That study suggests that the "proper" decision would have been to wait for the larger sum of money and that those students who opted for less money given sooner made an obviously poor choice ; that's fallacious.

Depending on the interest rate they can get and when they actually get the larger sum (one week to 8 months is a pretty large range), the $15-$35 may have a higher present discounted value than the $50-$75. [Razz]

[edit] Props to 10k for bringing up the argument.

Worst case scenario is an 8 month wait, 35 now and a 50 later. That's still a crazy interest rate(64%, compounded annually. I'm too lazy for a monthly compounding, but it won't make a material difference).

There isn't any NPV argument to make here.

edit - however, depending on whether or not they did any control testing and what those results were, it may still be a stupid study.

It shouldn't take a whole lot of leftover blood in one's brain to realize that you could spend MORE on a girl LATER if you WAIT and not choose to blow it all at once on dice.

*read this in the university rag just this evening, actually*

Is it a test of "do guys make stupid choices for hot chicks?" or a test of "do guys want some money now or some more later?"

Are they sure people always choose the latter money all things equal? Because as economists always hate, since they are boring predictable people, most people are not boring and predictable and make stupid choices since they don't whip out a calculator and go "THAT WAY I CAN GET $0.03 MORE! THAT WILL MEAN MY PENIS.. I MEAN BANK ACCOUNT.. WILL BE LARGER THAN YOURS IN 9 MONTHS TIME!!!!111"

Look, the point wasn't that guys wanted the money now- the point was that they only wanted the money now IF THEY SAW THE GIRL.

10k's arguement is therefore nullified, except as it applies to the "guys r dum" angle presented by the article. It's popular in the media (especially foreign media) to attack men's intelligence when it comes to women- it's as if there's only one target left (because you can't be viscious to many other groups- people are smart enough to be offended), and so they hammer it from time to time.

The valid point is that seeing the pretty girl CHANGES the decision fundamentally- and that really is interesting. The "use the money to seduce the girl" arguement strikes me as weak- I don't think we have money in our genes. They should have also tried it with food and other objects.

A more likely reason- the guys become sexually excited by the looks of the girl (a known fact), and then their brains are just plain old working differently than the guys that didn't go through that process, or the women. Perhaps they want the girl, or are distracted, or perhaps seeing the girl made them think about their own lives, or any of a thousand other things.

There is no evidence that points to that conclusion.

To make the study more complete, they should have shown people things besides pretty people- for instance, ask hungry people about the money, showing the experimental group food. That would make it a study about desire, not sex. Or they could use a different stimuli, one that is statistically signifigant sexually on females (who do not primarily select mates for looks), though no, that isn't as easy.

It's an interesting study, but they should have done more.

Also, I'm sure the money offered in the future was easily enough to compensate for the wait- otherwise it wouldn't be a good study.

...

Just thinking, it's also possible that the guys saw the girls, started thinking about girls, and that occupied their brains as their "primary problem"- so that when they were asked "take dollars now or come back in a week", their thoughts were "I already have a primary problem, I want to simplify others- so I'll SOLVE this problem now and not have to deal with the hassle of returning in a week"... whereas the other guys, their primary problem was the money.

Anyway, interesting. It certainly backs up what we see in life, after all.

I could've saved them a lot of money and just told them that. It's why I can't speak when I try to talk to my friend Eri.

Notice how there's a picture of some hot girl right there with the story, White Cat? So, guys reading the story would not be paying attention to other things, like the cereal they're eating while reading the paper?
