IMO Sublime has really cool lyrics, like in The Date Rape Song. Eminem is a lyrical master. Nas has his way with words. Nirvana and Marilyn manson both have sic lyrics.

Who do you think has nice lyrics?

Throw the crib door wide
Let the people crawl inside
Someone in this town
Is trying to burn their playhouse down
They want to stop the ones who want
A rock to wind a string around
But everybody wants a rock
To wind a piece of string around

They're Pinky and the Brain
Yes Pinky and the Brain
One is a genius
The other's insane
They're laboratory mice
Their genes have been spliced
They're dinky
They're Pinky and the Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain

Before each night is done
Their plan will be unfurled
By the dawning of the sun
They'll take over the world

They're Pinky and the Brain
Yes Pinky and the Brain
Their twilight campaign
Is easy to explain
To prove their mousey worth
They'll overthrow the Earth
They're dinky
They're Pinky and the Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain NARF!

Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner but I just been busy
You said your girlfriend's pregnant now, how far along is she?
Look, I'm really flattered you would call your daughter that
and here's an autograph for your brother,
I wrote it on the Starter cap
I'm sorry I didn't see you at the show, I musta missed you
Don't think I did that shit intentionally just to diss you
etc.

I cannot think of a single time Eminem has rapped the words 'suck it bitch' or 'WHAT THE FUCKS WRONG WITH YOU'.

That bitch can rhyme almost anything. To pretend otherwise is idiocy.

So he can! And he also manages to mix in every cuss word in 5 languages, sex, rape, beating, drugs, AND murder every other line!

Top quality lyrics!

EDIT: And Psybro, using a 'song' in which:

1. Has a chorus which is nothing but a different song.
2. Has no actual singing.

Doesn't help too much. Nor does it support the view that he is 'musical'.

So because you disapprove of his lyrical content you feel prepared to disregard his skill as a lyricist unilaterally? Shit, people buy Avril fucking Lavigne's stuff. I don't think Eminem represents a decline in the world standard of lyrics. Quite the opposite.

Oh, and you also appear to not quite grasp the concept of rap. You don't have to sing lyrics in a musical fashion to make them good.

Eminem knows only one language.

Are you gay? Because gay people are the ones that hate Eminem. They believe he is homophobic, but he is not because he hugged Elton john.

Rap is music.

Date Rape Roxx.

That's when things got out of control.
She didn't want to, he had his way.
She said, "Let's Go"
He said, "No Way!"
Come on babe it's your lucky day.
Shut your mouth, were gonna do it my way.
Come on baby don't be afraid,
if it wasn't for date rape I'd never get laid.

He finished up and he started the car
He turned around and drove back to the bar.
He said."Now baby don't be sad, in my opinion you weren't half-bad."
She picked up a rock.,threw it at the car, hit him in the head ,now his got a big scar.
Come on party people won't you listen to me.
Date Rape Stylee.

The next day she went to her drawer, look up her local attorney at law,
went to the phone and filed the police report and then she took the guy's ass to court.
Well, the day he stood in front of the judge he screamed, " She lies that little slut!"
The judge knew that he was full of shit and he gave him 25 years
And now his hearted is filled with tears.

That night in jail it was getting late.
He was butt-raped by a large inmate, and he screamed.
But the guards paid no attention to his cries.

That's when things got out of control.
The moral of the date rape story, it does not pay to be drunk and horny.
But that's the way it had to be.
They locked him up and threw away the key.
Well, I can't take pity on men of his kind,
even though he now takes it in the behind.

Date Rape Roxx.

You like rape?

I means, if you like songs about it, you obviously endorse the action itself...

So because you disapprove of his lyrical content you feel prepared to disregard his skill as a lyricist unilaterally?

To call it 'mastery', is to say there's nothing better.

Yes, I'd like to think there are better lyrics in better songs that dont involve substances and felonies.

Your welcome to disagree, but that just shows an affiliation with thost felonies and substances...

That is absolutely fucking ridiculous and applying that logic means that every single person who's ever played Goldeneye is capable of murder. Nice try, not this time.

To call it 'mastery', is to say there's nothing better.
Not neccessarily. The term 'mastery' implies extreme proficiency, not neccessarily unparalleled.

