Played it, beat it. It's halfway between SMRPG and Paper Mario. Minigames are decent, but should be moved to the Fungitown arcade more. Equipment is simple but functional. No special weapons, but there are some super moves to find and learn (and they're actually fun to perform. Fire Bros. Advance = Giant Flaming Volleyball of DOOM!), and some unique items (make sure you have the Game Boy Horror SP before the final dungeon!) The armor and badges often have special effects (including making you heavier or lighter, which is more important than you might think). Enemies are unremarkable for the most part, although some are fun and amusing (the viruses from Dr. Mario!), some are stupid (evil Erlenmeyer flasks? WTF?), and some are just old (Goombas, Koopas, Spinys, and Lakitus, except they're all plants now). Oh, and the battle system is too beautiful for words.

Eh, it took me a little over a week to complete it, which was as long as it took me to finish Paper Mario, which I loved.
I love Superstar Saga even more, though... the writing is pretty good as well as hilarious at times, and Mario and Luigi are more realized as characters here than in any of their previous games. Also, the game has Fawful, and that alone rules.
K, you should definitely give it a shot. You liked Paper Mario, so you should find this one to be pretty good as well.

So...is the consensus that it's a larger or smaller world than Paper Mario? There were a lot of side quests in PM, remember, like doing all those chores for that old dude, delivering the mail, coming up with recipes, etc.
Does it have good stuff like that? Anything as funny as Goombario complaining about the smell in the sewers?
Too bad this is a Game Boy game. I'd like to play it on the teevee, sitting on my couch. That just feels right. I ass/u/me if I buy a Game Boy, Game Cube, and some kinda connector I can do this, but that'd have to be one helluva game for me to do that. [ 12-19-2003, 08:01 PM: Message edited by: Mr. K ]

Buy a Game Cube and a Player thingy. No GBA required.
And if I'm actually wrong about this, in a couple seconds some bigger nintendofanboy will correct me.

I checked my Paper Mario cart just now and had 40+ hours of game time, as opposed to the 25+ hours it took to beat M&L. But, I did (almost) everything in Paper Mario after beating Bowser, whereas I still hadn't done everything extra in Mario & Luigi, but honestly, I don't think there's as much of it in the new game. You can track down beans to make bean drinks at Starbeans Cafe (for which you get rewards for each new one, but there's only 7 possibilities), and there's a shirt-making sequence. And there's someone who'll want you to find an ornament. But nothing too repeated. Like I said, though, it took me about a week to beat both games, and I enjoyed them every bit.
As far as something as funny as Goombario, much of the most memorable humor stems from the lack of familiarity people have with Luigi (and Luigi's reactions. In fact, the whole reason Luigi is even in this game adventuring with Mario is funny...), as well as Fawful's "A winner is you!"-inspired dialogue. That's not to say that's the only funny stuff... the game got more chuckles from me throuhout the game than Paper Mario. In a way, it plays out a lot like a cartoon, and you'll want to keep playing to see what happens next (there are more than a few surprises).
You probably didn't like the original Mario Bros. arcade game, so it's probably not worth mentioning that the game includes an updated version of it as well. If you did, though...well, that's something else to do.

A GameCube will run you 99 dollars, and a Game Boy Player, which connects to the base of it, will cost you 50 dollars, neither of which is a bad purchase. M&L's configured to be able to rumble GCN controllers if played on the Game Boy Player, and there actually one *little* sidequest that takes advantage of it. Plus, then you can play Animal Crossing. Thanks for the detailed review.
That all sounds pretty good, altho I really don't like Mario or Luigi, a game that makes fun of Luigi sounds OK.
As I seriously considered buying a Cube for the first time, the only other game I could think of that even seemed the slightest bit interesting was Animal Crossing. I remember when it came out, there was a big surge of discussion about for about a week, and then everyone seemed to suddenly lose interest at the same time.
Is it something those of you who bought it a long time ago are still into, or was it something that was fun for a real short time and now you're bored with it?
I suppose most games are only interesting for a pretty short time, tho, so maybe my questions aren't fair.
At least if I get this Paper Mario thing, I can give it to my friend who has an Advance when I'm done with it.
What's the used market for the Cube stuff like? I didn't mind buying something like Ogre Battle 64 (although I should have) for the N64 because it's a cart and it'll work or it won't. But with these fragile discs that can get scratched, has that been a problem? Or are people not selling their Cube games yet?

