Hit & Run and just finished another Infocom text adventure this weekend, so I am hungry for more stink.
Thank you, kind nerds.

Thanks, although I am no expert, so any songs like the Paranoias or the Maxxen are way too much for me.
I downloaded this theme thing for StepMania that simulates ITG2, but I only got the songs for ITG1 just in case I hate it.
It looks like I can play DDR songs with the ITG config, which is cool, although the scoring seems different, so I'm not sure what to do about that.
I don't want to fuck up all my old high scores. I like that I am still getting better scores...it shows me that I'm not totally sucking (relatively speaking) or getting worse when I don't play for a couple months.
Most of the DDR forums are comprised entirely of people shouting omgwtfstfun00b back and forth at each other, but I am pretty sure I figured out how it all works. I haven't seen any songs with mines in them yet, but I only ran it once to make sure it's working. Since there aren't any mines in DDR, I hope that theme thing I installed included them.
Are the mines only in the psycho hard songs? If so, I'll probably never see them, which I don't think I'm actually all that upset about.
I like that Anubis song a lot, so I hope there are more like it.

hi. in the groove 1 & 2 are DDR clones derived from stepmania (yah, open source software tends to have that effect now even for the console and arcade). here is a site where i got an ITG song last week, but from your last post i guess you already found where to get those. i don't know anything about mines, but charlene seems to play just fine in plain DDR mode anyway.
yah pumpitup is the korean game that's been around for a while with five step spots including a center one. i own a pumpitup pad for the PC and the "perfect collection" mix from andamiro. the dance pad is hella expensive compared to DDR gear and i still don't play it all that much.

Mines are usually only in hard step charts, but there's an option to "add mines" to any song. Just press enter twice while choosing a song, and it takes you to the options screen.
If you liked Anubis, you'll love Zodiac... they sound the same.

Cheater: yah pumpitup is the korean game that's been around for a while with five step spots including a center one.
I don't think I could handle a center button. I'm pleased to know it would be too inconvenient to get a game that uses it. So...Pump It Up is that other mode in StepMania I never paid attention to, then. That's good, because that's a gayer name than In the Groove.
Also thanks for the link. That's where I got my SM files and other stuff from. Getting the actual songs was more of a pain, but not too bad to deal with once.
I looked a little more into ITG2 stuff and it looks like all the nerds are still arguing about the step charts, so I suppose I'll wait on those. If I haven't gotten sick of the 400 DDR songs I've got in the past year, I can probably survive on 70 ITG songs until they get their shit together.
I guess ITG2 is pretty new?
Biffster: Mines are usually only in hard step charts, but there's an option to "add mines" to any song.
Fuck that noise. Although I did see the "Remove Mines" option. I'm not ready to start cheating yet, though.
By the way, I love Tell. I'm a sucker for the classics and the song is hilarious anyway. I got mined the first time thru (my brain was going "OK, left, right, up, stomp, left, OMGCHEESEBURGERWTFPANICPANICSHUTDOWN, left, right..."), but the next time I was able to cope.
Granted, there only 4 or so mines in a pretty slow part. That's going to take some getting used to. My brain isn't programmed at all to take my foot off a space for no reason. I actually usually have no idea where they are. I just do my thing and ass/u/me they're safe somewhere and ready when I need them.
I guess it's like the freeze arrows, though...I hated them at first, but now that I've adapted, they're no big deal. Still, the mines seem more difficult.
If you liked Anubis, you'll love Zodiac... they sound the same.
Yeah, a little too much so. Bit too repetitious, but I like them both OK.
I also tried Romeo and Infection and liked them. I'll try your other suggestions later.
Frankly, I'm just happy that the game is playable. I had to fuck around with DLLs and had to delete and reinstall and manually edit settings and poop and poop and poop...also I am happy to report that the Medium songs didn't kill me. I can probably pass some of those Hard ones, but Expert knows what it can cram where.
I love the stats, though. The way it shows the high scores at the end is going to feed right into my OCD...
The scoring system is much better and the graph that shows where your combos were broken is great.
Also it's really nice how the arrows match the music so much better than DDR. Makes it a lot more fun.
Anyway, thanks for the help and support, guys...if you hear a couple of pops those are probably my old man knees giving out. [ 08-05-2005, 10:44 PM: Message edited by: Mr. K ]

Also what is up with the grading scale? So far I've gotten either S+, S, S- (satisfactory? sucks?) or F. I know what the F is all about.
Am I missing some other aspect of grading?
Also, when you're sorting the songs, is there an easy way to see what sort mode you're in? I couldn't figure out how to tell if I was sorting by artist, BPM, or whatevah. [ 08-06-2005, 12:49 PM: Message edited by: Mr. K ]

OK, I needed to update some config file. I noticed that sometimes I was getting stars and not even realizing that was a grade.
But now I've fixed the scale and am happily getting B+s. I guess the Ss are good. Got an A on Infection and an A+ on something really gay but nothing higher than 90% so far.
Looks like the ITG nerd community doesn't really have their shit together yet. You have to pluck stuff from all over the web and the forum has half a dozen sticky threads that are supposed to tell you what needs to be done, but they are mostly filled with idiots trying to brag about how awesome they are at this song or that without actually providing help.

