IN THE BEGINNING
About four or five years ago my aunt, being in a generous mood, decided to take me out to Toys R Us. She had recently flown in from England and had missed my birthday. Instead of asking me what I wanted (which was Super Smash Brothers), she felt it would be easier to take me with her and pick out what I wanted myself. I agreed, and we went on our way, listening to her tape of Monster Rock Anthems.
I made my way to the video game aisle. As I walked down the GameBoy aisle, my eye caught the Pokemon sheets. Instead of having the games physically there, like they do now, the games were all behind a counter, and each game had a laminated sheet, which was basically the same as the front and the back of the actual game box. Under these sheets were sheets of paper you would present to the cashier to get the game. You probably know what I’m talking about. Anyway. I saw the Pokemon sheets and I thought to myself, “James and Zack have Pokemon Red, maybe I should get Blue.” Then I thought to myself “I don’t have a GameBoy, thus I could not play it even if I had purchased it.” Then, I thought to myself “Wait, with my aunt being so generous, I might be able to acquire both Pokemon Blue and a GameBoy!” I proceeded to ask my aunt if I could do this. She said it would be fine with her.
But my mind was still not yet officially made up. I wanted Smash Brothers, I had come here for Smash Brothers, but I could get a game and a system, and that costs a lot more. I ended up basing my decision on the cost of the gift. I went with Pokemon Blue and an Atomic Purple GameBoy Color.
I played Pokemon sporadically, I beat the Elite Four with a team of pokemon that were embarrassing. A Blastoise with Skull Bash, a Sandslash with Cut, I had no idea what I was doing. I put the GameBoy away and went on to other games.
During this time, I lurked on a newsgroup called rec.sport.pro-wrestling. At that time, it was one of the best troll dens around. Shortly after I began reading RSPW, a flame war erupted with alt.games.nintendo.pokemon. I think it had something to do with Marcus Yu, I don’t really remember. I checked out AGNP to see how the trolling was going, and saw that there was some information there on how to play Pokemon. I lurked for a short time on AGNP and found no real information, most posts were either fanfics or the words “Meeh Caheeh” over and over again. While checking out one of the “Meeh Caheeh” posts, I saw in somebody’s sig (Cat-Gonk’s most likely) a link to “Azure Heights Pokemon Laboratory.” This was the original Geocities page. I checked it out, and found out that there was an actual strategy to this game. TMs were not to be thrown willy-nilly on any member of your team. Not every pokemon is worth training. Cut was a bad move! I read Cat-Gonk’s moveset suggestions, which only went up to Electrode, and made a team based on them. I don’t remember what else was on the original site, maybe stuff about deter values that was way over my head. I also remember trying to read through The Big Sig, but I didn’t get any of the inside jokes and it just made my head hurt.
I read through most of the stuff at Original Azure Heights. One day, Azure Heights informed me that it had moved.
THE EARLY DAYS
I don’t know when the current Azure Heights came into being. I’m guessing sometime around January 2000. I read through whatever information was up at the time, and checked the “What’s New?” section daily. I lurked in the forums, and I read every post in every forum.
I decided to stop lurking in April 2000. The rest of this story will mostly deal with the forum. I don’t have the best memory so I’ll probably leave out a few important things.
I honestly don’t remember what was going on in the first few months, except that research was going on like mad. Everybody was putting Double Team on all their pokemon. Electrode was the favorite starting pokemon. The Chansifier still worked (OK, maybe it never worked). The Magician Bro was the favorite Slowbro moveset. It was a fun time for all. I picked up Pokemon Yellow around this time and planned on making a kickass team.
There was a lull in research and Miscellaneous Krap’s (was it called Karp Park from the beginning?) use went up. I think this is around the time Post Counts were taken away. This is probably around May – June. The chat started up around June as well, if I’m not mistaken.
THE CHAT
When the chat started up, there were no ops and it basically went to Hell in a few hours. Darryn banned everyone, then Netbrian took over and banned anyone he didn’t like. Order was eventually restored and Mr. K made Golem Kong an op. Shortly afterwards Mr. K made ZZTRaider, Rikka, and myself ops. It was an interesting experience. I kicked out everyone, Rikka and GK did what they were supposed to do, and ZZTRaider kept letting Darryn in. Eventually ZZTRaider and I had an argument over our artistic differences that ended up with ZZTRaider resigning. It was down to me, Rikka, and GK. GK continued his normal opping while I continued kicking out everyone while Rikka started idling more and more.
Rikka eventually stopped coming into the chat entirely, and Mr. K decided to add a couple of new ops. He picked Atma and Givera. Atma was a good choice. He was in the chat a lot and he knew what he was doing. Givera ended up being a bad choice. I don’t remember exactly what he did that annoyed me, but it was probably that he undid any akicks and bannings I made. He also gave people ops (one of them, Yay Porygon, would remain a regular op). Also, he was Givera. Givera’s time as an op was short, and ended when he went insane and told GK to delop him. After a very strange few minutes, Givera’s op level was lowered enough to allow me to delop and akick him. He showed up again a few days later. He had his akick removed, and had gone back to normal. The ops were now GK, Atma, Pory, and myself.
The chat went on strong for the next couple of months. There was a lot of discussion, nonsense, idiot newbies, and kicking galore. Then, the chat just started to fade away. Regulars stopped coming in. More and more newbies kept appearing. I started to idle more and more, and would not be in the chat for days at a time. After a three day absence from #azureheights, I went in and noticed that EeveeTrainer was an op, and so were a bunch of other people I didn’t know. I demanded to know what was going on and ET tried to tell me something but he wasn’t making any sense. I emailed Mr. K and told him #azureheights had been taken over. His reply just made me feel worse. It said that ET had gained control of the chat two days ago. Oops. I made my way over to #azureheightschat. The chat dragged on for a few more months, and then died.
I’m sad that the chat died. There are people from the chat that I haven’t talked to since. Being an op in #azureheights and #azureheightschat was, for the most part, fun, and a very interesting experience that I’ll remember for a long time. While I now frequent #pokebattle and I run #what on Mediadriven, they both lack whatever it was the original #azureheights had.
KARP
When research was at it’s lowest level, people began to worry whether or not Azure Heights would remain useful and whether or not the forums would die. A few people said that once Gold and Silver were released, there would be a rebirth in research and the forums would spring back. Well, once Gold and Silver were released, there was indeed a rise in research, but Azure Heights itself refused to research the Metallics, and it was hard for me to keep interested. I went to Karp Park, never to be seen in the other forums again.
I am, apparently, liked by at least a few Azurians. This puzzles and amuses me, as I can’t bring to mind anything I’ve done that was likable. Mostly, I post pictures and short sentences. I used to have big flamewars with people that would go on and on and looking back on them it makes me embarrassed that I cared enough to flame people like that. I realized that arguing over the internet is pointless and in the end no one’s opinion has changed and nobody else cares and one day you will die and nobody will remember your flamewar with Brayze.
So why waste the effort?
When I started writing this back in February of 2002, I was originally going to end it with a lengthy paragraph that’s starting sentence was “I love this place.” But then there was that whole thing with me and my friends all getting banned and for a while I couldn’t care less if these forums died. But after a few months of cooling down I realized that yes, this place was still important to me. I’ve met so many people here that have become my friends. It’s the only online community where I heavily participated. When I came here more than two years ago I never thought I’d end up quoted in Cat-Gonk’s sig. I never thought I’d thrive here. But unfortunately nothing is perfect. I’ve seen more people that could have been considered friends drop off the face of the Internet. People that were here from the beginning and who were responsible for making the forums great got bored and left. As dorky as this makes me look, I would trade all of my real-life friends in for the “e-friends” and “e-enemies” I’ve made here. So yeah, I guess I do love this place after all.
This isn't a goodbye post or anything, just something I've been meaning to post for a while. I don’t really plan on leaving here until everyone else does. I don’t care about the no-flaming rule, since the only person I still flame is Mick_Hale and I can do that at Uber at my leisure. Since there probably never will be an adults-only version of Karp Park at Azure Heights, if you ever feel like posting something that will get you banned here, just post it over at Uber. There’s an unmoderated forum and you can post silly crap to your heart’s content. Everyone here (even MK) is welcome to come and I promise you will not be banned (unless you try to stab me or destroy the forum).
I’d like to dedicate this 2000th post to Mr. K for not deleting the forums and for putting up with my crap for so long.

