OK, so I finally had to ditch my cracked, but reliable monochrome cell phone and I got this new Nokia thing which looks almost exactly like the old one except it's slightly smaller and lighter and has this color screen that's impossible to see in the daylight.
It looks like the keys are basically the same and will be equally as easy to use on a rollercoaster as the old one, so it seems mostly OK, as long as I never try to use it in the daytime.
So, how do I get a ringtone (or a nice black background) on this thing without going thru a website that looks slightly less reputable than the average pr0n site and will charge me $39.99/month and also install spyware?
Sure, I could go thru the cell phone company's page, but my guess is that that's not what the hip kids are doing. [ 04-22-2005, 03:52 PM: Message edited by: Mr. K ]

Oh, OK.
It's a Nokia 3120. It had the fewest options available. Also it doesn't have an antenna that would poke my naughty bits and doesn't have any moving parts. My old Nokia didn't have a data card thing in it, so I'm still transferring all my numbers. I'm only up to G.
Fuck carpal tunnel.
Also did the guy who originally made the "crazy frog" noise get ripped off? He deserves his residual checks more than fuckin' Metallica.

I'm wondering the exact same thing. I got a Nokia 2650 when my 6210 (Best. Phone. Ever.) broke down, and overall, I am quite pleased with it, except the shitty-as-fuck screen (the daylight problem).
I tried accessing some MIDI (which is what these phones usually use for their tunes) files on the web through the phone's GPRS capabilities, but it didn't work. Might have better luck with images, I didn't try that.
I think it's possible to recieve them via MMS, so find a buddy with a tune you want, and have him send it to you. If your phone supports data cables (mine doesn't) I'm pretty sure you can just hook it up to your comp and cram it full of MIDIs and pics.
If they're gonna push this shit on us, I think they at least could make it *user friendly*. Can you even get a good monochrome cell made after 2000 which only does voice, SMS and stores phone numbers anymore?
With the current technology I'd wager they could have both excellent (relatively) sound quality, weeks of standby time, store hundreds of SMS:s and phone numbers, modern features like T9 (the wordlist thingy when messaging) and a fast user interface not bogged down with useless bloat like color or animations.
Unfortunately, people are willing to sacrifice all that for the ability to have an animated 16-colored bikini-clad ass as a screensaver.

Well, I think all this stuff is available and easy to use, but I tuned out anything that said I needed to pay $3.99 to download a few thousands black pixels to the phone in an attempt to reverse the contrast.
Also I found the Rockford MIDI after about 10 seconds of Googling. But the installation procedure didn't look too promising...I mean, I realize you have to give them your phone number to make it work, but I don't really wanna give Random Russian Hacker my phone number, make, and model.

Go to ebay and buy the CA-42 data cable for your phone.
Go to Nokia's website and download the PC suite software for your phone.
Now your can sync up with your computer's phone book and calender, upload/download files for your phone, etc.
Also, Howardforums is your friend.
PS
PPS I cut up the Perfect Strangers theme in a .wav and I am using that for my ringtone. "...standing TAAAAALLLLLL...." [ 04-22-2005, 08:29 PM: Message edited by: MewtwoSama ]

There is usually an option to decrease the brightness of the screen, maybe it'll help in the daytime. inconvient as hell though.
My old nokia phone allowed you to make customized (free) ringtones. Give it a try if you have the option. Just hit a few buttons and songs of angels comes out. May not be great, but you'll know when YOUR phone is ringing.

Lowering the brightness, if anything, makes things worse. It's just a shitty design.
Well, it looks like that cable is the right way to go, but I think that's too much work for something I just want to use to answer calls.
I thought there might be some site out there that could transmit the 12 bytes I need for free...
Thanks for the help, though, maybe I'll get bored later on and get more gear...

So...if I have a MIDI on my computer, what's the easiest way to send the thing to my phone?
If I get a friggin' cable, then I have to buy the thing (which is a pain) and then install some fucking software on the PC which isn't going to work and fuck around with drivers for 3 hours.
Is there some "send-some-shit-to-your-phone-for-2-bucks" web site out there?
This technology sucks.
It's already a fucking communication device, why do I need something else to talk to it?

Because it is more important that I get 10.7K of Tron action sequence music on my cell phone than hurricane shutters, I've been doing more looking into this...it turns out my phone can surf the web for only $0.03/K.
Sos, I just need to host the files and download them and allegedly they will be recognized as MIDIs and put in the right place. Or so I've been told.
Don't actually know how to do that or anything, but I'm reporting in.

OK, I finally got the fucker to work. It's actually pretty simple, except that is doesn't work a lot of the time, so I asked the flunkies at tech support how to do it and they told me a bunch of bullshit and then I had to make sure to ignore and forget everything they said.
So, I got about 7 songs onto the phone for less than the cost of downloading the latest Ludacris song or whatever.
Now that I know how to do it, it should be about 30 cents each time I wanna change the tone, which, based on my experience with my old phone, I'll never do again.
So, yay, I win. Well, until I see my bill and find out they meant $0.03/b or whatever.

How do you do it?
My phone can surf the web too, and I tried putting a MIDI on my webspace but the phone couldn't access the URL.
Does your phone use GPRS? Did you upload the file somewhere special, or just your regular straight-from-the-ISP web account?

Yeah, it uses the GPRS thing. I put the file on some webspace on this server, and then for the URL (which I set up as a bookmark because it often didn't get a decent connection) I put the midi file name in, so there was no browsing at all, just grabbing the file.
I also put it at the server root to save bytes and also gave everything little filenames, since I didn't know how many times it was going to take to figure out what to do. Also entering text on the phone is a pain.
So, anyway, the url looked like this: http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/1.mid
Then you tell it to Go.
And then it either doesn't connect and complains and tries to dial some phone number for no reason, or you get the little "Connecting..." message and a couple seconds later, it says "Tone Received" and then lets you save and rename the file.
You don't have to do anything special to make it disconnect.
What they want you to do, however, is use their "Media Mall" interface and browse their pages to listen to all the tones and look at images. If you do this, you'll run up a $20 bill in about 5 minutes.

God, Cingular's data plan is all kinds of lame.
Unlimited GPRS on Cingular: $25 Unlimited GPRS on TMobile: $5 Unlimited Internet on Cingular: $80 Unlimited Internet on TMobile: $30
Cingular does have EDGE though, but they might start charging extra for that.
PS, I was at the hospital today and found out goonwap.com is working again. You can get pictures of sad green robot or Happy Cat there, as well as the theme from Double Dragon.

Well, I've got my 11K, so it's good thing I don't need the intarweb any more. I don't wanna browse with my phone anyway.
The main thing with Cingular is that I can call anyone else on Cingular for free at any time, which is almost all of my friends. Also that rollover minutes thing.
Since everyone I talked to hates their cell phone company, I went with the one that was the least shitty in the given circumstances.

Cingular's plan is $3 or $4/month. Although the rates might be lower with Verizon. They usually make a point of not providing identical plans, so you can never make an apples to apples comparison.
