'Bout time. This is for the two people here who might enjoy the NBA.
East- Round 1: Detroit over Philly 4-1 Webber is getting a little too old and injured, and AI alone just isn't enough. Miami over New Jersey 4-3 I know it's a 1v8 seed and all, but with Vince playing like the old Vince, Kidd fully back up to speed, and the potential of Jefferson coming back, this could be a good series. Indy over Boston 4-2 The Pacers continue to amaze me with their play against all the odds. That, and it wouldn't be right for an Atlantic team to steal a series. Chicago over Washington 4-2 Granted, the Baby Bulls are a little banged up but the Wiz early season chemistry seems to have disappeared with their injuries. Even though they're all back, they just haven't been the same team.
Conference Semis: Miami over Chicago 4-1 Miami has two superstars, and these Bulls have virtually no experience. The absense of Eddy Curry to put a body on Shaq hurts too. Detroit over Indy 4-2 This one should be good and if I need to explain why you don't follow basketball whatsoever. I was at the Brawl Game on Nov. 19 and I must say it was the most amazing thing I've ever personally witnessed. Add that night to an already heated rivalry and you get a very exciting series.
Conference Finals: Detroit over Miami 4-2 Ok, so I'm a biased Detroit fan. But the Pistons have a strong starting line from top to bottom and arguably a better bench. Against a team defense like Detroit's, Miami's success will depend on finding production outside of just Wade and Shaq.
West- Round 1: Memphis over Phoenix 4-3 Here's my outragous-slim-to-none-chance-but-I'll pick-it-anyway selection. Maybe I'm a Suns hater. Maybe I hate their style. Maybe I hate all the hype. But the Grizz were 2-2 during the regular season against the Suns, including one win without Gasol, Posey, Wells and Wright. If the Memphis bench can take down Phoenix, then a full Memphis squad has as good a chance as any to take down this highly charged yet untested Phoenix team. San Antonio over Denver 4-3 Denver showed an insane steak after the All-Star break but unfortunately stepped back into reality the final fews games of the season. That, and the Spurs are the Spurs. Denver will make a series of it, but no way the Spurs go out in the first round. Seattle over Sacramento 4-2 Oh how the playoff seeding works. Perhaps the two weakest teams in the conference meet in the first round. Doesn't really matter who wins cause neither has a chance in Round 2. Dallas over Houston 4-2 Sadly, a team from Texas has to go home early due to this pairing. Coming off their strongest season in a long time, the Mavs are the strongest team from 1-12 and will exploit the Rockets lack of forwards.
Conference Semis: San Antonio over Seattle 4-1 Maybe I'm being generous, but I think the Sonics will steal a game. Dallas over Memphis 4-1 Dallas is gonna make some noise this year. Even if the Suns do win in Round 1, which the probably will, I think Dallas will take 'em in 7. If not, Memphis will be exhausted from their first round upset.
Conference Finals: San Antonio over Dallas 4-3 I dunno who to pick here. The West is totally up for grabs, unlike the East. If Denver wins in the first round, which is entirely possible, this all goes down the shitter. But I think this is the most likely outcome and this would be a great series with the Spurs barely pulling it out.
Finals Detroit over San Antonio 4-2 Unbiased again... Actually I picked this to be the outcome of last years Finals, and even though the Spurs didn't make it, the victor remained, so I'll stick with this again. Hope they can make it back-to-back. [ 04-22-2005, 11:26 AM: Message edited by: Fish ]

I will pick Denver because I like Earl Boykins.

No reason to post early-round matchups, as nobody in their right mind watches the crap anyway... d*mn slow-down, half-court offense, hack-a-shaq, "lets foul the other team even though there's less than 30 seconds left and we're down by 11" game should go the way of the NHL next season. The only teams that should be allowed to stay are the ones who average over 100 per night. Can't these teams understand that even the front office of the NBA is trying to make rules to RAISE the scoring average?!? Why do teams like Detroit claim that they "play the right way" when they hardly score over 80 points per night (making a general statement, I'm not sure how many they score a night, but it certainly seems like a piddly amount).
You guys can all cheer for the reigning champs... I'll ride my Suns to the NBA championship over Miami in 5.
EDIT: I may have been a little bias in my prediction for the finals. Suns over Heat in 6 (not 5). [ 05-21-2005, 10:09 PM: Message edited by: Turbo X ]

Just because Cuban didn't resign Nash doesn't give you the reason to hate him. He had one of the best single series of all time.
30.3 points per game 55.3 field goal % 42% from 3 point range 25 of 26 from the free throw line 6.5 rebounds per game 12 assists per game 1 steal per game
...quite the box score there for the MVP.

Like I've said in other sports forums, one team keeps their cool in pressure situations, the other one blows it. Hence, this series was over before it even began.
Spurs in 5
::EDIT:: I never understood why Game 5 is played in the lesser team's arena. Doesn't this give the lesser team an advantage? If the series was 2-2, it essentially turns into a best-of-3 series... but the first game would be played AWAY from the better team's court. This makes no sense to me.
Also, if you want to make the rebuttal "but if they play Game 5 at the same place as Game 4, then they don't have to keep traveling from city to city (i.e. traveling to different cities between each of the last 4 games) that it gives the players no rest", then I offer my re-rebuttal. The NBA spaces their games out so much, especially in the early rounds of the playoffs, that rest turns into rust. Remember, it's the same team you've been playing for the whole series, you shouldn't need an entire 2 days to "scout and prepare" ![[Roll Eyes]](rolleyes.gif) [ 06-12-2005, 07:00 PM: Message edited by: Turbo X ]

It's all about travel. It's why the conferences are divided into East and West and why you play more games in your conference than in the other.
If you look at the way the regular season is set up, when a east coast team like Boston goes to play their road game in say Los Angeles, they'll have a "road trip" usually consisting of four, five, six games all played on the west coast so they dont have to fly across the country multiple times; everytime they play a west coast team.
I would assume the finals format was originally set up this way in the early days of the NBA, I can't imagine they did all their travels via flight like they do today so for traveling sake it was much easier to do a 2-3-2 format when pitting teams on opposite sides of the country.
Why they continue to do so today is beyond me, and also the whole East/West thing is shot to hell with teams like Minnesota and Memphis being in the Western Conference. But the above was their original logic, perhaps they just haven't seen reason to change it.

The NHL uses 2-2-1-1-1 for all series. In hockey, home ice advantage can be pretty significant, so they don't let anyone have 3 games at home in a row.

Home court is huge in basketball too. And with a series like this, it might turn the tides in Detroit's favor. San Antonio only lost three home games in the regular season and took the first two in the series, but if Detroit can take their three in a row at home, they go back to San Antonio in a closeout game. The Pistons haven't lost one of those in a long, long time.

I asked my expert baseball resource and he says that it is usually 2-3-2, but that TPTB can pick either way, and that for at least a decade they've been 2-3-2. Now, given that my assumption that they were 2-2-1-1-1 was based on a memory of a conversation I had at least a decade ago, it's very likely that I'm just remembering the ONE year that they did it the other way.
And I promise, no more posting for a while (after this, of course). [ 06-17-2005, 05:57 PM: Message edited by: pkthunder ]
