I read some online reviews of the new Paper Mario game and the new X-Men game. Both got glowing reviews, but ever since Black and White, I've learned not to trust them.

Anybody got these games? The PM reviewers seemed to at least successfully identify what made the first one so good, although I don't like that Goombario has been replaced by a chick.

I guess I could live with it...

I've not had a chance to play either game, though I really want to. However, my friend got Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door and she says it's as good as the first one and is living up to all the good reviews. The most important thing to keep in mind is that Peter Molyneux had nothing to do with these games.

I was not impressed with my experiences in X-Men: Legends. I played the GameCube version, but I do not believe the controller or any other GameCube folly made the experience unrewarding. The game is essentially Gauntlet with X-Men and unless you're a huge Marvel nerd, you'll probably find it average to above average. With 23 (I think thats the final number) playable characters (you have to unlock them as you progress through the game), it seems to me that the quantity and not quality of playable characters is apparently good enough for Marvel fanatics. The game's style is lacking - cell-shaded characters on a traditional 3-d background and 3-d interactive objects - and mostly just confused me (why cell-shaded?); it's no WindWaker, thats for sure.

I haven't played the new Paper Mario yet, but I suspect it will be a worthy purchase and a good play.

Thanks to my contacts I got to see the final version of Paper Mario 2 before anyone else [Razz]

Simply puts, it rules... They uped the graphics, Mario seems to have no "edges" so to speak...

Lack of Goombario & Female Boo w/ fan is unforgivable however, but I degress...

The best part for me so far with PM2 is the fact that the max level is now 99, and thats also the number of BP you can have. With all of my Power Plus, P-Up D-Dwon, and All or Nothing badges, Mario is doing 17 points a turn. Which is nice considering that the highest boss HP total in this game is 200. Overall, better than PM1, but like you have said, I have found myself missing Goombario on more than one occasion.

X-Men Legends is an excellent game, (I'd rank it right up there with Metroid and Zelda games) but it's a little short. I've already beaten it, and I don't have much desire to start over again already. That means once Rogue Agent comes out, X-men Legends is probably gonna be going on a self for several months.

I've heard great things about Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, but I haven't even played the first Paper Mario yet. I've just never gotten around to it.

I'm taking a wild guess here and assuming someone may have gotten Midway Arcade Treasures Volume 2...

You are correct, sir.

Also Paper Mario 2.

I've only played an hour or so of it, but I like it so far. I miss Goombario, but Goombella is a Science Chick, which makes things a little better. Plus she's kinda funny.

Best part so far has been the 3 Goombas hassling her like construction workers.

Looks good so far...

Bah, Paper Mario 2, like the N64 version, is too enjoyable/playable for it's own good. Though it's not technically "shallow", I've still sped through it due to playing it like crazy. (I'm on the last chapter I think). It would have to be like double the length to keep me at bay.

Only about 3 of the partners are clones of the older ones, but they all make up for it by having more concrete personalities anyway. I can't say I really miss any of the old partners to be honest. Goombario I can understand, but Bow got ridiculously bad once the enemies started having any kind of defense if I remember. The "Spark-I-cut-through-defense" thing dominated.

As it's essentially an all-round extension/improvement, I don't think anybody who enjoyed the first could dislike it. Only possible complaints are that it could be more difficult (like the original) and the levels/towns are less Mario-like, but do you really need a tribute to Mario 1/3 in every single post-NES/SNES game?

I also got Tales of Symphonia, but from the hour or so I played of it, the characters and the plot were the cheesiest I've encountered in a long while (which wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't taking itself seriously.)

As this was the first game to make me consciously consider whether I'm a nerd for playing/asking for it, I'm contemplating asking the gift giver to take it back and replace it with Pikmin 2 out of spite. Is anybody going to reassure me that the plot/characters get more bearable/less paper thin and the dialogue gets less forced/unnatural later on, or is this going to be another case of a highly rated game where I don't get the rating?

Slutty purple arrow for posterity.

Anyway, I got... a teddy bear, and $40, which I blew on about 6 video games yesterday. (Magi Nation is too damn fun for a $3 game.) After X-mas sales pwn.

As for Tales of Symphonia, keep playing. It gets better. [PBJ Time!]

I thought Dav1dL locked himself in his closet with a bag of tofu and jug of water waiting for the next Fire Emblem game to hit the British shores.

Nobody can own like Watt, and our new regular-attack-ignores-defense partner is not worthy of general use. [Mad]

I would also recommend continuing to play on in Tales of Symphonia. While the plot is slightly cliche, I am totally addicted to the gameplay. Plus, if you don't continue on, you won't ever meet the big-breasted, no-shirt-wearing, female ninja!

Oh, and it's not "newbies", it's "proles". Nothing wrong with being new to the game if you're not stuck in the working classes. Hey, if we're going to be elitist, may as well go the whole hog and refer to the idiots as a lower social rank... - CatGonk at SoaG

I finished PM2 a day or two ago. The final boss was fun, as it had some degree of difficulty.

I'm still regreting speeding through it so quickly, as I discovered there isn't a whole lot to do after the final boss. After the Pit of 100 trials, I'm not sure I'll be playing it for a while. It has renewed interest in Paper Mario 1 though, which should feel practically new due to the length of time it's been left untouched.

I kept TOS, as I figured that many reviews couldn't be distorted. I may do a Super Metroid with it though, where trying to work out exactly what everybody else is finding so stimulating about something apparently dull continually draws me back to playing it.

Okay, after replaying TOS afresh it's nowhere near as bad as I initially made it out to be. The intial bad impression was probably because I was immersed in PM2 or something, as so far it's about equal (though if the story/dialogue continue to improve which it has already done, it may well be better.

This probably means Sonuis will stop avoiding this topic like the plague.
