LOL is that for real?

So if I understand, basically you make a deck of like 250 some odd cards and stick this in there and just hope you draw it yes?

Cool...

I have a foil Battle of Wits. I gotta say though, Chance Encounter beats the hell out of Battle of Wits in sheer stupidity.

Some of those cards are just crazy. Are they like SUPER rare to come by or not? I could make a deck based around purely those cards and win.

Yeah, the Odyssey block has some really crazy stuff in it. IIRC, I read in an article somewhere that it was part of the aim of the Odyssey block - to introduce new stuff which would make people say "WTF?! They printed that?!".

Platinum Angel from mirrodin is another recent example of a "WTF"-card (Artifact Creature, flying, 4/4 or something, "You can't lose the game and your opponents can't win the game").

I remember when I played mtg, mortal kombat and epic struggle were rather easy to attain, it's the others that are b0rked. The one game I played online I won via epic struggle in like 7 turns, which I consider good given the fact that i hadnt played in a year.

I think Epic Struggle and Mortal Combat should be pretty easy to use, considering you can just use cards like Squirrel Nest to tap your mana and make creatures.

Mortal Combat is probably damn near impossible. Epic Struggle/Test of Endurance are the easiest definitely. To simply put Epic Struggle, Earthcraft + Squirrel's Nest. With Test of Endurance, you could probably go Black/White creature control/life gain or Green/White Creature Swamping/Life gain.

I've made all of these decks before, and the one I seem to like most is the Chance Encounter deck by far... though I seem to be the only one who made an attempt at one in mass synergy to the card. It's too much fun watching your opponent's face freak out when you drop such fun cards like a Fiery Gambit, Mijae Djinn, Ydwen Efreet, Goblin Bomb, Game of Chaos, Scoria Wurm, and much-much more while having a Krark's Thumb in play. I've won with Chance Encounter quite a few times, but I seem to win more via Fiery Gambit smashings and Game of Chaos. Goblin Bomb had a victory once.

Edit: Also, you can't use Squirrel Nest to make a G and a 1/1 squirrel. It's either a G or a Squirrel.

I was gonna put Test of Endurance in my WB Cleric deck, until I saw it. Two guys dancing around wearing diapers is not something that I am going to play. So I got Worship instead. Much more useful, especially in the SECOND multiplayer game, when everyone realizes "oh shit, we have to kill him right away".

I don't know Magic too well, but I know that in high school one of my friends made a deck based on Battle of Wits. It used something called Crumbling Sanctuary to aid it and it had a 90% win rate.

Black/white makes an awesome Test of Endurance deck. There's tons of creature kill and control that help, and then you end up winning the game with Ancestral Tribute.

A Chance Encounter deck seems odd... I mean, what do you do when you have 9 luck counters and they disenchant?

Devoted Caretaker is a 1/2 onedrop Cleric that can give permanents pro-instants and sorceries. And there's that Razor Barrier (I think) Mirrodin instant that gives permanents pro-color. Clerics make things hard to kill. Once took five cards between two opponents to blow up one of my artifacts.

...and it took two turns to do it.

You get pissed off, and then decide to use an alternate method like Game of Chaos, Mass-Fiery Gambit, Goblin Bomb, or slam them with such fun cards like Mijae Djinn, Scoria Wurm, and Ydwen Efreet. Even go for the luck bomb with Orcish Captain.

Also he's wearing a NIN shirt. The creators of this 'Penny Arcade' must be found, dragged out in front of their parents' house, and have their left hands broken. Or left, depending on which hand they wank with.

As far as I know no.

Hah. Maybe your friend should toss in Coalition Victory for kicks, even though it's the easiest to win with. I didn't feel like posting a picture of it as well... It's not neccessarily as stupid as Battle of Wits, Chance Encounter, Epic Struggle, Mortal Combat, and Test of Endurance.

It's worth noting that Darksteel Reactor, a card from the upcoming Darksteel set, is basically the artifact cousin of these cards.

It's got a cost for 4, can't be destroyed, and lets you put a charge counter on it at the start of your upkeep. If you get twenty charge counters on it, instant win.

None of these cards are really good. Battle of Wits is barely playable, and is only broken in the "Five Color" format, where EVERYONE plays with decks that are around 250 cards (and have all five colors).

Name a deck that uses one of these cards, and a format, and I will give you a real deck for that format and show how it destroys them.

I think I saw a real Mortal Combat deck once, it was standard reanimator shit, but that card was put in as an alternate win condition- so it didn't expect to win with it, it was just an endgame possibility.

No card text reads "You win the game", MK, although some of them are like "If X, Y, and Z, then you win the game."

Like, there is a five color spell that does that if you have one of each color and land out, or something. I think. I'm not an expert on new shitty Magic cards or anything.

Okay Mr. K, I will now tell you why Magic is geekier than D&D.

The people who play D&D are big dorks, no doubt about that. They tend towards being escapist, socially retarded, and whimsical, which is actually sorta funny and sweet when it's all rolled into one. Kind of like a retard in a furry hat and mittens.

The people who play Magic are competitive. They are also socially retarded (generally), but they have one quality which makes them big, red, gay nerds. They are "strategic" and over analytical. And they think this is a good thing. Really, it's just a big fucking overcompensation for a total lack of instinct and intuition, which is likely what kills them in social situations. That is not sweet. It's like a snarly, arrogant retard. With no hat.