Your welcome to disagree, but that just shows an affiliation with thost felonies and substances...
How dare you apply such hopelessly skewed logic. I will have you know that the only crimes I have ever committed have been through Kazaa, and I have not so much as become inebriated in my sixteen years on this planet. The fact that you feel you can make assumptions about my own moral persuasions based on my appreciation of an artist's writings clearly pegs you as in need of a check-up from the neck up.

And just to hammer the final nail in the coffin, learn apostrophes.

Incorrect

Lyrical skill isn't about subject, its about using the subject with songwriting talent. Eminem has great writing talent. Besides, you don't like any non-Japanese music anyway even though you haven't heard most of it, so I don't know why you're even bothering...

What the fuck is up with System of a Down? Are their lyrics truly as apeshit insane, retarded and meaningless as I believe, or are they just too intricate and subtle for me to comprehend?

Serj Tankian said in an interview that he was high when he wrote songs like "jet pilot." Their better lyrics were on their self-titled.

Who could forget...

you let me violate you
you let me desecrate you
you let me penetrate you
you let me complicate you

help me
i broke apart my insides
help me
i've got no soul to sell
help me
the only thing that works for me
help me get away from myself

i wanna fuck you like an animal
i wanna feel you from the inside
i wanna fuck you like an animal
my whole existence is flawed
you get me closer to god

you can have my isolation
you can have the hate that it brings
you can have my absence of faith
you can have my everything
help me
tear down my reason
help me
it's your sex i can smell
help me
you make me perfect
help me become somebody else

i wanna fuck you like an animal
i wanna feel you from the inside
i wanna fuck you like an animal
my whole existence is flawed
you get me closer to god

And that's even without the instruments!

Eminem is one of the few rappers I respect. While most rap is nothing but black boybands, comprised of a generic beat with some nifty little special audio effect in there, repeating their names a bunch of times, and going on about 'pimpin da hos', Eminem's lyrics contain meaning and depth. "Without Me" is just one big cynicism-he doesn't curse alot and sing violent lyrics just to be vulgar or as a gimmick, but as a challenge to censorship. "Stan" is generally agreed to be a great song, and the rest of his songs are also much better written than the average rap song.

This isn't to say that I like him, but I respect him.

And now, if we can get off the whole subject of Eminem...

At home, drawing pictures of mountain tops, with him on top
Lemon yellow sun, arms raised in a V
The dead lay in pools of maroon below

Daddy didn't give attention
To the fact that mommy didn't care
King Jeremy the wicked, oh, ruled his world
Jeremy spoke in class today (2x)

Clearly I remember pickin' on the boy
Seemed a harmless little fuck
But we unleashed a lion
Gnashed his teeth and bit the recess lady's breast
How could I forget?
And he hit me with a surprise left
My jaw left hurtin', ooh, dropped wide open
Just like the day, oh, like the day I heard

Daddy didn't give affection
And the boy was something mommy wouldn't wear
King Jeremy the wicked, ruled his world

Jeremy spoke in class today (3x)
Woo (14x)
Try to forget this...try to forget this...
Try to erase this...try to erase this...
From the blackboard...

Jeremy spoke in class today (2x)
Jeremy spoke in, spoke in (2x)
Jeremy spoke in class today
Woo (29x)
Woooooohhh...spoke in, spoke in
Woooooohhh...uh huh, uh huh...

Since when does the moral content of his lyrics (or your own seal of approval) have any bearing whatsoever on the inherent quality of the lyrics?

Edit: DL said it better than me, but basically, it is his lyrical talent that matters in this case, and talent is independent of opinion.

Hugging a gay person doesn't necessarily mean you're not homophobic. Maybe he just did it so all the little mommies and mommies (<- Ahem)out there wouldn't forbid their kiddies to buy his stuff.

I'm bisexual, and I don't like Eminem. Not because he's a white punk, which he is. More because I'm not gonna listen to anything the artists won't let their KIDS listen to.

How dare you apply such hopelessly skewed logic.

It's not difficult to conclude that morality and musical taste are linked...

Naturally, if you dont have a problem, and enjoy songs about sex, rape, murder, drugs, etc, your less moral than someone who would not like those sort of songs.

It would be difficult to argue otherwise... I suppose you can do so from a theoretical standpoint, but if you look at real people, and their real taste in music, you can see something of the like.