Yeah, it's funny how a website can change your life. I'm so glad that I decided to talk to a random stranger (10k Snorlax) at the pokemon mall tour in '00. Otherwise I would have missed out on a lot.
I used to check this forum out like twice a day at least, but as the pokemon players got thinner out here, I lost interest. I miss irl battles.

LP's not an op anymore, and ironically enough, it was TTS who nuked him.
He still floats around making his usual asinine comments now and then, but hey, he doesn't have ban power anymore. And that's all that counts.

That was fucking beautiful. I might try my own, but it could never be as epic as that.
I must confess, despite what the shittiness level of my posts would suggest, I am deeply attached to this place. The only way I will ever leave in the foreseeable future is if either I or the forum software die.
Christ, it made me feel happy just to know that somebody else remembers stuff like Rikka's endless idling, the Magician Bro (lol was that kid ever gay) and flamewars involving Brayze. I'd like to contribute some of my own favourite random memories of threads:
- Vaporeon Babble
- That stupid Truth or Dare thread
- That stupid 'HAHA' thread
- Jumpman starts posting, best newbie ever
- Pornbot when he was still funny
- Darryn winning the UK Championship that I was never even entered into
- ALL THE FUCKING WAR STORIES
- The first ever Interboard Tournament, which as far as I can recall just ended up collapsing
- ET winning the first ever successful IBT, much to most people's disgust
- mr k mouth's old posts, in all their highly amusing retardedness
- Mewtwo's Cheapness Refuckingvisited
- The 'Eruza Depths' debacle
- Givera, Rolken and Pory having wild three-way orgies (I may have imagined this)
- Cat-Gonk being Undisputed Postcount King
Jesus, it's all come flooding back

