Now that the new Spider-Man 'toon has been shown for a few weeks, I'm interested in what you all think about it. For those who do not know, there is a new Spider-Man series that airs on MTV. It is directed by Johnny Darrell, Sean Frewer ("Max Steel"), and Ezekiel Norton ("Beast Wars," "ReBoot").

This new series is ok, IMO. So far, the stories are pretty well done. One thing that slightly irritated me is the art. Being an animation fan, I have yet to see a series where the computer graphics are used well, without the sense of "fakeness" so many of us have seen (yeah, you know what I am talking about). In Spider-Man, there are occasional scenes where things look "rushed," as I noticed that there were many jagged edges on items that should appear round. Also, the character designs and movements may at times seem a rather unrealistic, but watching Spider-Man swing through the city is superb. Does it match the Spider-Man series that aired in the mid 90s? I dunno...

Opinions of this new series?

The Fox kids version of Spider-Man is one of my favorite cartoons of all time, and I still watch it on ABC family when I can. This new one really doesn't compare. The animation/art work leaves a lot to be desired and the villains haven't been very interesting.

I only saw one episode, the one with the old lady with the magical sword. She was awesome. I enjoyed the show; I ran into it randomly before I ever heard anything about it. I can't rate the writing having only seen one episode, but I liked the one I saw. The voice acting really sucked at times (MJ), the dialogue was real cheesy (EDIT: more than) once in a while, but I liked the animation. It's like cel-style CG. The way Spidey moves is very well done, I think. The things that should be slow and dramatic are the right speed, as are the quick pieces (that show agility, for example). The cinematography isn't bad either.
I liked it, too bad I'm not home at 10pm Fridays or whatever it is.

Was it good? Yes.

Was it better than the previous versions? No.

In most cases, the original is always better.

That old Spider-Man was awesome, they really did a good job capturing the feel of the Spider-Man books, with all his problems and the constant one-liners while he fought.

Can't believe they ended that series with all that weird clone stuff and destroying the world.

CG cartoon graphics always suck. Any kind of movement looks so weird and unnatural. They should use the classic villains instead of all these newfangled dudes.

I saw a block of it a couple weeks ago. I liked the character designs and the cel-shading is pretty decent. But the animation is utterly horrible! It's so unnatural, stiff, and the way they express emotions is just so robotic. Hearing that it's produced by those ReBoot people explains so much. You'd think with all these PIXAR movies out, the CG animators would follow their example and get a clue on how to produce realistic, more fluid movement. Even SQUARE knew to at least use some motion capturing for The Spirit Within. There are lots of parts in this new CG Spider-Man that remind me of that old blocky Dire Straits video for "Money For Nothin'". At least in the video, it's forgiveable since it's ancient mid-80s technology. But today? Utter crap.

Other than the shitty animation, I think their writing needs work. It's got all the boring angst of a WB teen drama. I saw this one episode where this dude was trying to fit in to this one group and they invite him to a party, only to humiliate him in a lame initiation stunt. Then he runs out crying and gets shocked by a billboard and suddenly gets mutant electric powers. Terribly predictable. But then, this is produced for MTV, so what do you expect? This is all your average captive MTV audience is able to comprehend anyway.

Heck no, nothing will ever compare to the 63 episode goodness that was Spiderman: The Animated Series on Fox kids. I'm a Spidey freak in that regard, I still remember most episode titles. Nothing can ever beat the storytelling in that show except the original comic. The show had great voice acting, Mark Hamill was the Hobgoblin, Jennifer Hale(Alex Roivas voice in ED) was Felicia Hardy...Eh, and the animation, and even crossover eps even turned out good, when most crossover eps in series dont.

One thing that bugs me about that show…. Why did they change the Green Goblin/Gwen Stacy/Hobgoblin storyline? The Hobgoblin shows up before the Green Goblin!

The best voice was the Kingpin, whoever did that was like perfect for the role.

And Smythe, he was pro-bono.

The animation mostly sucks, but I love the way Spider-Man moves. I think they did a really good job on that.

The dialog is lame and the stories suck, in that they could be a lot better with just some very minor tweaks, but they obviously don't have a Smart Person checking over the scripts.

They're watchable, but there's too much focus on Peter's chick problems, which are a little silly anyway. (Shy, nice guy dork has numerous chicks fighting over him. Yeah, right. It's easier to believe that he has spider powers.)

I ass/u/me they're trying to do a Buffy thing with the plots like that, but the dialog would need to be better to pull that off. Well, unless Buffy sucks too. I dunno, I've never watched.

Anyway, it's not revolting poop (like Teen Titans), but it could have been a lot better.

Buffy was awesome until the chick writer got too much control and half a season would be nothing but angst.

As you have all mentioned, the Spider-Man 'toon from the mid-90s was outstanding. However, I'm gonna say that the younger generation who have never seen that version of Spider-Man would say that this one is very well done. The reason we all have weighted opinions is because we've seen the 90s version. But to a person who is new to the world of Spider-Man, this new series wouldn't be that bad. I mean, other than the occasional corny lines and the stiff graphics, it is actually satisfactory. IMO, Spidey looks a lot better swinging around New York in this series than in the 90s one, where the 3D stuff still seem pretty new (other than for ReBoot).

EDIT: Barrierd, look here. (Or here.) Click on "From Sketch to Screen" for some pics. My favorite thing on that site is the description for J. Jonah Jameson: "Looking like a cross between Hitler and Vanilla Ice , Jameson is Peter Parker's editor at the Bugle."