Now that's not skewed logic as much as is observable fact... which I've indeed observed.

Songs aren't about lyrics themselves unless you only listen to music so you can be happy and sing along with it.

Naturally, if you dont have a problem, and enjoy songs about sex, rape, murder, drugs, etc, your less moral than someone who would not like those sort of songs.

...Or maybe I'm just be less easily offended than people who don't appreciate that type of song.

Annie's 12 years old
In two more she'll be a whore,
Nobody ever told her
It's the wrong way.

Don't be afraid with the quickness you get laid
For your family gets paid
It's the wrong way.

I gave her all that I had to give,
But I'm gonna make it hard to live.
Big salty tears running down her chin
And it ruins up her make up
I never wanted

A cigarette,
Pressed between het lips
But I'm staring at her tits,
It's the wrong way.

Strong if I can,
But I am only a man,
So I take her to the can,
It's the wrong way.

The only family that she's ever had
Is her 7 horny brothers
And her drunk-ass dad.
He needed money
So he put her on the street,
Everything was going fine until the day that she met me.

Happy are you sad,
Wanna shoot your dad
I'll do anything I can
The wrong way.

We talked all night and
Tried to make it right,
Believe me shit was tight,
It was the wrong way.

Don't run away if you wanna stay,
Cause I ain't here to make ya', oh no
It's up to you what you really wanna do
Spend some time in America, dub-style

She'll give you all that she got to give,
But I'm gonna make it hard to live.
Big salty tears rolling down to her chin
And it smears up her makeup
I never wanted

So we ran away
And I'm sorry when I say
That straight to this very day
It was the wrong way.
She took a hike,
Don't matter if I like it or not
Because she only wants
The wrong way.

I gave her all that I had to give,
But she still wouln't take it, oh no.
Her two brown eyes only get larger still,
And it still ruins her makeup
I never wanted

With my feet upon the ground I lose myself
between the sounds and open wide to suck it in,
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out,
I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.

His child is too small to understand what he is talking about. Apparently most adult don't either. Morality isn't going to win a talent argument. Smack my bitch up is the greatest video ever made. It is pure video art at its best, but because it is morally wrong, does not mean the director isn’t talented.

Props to Dark_Herakurosu and Bulbasaur3000 for the kick ass lyrics.

Well it's good to know that you'll be okay
I've been waiting for this
And I'll be there to sit
While you pray no one's blaming me
I'm not supposed to wait
When they open up your heart...

I have been good
I understood Like a machine they'll fix you from the start
I'm in repair
The life that we share
I know that I'll be lost in
But we're always in repair

Lock the door, lock the door
And it's good to know that you'll drive away
From this car crash nightmare
And I'll be there to help you again
There's no danger We're just killing time again
When they order up new parts

I have been good
I understood Like a machine they'll fix you from the start
I'm in repair
The life that we share
I know that I'll be lost in
But we're always in repair

Take this time to figure it out
Know the wire, the fuse, the things that you doubt
The wheels, the air, the metal, the mouth
Something, something, something
I have been good
I understood Like a machine they'll fix you from the start
I'm in repair
The life that we share
I know that I'll be lost in
But we're always in repair

Take this time to figure it out

k I'll hop on board the train since I figure most people won't follow my links

Opeth - The Funeral Portrait

You wait by the window
Morning's breath on the sill
Idle hands given another try
So you wait and you savour the moment
Outside the canvas turned white
Ruby eyes in the fog
Rain washing clean all the sins
A liquid gown that covers all
Your loathe turns endless
Opened mirage soothes your sense
Locked on the pinnacle, the best secret within
Like a derelict child, heart burning for a stranger, Ascending to the meek
Flock round the liars in awe
Caked in the soil beneath, fear me when we meet
Turn away in admiration, my firm grip round the nucleus of joy

Enough of this

You will leave me now, you will see it now
Perish at my hands
close to you, tangled up in hair
Fresh stigma look
Shall I take you with me
And it is cold, ruby eyes in the fog
It is me

And you are just like them all
Stained by the names of fathers
I'm greeting my downward fall
Leaving the throes to others

And you are just like them all
Stained by the names of fathers
I'm greeting my downward fall
Leaving the throes to others

