Let me see if I understand their logic... If I have a party and play a bunch of CDs on my stereo, I owe royalties because all of my friends are listening to it without having paid for the CD?

Is this some kind of sick, fuckin joke?! How can they do that?! The fact that they are targeting dentists is even more absurd and makes me want to painfully loosen their anuses with a fuckin dental explorer! No one... especially not dentists for cryin out loud... deserves that kind of treatment!! Fuck SOCAN and fuck any other country's recording firms who decide to pull any sort of shit like this. I'm with TeLeFonE on this one.

Well, this is a fair bit different. The dentists are using the music in a commercial setting, presumably because they think it will help their business. So in a sense, they're making money from it (in the same way a radio station does) without paying.

Which makes them more comfortable, which makes them feel better about their dental experience, which makes them return to that dentist, which brings in income for said dentist... profiting off the music. Still pretty fuckin sad.

Can't they just say that they are playing the music to help them better do their work, and that the patients aare just inadvertantly overhearing it? The reason they're playing it over a speaker system is because that way you don't have stereo equipment in the room.