And other magic players look up to this. It's because they are stupid.

Well, as an activity, I still give D&D the nod out of the two. You can play Magic casually (that was the intended method). I showed my dad how to play Magic once. He liked it, but obviously not enough to deal with learning the timing rules and such. I doubt I could get him to game even a single combat in D&D, and picturing him trying to do anything in character is almost painfully funny.

Anyway K, if I had been in town another day you would have had the oppurtunity to shoot more things in the butt- but unfortunately, I remembered that my mom wanted an entire day with me, in Tallahassee, so that was that. The other party ended their session on pause, faced with a red dragon. I hope that will be memorable enough that they'll be willing to pick it up next year right where they left off (thus skipping the painful character generation), and I deliberately used a world I'm building for a long term campaign, so I won't forget everything in the universe (literally) between now and then.

In D&D's defense, I'd like to add that it really is just only in character for the gaming parts, and people don't take it too seriously. It's generally an excuse to be locked in a room shooting the shit with friends for a couple hours, but still with the pretense of doing something.

Plus, you get to kill things.

cfalcon: Anyway K, if I had been in town another day you would have had the oppurtunity to shoot more things in the butt...

That's OK. I really don't need to go out of my way to turn myself into a bigger dork than I already am.

I always refused to go to Counter-Strike LAN parties, because I never wanted to ever explain to anyone in real life that I couldn't catch a movie with them or whatever because I was driving 10 hours to go play a video game with a bunch of dorks that I play the same damn with every night anyway.

And I never want to ever introduce someone as a friend I met "at a LAN party".

It's bad enough that I have real life friends that I met, not only on a Pokemon forum, but my Pokemon forum.

I mean, Jesus Christ, just kill me now.

Look, playing D&D doesn't make you a dork, just as refusing to play doesn't make you less of a dork. As you point out since we are talking about roleplaying on your pokemon forum, which was your major project after you attempted to save a goofy ride from the corporate clutches of Disney, you are a dork. Shooting more things in the butt next year with that gatling composite longbow will not hurt you anymore.

I'd call it a draw. The LAN party is roughly the same as meeting someone in a Burger King to play Pokemon.

cfalcon: Look, playing D&D doesn't make you a dork...

The more you do it, the dorkier you get. It's a scientific fact.

...you are a dork.

As we've been discussing ad nauseum, there are definite levels of dorktitude. I can post on a Pokemon forum and I can post on a Pokemon forum wearing a wizard's hat. I'm a dork either way, yes, but they are not the same thing.

I am not embarrassed to tell a chicks I just met that I went to the mall to play Pokemon with a little kids. I am embarrassed to tell inanimate objects that I play D&D.

You know that I am all about embracing your inner nerd and doing whatever it is that you like regardless of what anyone else thinks, but D&D is really a special case.

Messing with Dork Elemental is dangerous stuff and if you aren't careful about it, you'll get used it, and if you get used to it, you can turn into that asshole at the comic books store who mocks MTG newbies and makes jokes about White Lotus cards in mixed company and snort-laughs with all the other losers.

I'm wearing a wizard's hat right now.

Do you have any proof beyond my words?

Also, I am shocked and apalled that:

hasn't shown up in this thread yet.

Playing D&D online is dorky.

Playing Magic in real life is dorkier.

Playing D&D in real life is dorkier than that.

Playing Magic online is the dorkiest thing in the world and you should be shot i mean what the hell is the point if you dont even get real cards that are "worth" something its bullshit i tell you

pokemon is the game of kings

She told The Associated Press she first realized her son was mentally ill in 1996 when he killed her oldest child, a 25-year-old woman who suffered from cerebral palsy, by beating her with a dumbbell.

I have no idea why you would put D&D online at the bottom of those things.

Honestly, I would go:

Magic
D&D
Online Magic
Online D&D

Granted, Online Magic is the stupidest, because you don't get cards, but you still have to pay real dollars for fake things- but in terms of nerdiness, you are just playing a fantasy based online game. Play D&D online, and you are actually teleconferancing with other people for hours at a time to roleplay- I can't imagine anything dorkier than that. In fact, when I read K's original post, that immediately came to mind, but it's still just more D*D.

Not that I'm above gaming online. I'm going to try out the sharing-a-hex map thing with a friend of mine who moved to Virginia after college pretty soon, in fact. Just that getting together with pizza, soda, and hanging out with people with a nerdy map in the middle and a stack of books while a couple of your friends play video games or watch football is way, way less nerdy than:

(1) Turn on computer
(2) Turn on INTERNET (anything is about 1.5x as nerdy online)
(3) Either:
1: Launch IRC, a geek application if there ever was one
2: Launch a program like OpenRPG to help you game online, so now you have gone and downloaded said nerdy program
(4) Type or talk to ONLINE FRIENDS for hours while rolling polyhedral dice... or worse, *pretending* to roll polyhedral dice with previous simulator.

I mean, you can't top that unless you are also in costume or something.

I think online D&D is less nerdy, unless you're doing it live, then it's probably a draw. If you're doing it thru e-mail or a forum or something, then it's on your own terms, so therefore less geeky. But you could even things out by putting on the wizard hat.