Yeah, ITG is built on the premise that the 13-year-olds don't have enough dickswinging to brag about now that they've all passed PSMo, so there's really no wonder that their shit is all over the place.
Also the little garage startup got Konami pissed off so I personally find that hilarious. ~Uiru

Looks like just to be extra confusing, ITG2 is called "Pump It Up: In the Groove 2". Clueless nerds speculate that this has something to do with the legal issues with Konami, which may or may not be true.
Anyway, I'm having trouble finding a lot of songs I can play.
5s are OK to warm up, but I get bored with them about 60 seconds into each song. 6s are a little more fun, and after I've tried them a couple times, I can start trying to get A+s on them (haven't done better than A+ yet).
7s are where the real fun is, but they all have complicated extra steps in them that fuck me up. Closest I've come to passing anything in Hard mode is Torn, only because the extra arrows are a little spaced out and easier to find.
I am guessing that those yellow (or are they green?) arrows are all gallops? I've never really been able to do those, and I've always just picked songs that didn't have them in them. Probably because I still use 1x instead of 1.5x, because I have never learned to read 1.5x.
If I want to be teh mastar I know I need to go to 1.5x, but I have almost no interest in any songs 9 or above, so I've never bothered to pick up that skill.
The problem with 6s is that most of the series are just little 3-step things, which get repetitive and boring quickly. Maybe one or two 5-steppers are thrown in there for kicks.
Is there anything like Kick the Can (Heavy) or Jane Jana (Heavy) where they just give you a long series of steps without any fancy-schmancy stuff and just let you cut loose? Even something like Ba Kkwo (Standard) with a ton of jumps would be fun. Enough fussy stuff, I just wanna bounce around.
Anyway, I'm still enjoying Tell and Anubis and I like The Beginning a lot (although Medium is too easy and Hard is too hard).
Also I tried a song with hands and those are fun. I dunno if I'd like a song full of them, but a few during the good bits of the song is OK.

It's called PIU: ITG2 because Konami sued Roxor for using the arcade cabinets like DDR. They got around it by going through Andrimario.. the makers of PIU.

Try doing B4U heavy, Burning the Floor heavy, or Freckles heavy. For ITG I'd say Hybrid hard or maybe Pandemonium medium.

The ITG grading scale is as follows: ****: 100% ***: 99% **: 98% *: 96% S+: 94% S: 92% S-: 89% A+: 86% A: 83% A-: 80% B+: 76% B: 72% B-: 68% C+: 64% C: 60% C-: 55% D: <55%

Now, the interesting part is that Konami has already sued Andamiro, and Andamiro pays Konami royalties in order to use Konami's idea. (Konami has patented such things as stepping on arrows in time to music, as well as step judgements, the concepts of edit and workout mode, etc.) So ITG2 is still money in the bank as far as Konami is concerned... they're just sorta miffed that they're fucking up the advertising Konami doesn't pay for.

Fuck. Now I'm going to have to start blowing twenty bucks a week trying to clear something other than Butterfly on Heavy.
As for that Pump it Up thing... I tried it and instantly felt like screaming GAY FAGGOT GAY. I dunno why, I guess it's just because I'm too short to straddle the pad comfortably.

I'll check out those ITG songs. I have plenty of DDR songs to choose from. I don't like Burning the Floor...I'll have to try B4U, I haven't done that one in a long time.
I do a lot of Freckles, 1998, The Earth Light, Love Shine, Dream a Dream, etc. in Heavy and do just fine. Those are a lot of fun. The ones with all the trick steps just fuck me up. I'd really like to do Long Train Runnin' in Heavy, but I can't even figure out what I'm supposed to do.
I just need to watch it play thru with Assist Tick like a dozen times or something.
I still don't think calling it "Pump It Up" could at all help with legal problems, but it could just be that corporate synergy thing. Or they are purposely fucking with Konami for fun.

Artie: And here I thought I'd gotten past my DDR addiction when my crappy soft pad bit the bullet.
What does everyone buy for pads? I got a $30-40 one from buynshop.com that slowly got worse over the course of a few months until it pissed me off so much I couldn't use it any more.
Then I got a second one from Level Six which was pretty good and is still working, but it looks like they haven't updated their web site since last year, so who knows if they're still in business.
Obviously the metal ones would be the best way to simulate the arcade experience, but I don't always want that thing in the middle of my floor and I am an old man and smashing squares on a metal case is probably a bit worse for the knees than a soft pad.
Now I'm going to have to start blowing twenty bucks a week trying to clear something other than Butterfly on Heavy.
Spend 40 bucks all at once and practice the Heavies without fear of losing money on failure. I almost passed Look to the Sky (Heavy) at the arcade today, but I get bored playing at the arcade, because I can't push myself without losing.
If I can pass it at the arcade, it's something I can AA at home. (Hell, I can AA Look to the Sky (Heavy) at home too.)
Also arcades often have machines with shitty arrows that piss me off. "I AM STANDING RIGHT ON THIS MOTHERFUCKER WITH ALL MY WEIGHT, DO NOT BREAK MY FREEZE ARROW, ASSHOLE!"
I called the machine a jerk today when it failed me. Actually, I think the arrow patterns for the home version are slightly different.

Slutty purple arrow for Teh Truth(tm). I've noticed the arcade patterns are slightly off, compared to the home ones...
And yes, arcade arrows are fagtastic. Once, I was about three-quarters of the way to actually beating Love Shine on Heavy... and the left arrow died. Fucking gay. Really. Fucking. Gay.
That's what I get for going to celebration station, though. Bah, humbug.

That would work but if you want to make it much easier, put it on 2x-3x speed (depending on how fast you can read arrows). This song used to fuck me up so bad until I tried it like that.

I played ITG for the first time a couple of nights ago. It was pretty good. Playing on a machine with pads that weren't completely fucked helped a lot, too.
Charlene and Queen of Light on Expert are great fun. So is Kagami.
As for doing Long Train Runnin on Heavy, speed mods are your friend, though I don't know about 3x. Hell, the highest speed mod I use for anything in DDR is 1.5x...it amazes me that people can even read things after they put 2x and 3x on them.
Then again, maybe I'm just the crazy one there. It might help a lot with stuff like PSMO...I'm a bit afraid to try it, since one game is so expensive here.
