do you mean songs for silverman? i'm interested to hear another opinion about it. my friend and I listened to it and came to the conclusion that it's too whiny. hopefully it'll grow on me though

it was ok, definitely a lot more subdued and mellow than rockin the suburbs
the only song that really stood out to me was bastard, the rest kinda blend together into a mash of piano
not necessarily whiny, just decidedly more sober and down than his previous stuff

I feel it is not as whiny as it is preachy, which is still not that much. The only song I really have a problem with is Gracie.
Bastard is really sick because it's in pretty insane time signatures (goes from 7 to 6 to 5). You To Thank has some sick piano playing. All the songs really have very good piano playing.
Once you are able to accept the fact that Ben is never going to make the same kind of music he did with Ben Folds Five, it is easy to appreciate this album. He's just evolved too much as a person to be able to write the same music. The new album is overall pretty mellow, but I still like it. Not his best work, but definitely enjoyable.

Yeah, that album is actually enjoyable. And Shatner was in the music video for Ben's new single, Landed.
Okay, I saw Mr. Folds in concert the other night in New York. He was really good. Played a few songs from the new album, as was expected, but also played almost everything off Rockin the Suburbs. This was the first time I had seen him with a band, every other time I've seen him, he's been by himself, so I was really excited to see all those RtS songs with a 3-piece band. The stuff from the new album didn't sound out of place at all with his older stuff. He also played a couple songs from the EPs, and a small selection of Ben Folds Five songs (Boxing, Philosophy, Army, and One Angry Dwarf), which were all really cool. I was hoping to hear more Five songs, but whatever. It was still a great concert.
The more I think about it, I realize that Songs for Silverman is kind of like a follow-up to Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner by the Five. The Five had already evolved so much as a band that by the time they made that album they were a lot less "we're gonna rock the fuck out" and a lot more "we're gonna show you some mature, well written shit." Silverman is very mature also, but there is less rock and more jazz involved, which I really, my roots being in jazz and all.
In conclusion, his new stuff is good for what it is. He can still rock out if he wants to, he just doesn't seem to want to as much anymore, or he feels like he has enough solo material that he shouldn't play too many Five songs. I can only imagine how good the Five would be if they were still together, but on his own, Ben has made some great music. I still like the Ben Folds Five shit better, but who doesn't? Songs For Silverman is still a really good album and I'm glad it was put out.