The Gamecube Discs are VERY durable... And if they do scratch and won't work, Nintendo will replace them with a brand new one for a fee...
Discs are great, You don't have to insert them just right, blow in them, etc... I prefer discs to cartridges since I feel they're made to last longer, plus they hold a little over a gig of data...

Yeah, they're pretty damn good. I keep my 'Cube at uni so we can mess around on it while skipping lectures, and people treat the setup like shit.
Cat-Gonk can attest to the smear of fingerprints on the back of my Smash Bros. disc, and the tiny cracks in the inner plastic ring, but it still keeps on going like a champ.

Storage media that has to go round and round is for primitive ape men. Solid state is where it's at. I can't believe it's taken so long to get stuff like digital cameras.
That said, I dropped a couple hundred bucks to play this Mario thing and so far it's pretty good. I LOL'd the first time it did the Rumble thing, because I've never played games with the Rumble and I didn't know the Nintendo controls had that krap built in.
Also Fawful is not at all a bad thing.
"Now is when I ram you." made me laugh too. Overall, a nice Paper Mario feel. I also got some stupid game with some fag elf in green tights, but I ain't playin' that shit.

For some reason I started playing Animal Crossing again. I found some nifty passwords and I ended up paying off my house and everything. I'm trying to fill up the museum now but I still need a lot of fish and bugs. I just need two fossils and I can get all the paintings with my nifty passwords.

I'm still playing thru M&L...not as good as Paper Mario, but it doesn't suck. I'm glad I got the Player thing to play it on my teevee, because my friend has a GBA and playing it on that little screen kinda sucked for me.
I also got the Midway Museum thing for the Cube for Xmas, which means I can play Smash TV...and finally there's a controller with 2 joysticks, so you can play it right. Well, to play right right, you need to be in an arcade with 2 real joysticks that you can beat the krap out of, but this is pretty close to right.
It sucks now, though, because I can't save my high scores. I even took the shrink wrap off my free Fag Elf game, because I figured you can't save Link's progress without some kinda memory thing, and there was a picture of the memory thing on the case. But none inside.
I saw that Animal Crossing comes with one, though...does it have enough extra room to save Smash TV scores?
Also I need another controller because one-player Smash TV sucks.
That's how they get ya.
By the way, the Midway thing has little video clips of the geeks responsible for the games, and other little facts, kinda like a good movie DVD. That's pretty cool stuff.
Hopefully there will be more of that kinda thing in the future.

Hy to you too.
Anyway, cockflakkin told me the memory thing in Animal Planet doesn't work for Smash TV, so I bought a card. And another controller so the negro can play. Yay, capitalism.
The assholes at GameStop are such condescending geek fucks that I refuse to get the Animal thing there. I actually had the game in my hand, but they were such total dicks to some dad that was asking a simple question about what sorta X-Box stuff to get for his kid that I just went back and put it on the shelf. I'll just order it online when I'm ready for it and send a letter to GameStop HQ while I'm at it.
Anyway, once I finish M&L I'll probably be ready to start trading krap in Animal House.

I got the seX-box version (for myself) -- gauntlet is fun and Road Blasters simply owns. And klax is pretty cool. And turns out defender is Sa-weet. Is Galaga available for X-box??

10,000K: gauntlet is fun
We noticed that Gauntlet kinda sucks when you have infinite lives. It's just endless, skill-less slaughter. I always thought it was fun in the arcade, because at least then you're trying to be the last one to die.
And there's too much channelling everyone into one-square-wide passages for long periods of time.
I was excited to see Gauntlet on the list, but we were totally bored just a few minutes into it. That was disappointing.

You can save high scores on the Cube, you just need the memory thingy.

Look for Namco Museum... if you can find a copy, it'll just set you back for 20 dollars. I got it for my GameCube... it's ok, though I would have preferred Mappy, Super Pac-Man, Rolling Thunder, or anything else to Pac-Mania and Pac-Attack.
It also contains Pac-Man, Pac-Man Arrangement, Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga Arrangement, Dig-Dug, Dig-Dug Arrangement, Galaxian, Pole Position, and Pole Position II... [ 01-08-2004, 08:04 PM: Message edited by: PikachuThunder ]

In the mid-nineties, Namco released aracde cabinets that included original versions of three titles as well as special new "Arrangement" versions with updated graphics, 2-player simultaneous play, and other new elements. Galaga Arrangement features funky rotating backgrounds during challenging stages, three different types of Boss Galagas that will give you a different power-up when you free a captured ship from them (no Double-ship, just power-ups), free a captured ship at any time (not just when they're flying down in formation), and a final boss... and the ability to buy-in continues.
