I don't know how many of you are still young enough to not already have picked out your future career or life goal, but I'm still in high school, although a senior this year, and of course, soon applying to schools. If you're curious, I'm only applying three places: Penn State (also applying to their honors college), Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University. My intended major is going to be computer science - with probable emphasis on artificial intelligence and video game design/theory and possibly, depending on the school, information technology.

I know it sounds like such a childish dream - I'm sure every one of you has at one point been like, I want to be a game designer. I don't know if I'll ever be a game designer, such few jobs exist for that, but I'd be just as happy being a video game programmer for a period of time. I'm fascinated specifically by AI programming.

I plan on getting my bachelors degree from one of those fine institutions and going directly to graduate school while working somewhere. I am almost 95% sure this school will be Carnegie Mellon for my masters in Entertainment Technology, or CMU's video game degree.

From there I'll get a job in the industry as a programmer and work that gig for awhile. Most programmers get burned out after some period of time, and at this point I'd probably go back to school for my Ph.D in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence/Game Design and Theory (if such a degree will exist at that time, I'm sure it will) and teach Game Design and theory at a college.

Game theory really fascinates me.

The best part is if this whole video game thing doesn't work out, while that would be a bummer, my backup jobs, ie traditional computer science jobs, actually pay more money and are in greater demand. But I'm hoping to not have to worry about that.

Anyway, thats my current goal in life. I think things are gelling pretty well. I'd have to credit my experience at the Pennsylvania Governor's School of Excellence in Information Technology, which is a 5 week camp I was accepted into, for pushing me to pursue this dream. I took a Game Theory class there, as well as had a week-long Game Programming seminar.

With that, anyone else have some cool future plans?

Plan A:
I hope to be accepted into Bachleor of Software Development at Seneca College. It is a 4 year year course, so I'll be busy until I am 23-24. Between now and then my goals will change. It may turn out that I was on the path to my dream job or on the dirt road to misery.

I hope to go into Engineering sometime in my life. Everything facinates me, from screws to cams, signals to transistors, engines to lightbulbs. Most of us have gone our entire lives living with the simplest devices that are anything but simple.

Plan B-Z:
Buy a baseball bat. Make fake 911 call to a rented motel room. Play porno tape and watch officier be confused before I smash his head from behind. Steal gun, baton, and car. Buy/make suicide vest. Drive around and shoot people until I get caught, making sure to always be on the move and in the dark. When the officiers get close to arrest me, discharge the vest.

I prefer plan A

I graduated last May, and now am enjoying life as a slave for corporate America. Ideally I'll want to work a couple/few years (hopefully passing the CPA exam in a reasonable time frame) and then head to back to school. PhD in economics is what I really want, though I might end up just doing more business administration crap.

Also have considered Peace Corping it up at some point, but I dunno if that's gonna happen....

I dunno about this "major" and "minor" business, since I don't live in the US of A, but I'm studying physics at the university.

I don't really have set goals, which complicates things for me.

It would be cool to be a researcher and play with the machines, crunch calculations on a huge mainframe, stay up late in the lab going only on caffeine just to get those results you're after, but it's not my "goal", not something I really try to acheive.

And that makes me less motivated, and I don't study properly. I thought that at this point, I'd be able to study just for the sake of learning, since the courses I'm taking are indeed very interesting and teaches totally new stuff, but it's not enough to make me open the books in my spare time.

Hell, I'm browsing Azure right now instead of studying for an exam in thermodynamics next monday...

A Communications degree can prepare you for a fine job in either the janitorial or food service industries.

If you're going to have a bullshit major, make it a fun one. You're getting the little sheet of paper either way, so you might as well enjoy yourself before you settle down to a life of office boredom.

i don't see why not. i can say with some assurance that i will never have as bad a job as i had last summer (10+ hours a day painting houses for 3 months), and i got through that one alright, so i feel i can do anything else with ease.

plus i plan to devote at least some time after college to trying to get well known playing music, but if i can't, whatever.

i have also considered politics, government, sports business/statistics/something, law school, etc...i have no idea what i am going to do with my life, but i suppose i have quite a few options and some time to actually figure it out

I'm not saying you can't do it...I'm just saying that you can do any job you want and now is the time to choose the course your life is going to take. Knowing that life never turns out as you'd hope, doesn't it worry you that you're already aiming low?

