The best part of this thread is that it brought these comments into the world:
quote:
CRUNCH, MOTHERFUCKERS.

K K K R R A A A A A C C K A A -- C R U U UUNCH.

THAT IS THE SOUND OF YOUR HOLLOW SKULLS FRAGMENTING UNDER THE IMPACT OF GRUCO'S SENTENCE. THIS SENTENCE IS THE ARGUMENTATIVE EQUIVALENT OF THE UBERMENSCH LEAPING 40 DIMENSIONS UP INTO THE AIR AND DELIVERING AN AXE KICK TO YOUR HEAD WHILE ALLAH PLAYS SPEED METAL USING THE GALAXY AS A GUITAR PICK.

STOP TALKING NOW.

Well sure, I hardly distinguish between the two anyway.

They must not do so in uniform, and they must make clear that they do not speak on behalf of their military unit

I agreed on the first page that Boykin could get in trouble if there was a military policy against wearing his uniform in that situation.

And no, these soldiers should not be demoted, fired, or otherwise punished for speaking out against the war.

Oh, and a postscript on what ended up happening:

Boykin then requested an investigation by the inspector general into the allegations. [25] A ten month investigation carried out by the Defense Department later concluded in August 2004 that Boykin had broken at least three rules in giving the speeches: not clarifying that he gave the remarks in a private capacity; he hadn't received clearance for making the remarks; and that he hadn't declared the reimbursement of travel funds by one of the religious groups hosting the speaking events. However, the report made no comment on the actual remarks made, and little action was taken against Boykin. [26] The report defended the decision not to comment on Boykin's actual comments for several reasons, primarily because "freedom of expression considerations under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution apply in this case." [27]

So Boykin got in trouble for some elements of the way he went about making the statements, not the statements themselves. My main beef in this thread was that people seemed to be saying that Boykin should be punished even if what he said didn't actually violate any pre-existing rules.