From the Hudson River out to the Nile
I run the marathon 'till the very last mile
If you battle me I will revile
People always say my style is wild
You've got gall, you've got guile (GUILE)
To step to me; I'm a rapophile
If you want to battle you're in denial
Coming from Uranus to check my style
Go ahead put my rhymes on trial
Cast you off into exile

When it comes to beats, well, I'm a fiend
I like my sugar with coffee and cream
Got to keep it going keep it going full steam
Too sweet to be sour too nice to be mean
On the tough guy style I'm not too keen
To try to change the world I will plot and scheme

It's not difficult to conclude that morality and musical taste are linked...

I wouldn't find it too difficult to link your views on degeneracy and art with those of Adolf Hitler, but I wouldn't immediately conclude that you were a Nazi.

The music/television/art/whatever somebody enjoys is, in the vast majority of cases, completely independent of their own moral characteristics. Unless, of course, your morals consist of 'NO TALKING ABOUT BAD THINGS MAYBE THAT WAY THEY WILL GO AWAY'. If you don't mind art being based around something, that doesn't mean you inherently approve of that thing. If one artist paints pictures of battle scenes, and another doesn't, does that mean the first advocates war more than the second? Or perhaps they might have a point to make about the futility of war?

I will cite as proof the many, many law-abiding, honest, well-meaning people who listen to Eminem, or Tool, or whoever in the Hell else has lyrics that scare the pants off sheltered conservatives, and don't let if effect their own judgements.

I would like to see any kind of proof, anecdotal or otherwise, of your 'observations', which I cannot simply rip to shreds with more sensible explanations.
____________________________________________________

On topic, my favourite song next to American Pie:

On a dark desert highway
Cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas
Rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy, and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place (background)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
Any time of year (background)
You can find it here
You can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany twisted
She's got the Mercedes bends
She's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys
That she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard
Sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember
Some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine
He said
We haven't had that spirit here since 1969
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely Place
Such a lovely Place (background)
Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
What a nice surprise (background)
Bring your alibies

Mirrors on the ceiling
Pink champagne on ice
And she said
We are all just prisoners here
Of our own device
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember
I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Relax said the nightman
We are programed to recieve
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave

If you don't mind art being based around something, that doesn't mean you inherently approve of that thing.

But you feel comfortable about it.

If you see a piece of art depicting people in the nude, and one guy comes over and gets an erection to it and walks off smiling, and another guy squints at it and walks off with a strange face, the first guy is horny, the latter more sensible and in control.

It shows what kind of person you are.

I would like to see any kind of proof, anecdotal or otherwise, of your 'observations', which I cannot simply rip to shreds with more sensible explanations.

Well, I'll list some examples.

Before, I'll say, that my view is not that the music you listen to makes what you are, but rather the music you listen to mirrors what you are..

Also, keep in mind that I may not be talking about that specific person, but people in general, as well...

Little Jane here likes the stylings of her favorite TV show songs, like Sesame Street, Telet00bi3z, and the like. She also enjoys Disney movie soundtracks.

So her innocent tastes makes her like happy, light music. I'm not saying the music she listens to makes her innocent, but if you just saw the names of the songs on some list somewhere, you would think "That person must be really young, innocent, and whatnot".

Her moralities are still childish, but she's obviously not openly agressive. Whether she's a brat or not is another story entirely.

Luke here has a problem with people, parents, school, and the like. He doesn't like the authority.

Do you think he would ever take a swing at anyone? I think it's possible. Would he ever do drugs? Maybe.

He'll listen to punk music, and other things like have rebellious themes, because they support him. They make him feel comfortable as a person. Listening to music about drugs and being high is comfortable to him, because he knows of it.

Does he listen to Disney movie songs? No, because he's too rebellious to do so. He'd scoff if the song even played for a second. He obviously doesn't affiliate himself with happy-go-lucky things, and chooses his tastes accordingly...

Reginald here likes soothing Opera and Bach, Vivaldi and the likes, as they can ease his senses as he sips soft wine next his fireplace.

He doesn't care for punk music. He's not rebellious and angry enough to prefer it.