It's the rest of your friggin' life, you might as well try and start off on the right foot.

When you're young, you can change jobs whenever you want, but once you get married with children (which comes sooner than you'd expect), you're locked in...

Well I would've liked to do engineering, but it's way too late for that now. I would've had to have known that in high school, and in high school I thought I was going to play music for the rest of my life.

And I don't feel at all like I'm aiming low by being an econ major. The econ classes are the best classes I've ever taken (even better than my music ones) and I really enjoy it, and as I think about it, I probably enjoy econ a hell of a lot more than I would've enjoyed engineering. At this point I don't know how I could aim higher, but I suppose that could just be my opinion on the matter.

I really wanted to major in economics at first, but it is pretty soft at the undergrad level...I I guess I'm kinda glad I went with something more tactile, even if it is more boring. Still, I think I ended up taking so many business classes that I missed out on some of the more broad liberal arts exposure :/ Actually, even more than that I just wish I took some Math beyond Calc 2 so I'd be better prepared for an econ grad program...

I think it (econ) is a funny subject in undergrad, because a lot of people take it because they think it's easy, but just as many do because they're really pumped about learning econ.

Communications was part of the required cirriculum in business school, and it was definitely the worst class I ever took. God, what I load of fucking crap. I can't imagine how anyone would major in that...

Anyways, college was more fun than working.

Dweedle: Well I would've liked to do engineering, but it's way too late for that now.

Too late for what? Now's the time to do it, if that's what you really want. You're not going to get another shot at this, unless you have some kind of mid-life crisis.

The econ classes are the best classes I've ever taken (even better than my music ones) and I really enjoy it...

Oh, well, that's different. If you enjoy it, then OK. Pretty much everything you've said up until this point was about how you could make a lot of money with that degree, which is a pretty shitty reason to go into any line of work, unless you're actually looking forward to the mid-life crisis thing.

gruco: Communications was part of the required cirriculum in business school, and it was definitely the worst class I ever took. God, what I load of fucking crap. I can't imagine how anyone would major in that...

There's a lot to Communications. Film school is usually in the Communications College, and Film can be a fun major. Same with Television Production or even Journalism. Taking one class in Communications sounds like taking a single Arts & Sciences class, which wouldn't tell you jack about the possibilities...

pk: When are you expecting to get married and have children? And when were you expecting that to happen when you were his age?

I'm just talking in generalities, because it's the most likely outcome. I could have been married (and divorced) twice by now, and I feel lucky that I opted out. One of my exes has 3 kids now, which is fucking spooky as hell. Dodged a friggin' bullet there.

Anyway, I've never expected kids, but most people do. Most of my friends are married and either have kids or a bun in the oven. Or cats, if they were lucky enough to find a chick who doesn't want kids.

Well, how many film majors and journalists go around calling themselves "Communications majors"?
I don't really see it as the same thing.

For the sake of specificity though, it's "business communications" that is complete crap.

I would have had to have taken much different classes in high school to be able to do engineering. If I tried to switch to engineering now, I'd be an undergrad for 5 more years, which would be pretty dumb since I'm a junior now, and already on pace to graduate late.

Oh, well, yes, that does sound like useless poop.

As for staying in skool for 10 years...you wouldn't be the first. If you think you're sick of homework now, though, try going back to it after you haven't done any for a few years.

It is ridiculously difficult, and once you get a little perspective in life, it is really hard to jump thru all the stupid hoops the profs set up for you.

Anyway, all I'm saying is that it's your whole life here. When you're 65, no one will give a damn if you graduated in 2004 or 2009.

Uh, new news, I just got asked to be in a band that could very well be signed to a major record label come summer/fall 2005.

It's not going to sound much like The Elastic Band. We were more funky. This new band is going to be more alt. rock, I think. I can't tell yet.