Like Psybro and Anthrax, I too want to say just how much I really love this forum.
Everybody has that one site on the net that's THEIR site. An almost second home. A place where you know everyone and have a history. A site where someone can mention the things that have happened in the history of that site and say "I remember that", and "I was there when that happened".
This site, to me, is like the bar in Cheers. It's not very important, but it's important to me. Yes, I could choose to use another site, but the people here are what make it special. They provide the life and soul of this board. They make it special. I too would honestly trade the majority of my friend IRL for almost any one of you.
I was never very good with speeches, so I'll just sum it all up with a few final notes:
I will never forget my experiences on this board, nor the people I've met. You guys and this forum will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope that one day I will be able to meet most of you all IRL, even the ones who hate/dislike me (we know who you are). I would not leave Azure if I were paid. I would not give up my memories for anything in the world. I will continue posting at his board, until I am stopped by death, the board is taken down, or I somehow cause Mr. K to permban me.
To sum it all up: I love you guys.

It took me months before I discovered Cat-Gonk had a sig. Months.
I don't know why I bother to come here as well. At first, it was all about learning about the game in the Compendium. I read most, if not all the info on there. I would look up for any updates on the site, then quickly proceed to Oddish memorial Lecture hall (or whatever the old RBY hangout was. Memory is pretty bad) to view and rate the teams of others. Then, if I had any time, I would make myself comfortable in karp park.
I can never perfectly recall my first RBY team. I can vividly remember Psybeam/Reflect/sleep powder Butterfree, Withdraw/Skull Bash Blastoise, a vileplume, and a pidgeot somewhere. This was a mix between the ROM and the gameboy. How I miss those days of discovery...
But now, this place is not a place of learning and rating. It's people with suicide in their minds, that have nothing better to say then 'I had sex once', or trying to post pictures that will make me lose my will to live. And yet, I still come here. I don't post very often, but I am always here.

I mostly dug Azure because at the time I came over here to see what all the buzz was about, (After Gonk made his grand appearance at GameFAQs) it seemed to be less infested with tards and preteens than GameFAQs. I liked research. I liked the fact that people could say "fuck". I liked the fact that I was actually able to convince people that I don't suck. (At least a few of them. )
I was kinda taken aback with SC's, Sama's, and Jump's bannings, but now that much of that has been undone, it's pretty much back to old Azure. (At least my version of "old Azure", which is only about half of its timeline, AFIK)
I'm still a freakish noob compared to most of you, (At least as far as being part of the oldschool is concerned) but yeah, Azure introduced me to the concept of the internet debate. Hell, I was still online a damn Sega Dreamcast (RIP) when I started regging here.
But yeah, I think Uber takes a lot of the pressure off of Azure as far as flaming is concerned. Makes the place much more livable.

I like Broken. Busted sounds funny, like a car without an engine.

Wow. You posted something that was actually.... touching! Very nice... but now nobody can do this anymore; it'll just look like a rip-off...
It was funny to read that you used to be a PKMN player too. PKMN ruleS.

So you mean to say that if Toys R' Us had the actual games instead of the silly game sheets, then you would have never come here?
Odd.

Wow, look at what you can find in the trash.
...makes me feel almost sad for the time I spent walking around with Pokemon on the brain. I remember figuring out the Snorlax Rest bug as I was dozing off on a plane.
And then later I remember walking around with a rebuttal to the next potential response about whether or not something was logical or Constitutional or cheating or funny or whatever loaded up in my head, ready to go.
Oh well, times change. Spending less time here means more time to spend on my other meaningless interests.
And it was always a little awkward mentioning a conversation we had here to someone in real life.
"You were talking to who...where?"
We had fun though, didn't we?

Just yesterday I read this entire post. I didn't pull it up cuz it didn't suck or need to be deleted. It did make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside though.

Yes, we did. We did.
Good thing this was bumped - I had been thinking for a couple of months now that I probably should tell Azure that this site actually meant something to me, and this seems like a good place to do it. Trying to put it down in words would just be a ripoff of Anthrax's post, so I won't do it. However:
Azure Heights Pokémon Laboratory - you mean a lot to me.

Anthrax: As dorky as this makes me look, I would trade all of my real-life friends in for the “e-friends” and “e-enemies” I’ve made here. So yeah, I guess I do love this place after all.
Seconded. I don't post too much, but I still love this place. [ 06-15-2005, 09:00 PM: Message edited by: ~Steel Arcanine~ ]