He wouldn't be completely disgusted by the Disney music, although an eyebrow would be raised. There's a chance he could sit through it too, as he could be more open-minded than, say, a person who listens to rap or punk or whatever would be, since rockers, rappers, punk...ers seem to have pride in their affiliation, bad-mouth and flame the others, and are limited in their tastes as such. Classical music enjoying people dont have that.

Lets go further, with some real-life examples.

Ikuse listens to all that anger-involved music that you're talking about, whilst I stay around Japanese music, and random other things.

He was talking about how when he got up to go to the bathroom, Toshi took his computer, and he promptly got into a fist-fight.

If that was me, I wouldn't fight him. I would be annoyed, and would object, but I wouldn't go to there.

The music I listen to doesn't influence that decision, but the lack of violence that my preferred genre of taste contains mirrors my decision. Same way that Ikuse's preferred genre of taste mirrored his.

Kristen like Beatles, Disney songs, and other things like that. Would she ever start a fight?

I'll let you respond to that, and prove myself further if it's necessary.

Char42: You like rape?

I means, if you like songs about it, you obviously endorse the action itself...

So, because the guy likes a song which warns people (particularly adolescent males) that date rape is st00pid and ruins lives, he supports date rape?

You could at least pay attention.

Also, are you still trying to claim that the subject matter affects the intrinsic quality of the work or that someone who deals with controversial content is somehow less talented than someone who only thinks happy thoughts?

Personally, I think Eminem is an asshole, and I don't like most of his music that much (that "I'm sorry mama" song is so whiney that I'm surprised his fans didn't turn on him and beat the krap out of him for being such a pussy), but I can appreciate his lyrical skills. He's not on par with actual literature or anything, but for pop music, his lyrics are definitely above average.

I don't like jazz either, but I can appreciate the quality and technical skill in good jazz. I just don't want to hear it.

Anyway, there's no reason someone couldn't produce a piece of art that's both supremely offensive and amazingly high quality.

I wouldn't say Eminem is a "genius", but it's tough to argue that his music isn't good quality stuff, relative to pop music, and particularly in his genre.

No, read my big post up there.

but I can appreciate his lyrical skills. He's not on par with actual literature or anything, but for pop music, his lyrics are definitely above average.

Even then, that's an opinion. I see his lyrics has 90% cussing and sex/murder/rape/drugs/etc, with 10% message, of which doesn't neccessarily promote 'good times' in itself.

EDIT: It may not have to promote good things, but lemme put this another way. If a poster at a message boards has 90% of his posts as flames, and 10% has an actual response, I would not say he is a good poster. I would not say he has a way with words.

but it's tough to argue that his music isn't good quality stuff

How about the "song" Kim?

Many, many years ago when I was twenty-three,
I was married to a widow, who was pretty as can be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter, who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her and soon they, too, were wed.

This made my dad my son-in-law, and it really changed my life.
Now my daughter was my mother for she was my father's wife.
And to complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy,
I soon became the father of a bouncin' baby boy.

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad,
And so became my uncle, 'though it made me very sad.
For, if he were my uncle, then that also made him brother
To the widow's grown-up daughter, who was, of course, my stepmother.

My father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run.
And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue,
Because although she is my wife, she's my grandmother, too.

If my wife is my grandmother, then I'm her grandchild.
Every time I think of it, HA!, it nearly drives me wild!
For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw.
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa.

OH! I'm my own grandpa.
I'm my own grandpa.
It sounds funny, I know!
But it really is so!
Oh, I'm my own grandpa.

You got the ratio wrong. It’s more like 5% curses to 95% message. Fuckin listen to his music first, and not his media stereotype.

Do you wonder why everyone is against you? Maybe everyone has a point and you don't? Or maybe because most of the things you stated as facts were complete fiction.

But seriously listen to his music, or at least read the lyrics. Look at it from his point of view for one second, then you'll get it.

How about the "song" Kim?

Kim is a message to his ex wife. Can tell he really hates her? Then he got the message across. It isn't mindless cursing. Me telling you to go fuck yourself in a really skilled lyrical way would be talented. While I might not express a morally good message to you, but if I back it up nicely in a talented rape song then one would consider me to be talented.

You think its mindless cursing, but its not. We obviously get the message, you won't look past his public persona. Try to post one of his songs (that isn’t a joke song) that contains mindless cursing.
