As the year winds down, its time to irrelevantly argue which video game was the best of the year. I have a list of my top 5. Here we go!

Coming in at 5....
Viewtiful Joe (GameCube)

Brilliance. I don't like very many Capcom games.. the Marvel Vs. series is probably my favorite, and even then its just a button mashing experience. This game takes an old concept of 2D platforming and turns it on its ass. This is meant in a good way. The graphics are a new blend of cell shading and 3D polygons, with an artistic style and flair thrown in and really adds a lot of the character to the game. Joe is probably my new favorite character this whole past year. The gameplay is tight and action packed, with combos and superpowers being used almost at will. The upgrade system works well. The problem with the game is its short life span and moderately low replayability. Overall, a wonderful job creating a create new series. I look forward to spending more time with Viewtiful Joe.

Here's.. number 4!
Mario And Luigi: The Superstar Saga (GameBoy Advance)

Paper Mario was one of my favorite games on the N64 and probably second favorite RPG of all time (Skies of Arcadia takes that crown, but thats another story). This game takes a lot of similar ideas from Paper Mario, but adds enough new items to create a new dimension of gameplay. Being able to control both brothers allows for a lot of puzzle solving and allows for some interesting battle moves. The simplistic battle system is also great for me. The graphics are among the GBA's best. What really sets this game apart and adds a lot of charm to it is its dry, but funny, storyline and in-game commentary. "I HAVE FURY!!" Nuff said.

At 3...
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Xbox)

Star Wars dork's dream. I'm not a very big fan of RPGs like KotOR, yet it still makes 3 on my list. The game is massive, emersive and makes you feel like you are really in the Star Wars universe. The gameplay is pretty lame in my opinnion: Its sort of a quasi-turn based system. I always just think I should be controlling my badass light saber wielding character and end up pushing buttons in hopes I can actually do that. Its not really very fun watching your character do those moves. The graphics are also pretty jaggy to me and that really bugs me. But the characters, well most of them save Carth and that stupid blue bitch, are pretty cool and well developed and the story is way cool. The ability to be dark/light is also awesome. In the end, despite all the negatives this game has for me, it still is enthralling enough to make 3rd.

In at 2...
The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker (GameCube)

I'm not a big fan of the Zelda series. There's something about this game that really touched me, though. The graphics are neat - really, they are. Its fun to play with such a neat new atmosphere. The gameplay is top notch - nearly identical to Ocarina of Time, but is that so bad? The towns themselves are full of life with each character going about his or her buisness and logically doing things. Its awesome to just walk around town and see characters living their lives. Its really a sign that video games ARE art, as abstract as that may be.

The Game of the Year, in my estimation....
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (All Platforms, Xbox is the best)

Orgasmic. If you don't own this game, I don't really know what to tell you other than go and pick it up. The animation is more fluid than any other game ever made. The gameplay is top notch - running up and across walls is not only fun, but vital to completing the game. Mastery of jumps, use of walls and cliffs, swinging on poles, climbing pillars, its all in here. Battles are long and flashy - but realistic. The Dagger of Time is implemented nearly perfectly - the ability to reverse time is not only cool, but really helps make the game a lot less frustrating. Graphics are top notch. The major concern here is the camera, but that is always a problem in games like this, and also the frustration level, which is rather high. But in some ways, the frustration level is good - you're always going to be wanting to beat the puzzle, just so you can see what puzzle, even more difficult and large than the last, lies ahead. Masterpiece.

These games are all great. Ok, your turn. 3... 2... 1... ARGUE!

5: Soul Calibur 2
4: morrowind/expansion packs
3: Sword of Mana
2: MK:DD
1: FFTA

Some of these other games like Mario and Luigi would be there if i got to play them. As for WW, i would just like to note i hated it. Not really just for the cel shaded thingy, but I seriously think it should have ended (or been seriously reconsidered) after OoT, MM sucked too.

On another note, FFTA was great, but once I played Digaea, I just couldn't go back to it. Why do people put FFTA on their favorites list when Disgaea just plain does everything better?

Soul Calibur II (PS2 controller rocks, hand cramps and sweating on Xbox)

FF:TA (ooh snap i love them strategies, just my eyes are killing me)

Socom II (killing with friends is cool, as is fucking with noobs)

SNK vs. Capcom (meh, kinda shitty, but where else can you play as Zero? And Violent Ken?)

Those are the big guns that I'm loving, I can't really think of a 5th that's really worthy

In alphabetical order:
-Beatmania IIDX 6th Style (I'm pretty sure this came out last year but it's new to me)
-Dance Dance Revolution Max2JP/Max2US/Extreme/Party Collection (It's been a good year for DDR)
-Fire Emblem (I thought the game ended after a few hours. Then I found out that I had been playing the training levels.)
-Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3: Mario's eReader Adventure (Tanooki Suit *scan scan scan scan scan scan*)
-Sword of Mana (Seeing the PSX do the hyper artsy crap was one thing, seeing the GBA do it is entirely another)

Games I haven't played but want to:
-Final Fantasy X-2 (the 20 minutes I spent with it the other day don't count)
-Fatal Frame II (mmm, schoolgirls)
-Disgaea

Morrowind will ALWAYS be game of the year. The sheer size of the world, and infinite gameplay because of the Construction set makes it an ideal Roleplaying environment.

I've done some small mods for it, as well as a larger one I'm working on that adds 6 powerful creatures to the exterior of Vvardenfell and an undersea shrine with 9 or so floors...ending with a final battle against the Omega Dragon alongside an army of soldiers for support.

Morrowind > everything

BTW, for those of you who do not have Prince of Persia (including me), this month UBI Soft is having a promotion where when you purchase Prince of Persia, you get Splinter Cell for free. This is being done because the game is selling considerably under expectations. Also, the GCN and Xbox versions of PoP have been cancelled for the UK.

My top 5 games of the year:

5. Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
4. Ratchet and Clank 2: Going Commando
3. WarioWare Inc.: Mega Microgame$
2. Viewtiful Joe
1. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

I've yet to play Beyond Good & Evil, which might make it into the top 5 considering all I've heard about. This is also another game (from UBI Soft) that has TANKED HARD. The GCN and Xbox versions have been cancelled for the UK also, and after only two weeks of release, the GCN version is now $19.99 at EB, while this coming Sunday, Circuit City will have the PS2 version for $9.99. I've heard this game is brilliant, and you should do yourself a favor and at least rent the game.
