Either the people of this board must have missed the movie, or I have missed the thread about it.Anyway... (possible spoilers ahead) I went to the premier this morning (it premiered (sp?) at 00.01 here in Sweden), and all I can say is: Good. It's a good movie, I only looked at my watch once, and that was after I had hesitated for about 20 minutes because I didn't want to take my eyes off the screen. However, if the hype had not been so incredibly big, I would have gone completely nuts. I had already seen most of the coolest scenes on TV (although I tried to resist), and that's not very fun. I haven't read the book, but since I found the movie a bit un-satisfying, I'll read the book when I get the time. The effects: Wonderful. Really. This is the first movie where I had a hard time separating CG from the real thing, though I knew most of it *was* CG. Even the cave troll was well done. There's no Jar-Jar-binks crap in this movie, that's for sure. So, in conclusion: A good movie, but neither better nor worse than the hype. Perhaps I would have felt different if I had read the book first. And oh, I had no problem with following the storyline at all. That's a plus, sometimes movies based on books require that you have read the book before if you ant to get it all.

Yah, I saw it as well during the midnight premiere here in Michigan. Having read most of the book I can say that the movie stayed quite true to the book in most aspects. I say "most of the book" because I didn't finish cause we weren't able to get premiere tickets until only 6 hours before the movie, so I was planning on a much more lenient reading schedule.Nevertheless, I was quite happy to see that a vast majority of the dialouge in the movie was taken verbatim out of the book, one of the most controversial things ever if you know the history of "editing" of LotR. Sure, there were some things that were cut out for time constraints, and I must say that while I miss some of the parts, the more important ones were kept in the movie. I mean damn, we sat down at midnight, and after the movie and previews were over it was 3:15am, so props to the editors and producers for allowing that much content from the book to stay in. Acting: Not great, but it gets the job done. There are moments where certain actors shine for a bit, but nobody delivers an outstanding performance. Luckily, they kept the screen time of the oh-so-beautiful, but oh-so-terrible-acting Liv Tyler down to a minimum. Sets and costumes are incredible in this movie. All too often, fantasy sets and costumes only go half-way and give you a general idea for the attire. In this movie no expense was spared in making every thread look convincingly weathered or grand, and makeup was excellent as well. There's one shot where one of the elven women bends down to kiss someone on the forehead and the sunlight behind shines through her pointy ears, giving exactly that pinkish quality you would expect, and no, you can't tell where the prosthetic and her ear begins. Don't even get me started on the frightening depictions of Orcs and Goblins and all manner of evil creatures. Another stand-out, as Lark already pointed out was the settings, they're the best that I've ever seen. I can't stress enough that everything about this movie was the way that fantasy SHOULD be done. The only gripe I had was some of the CGI backgrounds weren't as seamless as I had hoped, but all were quite passable, and above anything else I've seen (with maybe the exception of FFMovie).
Fans of fantasy, and even the all but the hardest of hardcore will be very very pleased with the movie. Everything was on such a grand scale that I couldn't help but think many times during the movie. "This is our Star Wars."

Heh, I'll see it tomorrow, but...For those impressed with this movie, or slightly UN-impressed, wait for the next two movies, it only gets better. Heh, it'd be hard to do these books as separater movies, if not for the plain fact The Two Towers happens immediately (well, one hour after, for literal people) after The Fellowship of the Rings, which is why it feels incomplete. I have a few questions for those who've seen the movie:
How was the Balrog? Was Lothlorien as cool as it should be? Was Galadriel as cool as she should be? In THIS movie, do they show Sauron? I remember reading online about how they WILL show Sauron, not just an eye...but I doubt it's in this one.I can't wait.

Complete and utter ass kicking, and no mistake. There were a few changes made, as was expected, but none so great as to change the feel of it, if you get my meaning. The two formost changes that worried me were(possibel spoilers) - - - - a: no Tom Bomabadil (Tom Bombadilo), and b: Arwen being were she was not. Nither one dampened the movie much for me, but Bombadil was still missed. One unexpected pleasure was picking out quotes and scenes that were taken directly from the book.Of course, it was not entirely MY vision of Middle-Earth. but that's not what I expected. If I want my Middle-Earth, I read the books. What I expected, and got, was the first part of an epic story told in grand style. BTW, Sauron is shown. And Lothlorien and Galadriel are not as grand and focused on as I thought they should be. [ 12-20-2001: Message edited by: New Guy ]

How was the Balrog? It was awesome, really awesome. They started with just letting you *hear* the Balrog, the floor in the entire cinema trembled (literally) as the party was chased. Then, it broke through a massive stone wall, a black creature with horns (I think...) swept in fire, and a gigantic fire whip... And you do get to see Sauron, in the beginning. Then, it's just an eye. Unfortunately, I don't remember much places and names from the movie (Lothlorien, for example...) so I can't answer you other questions. I need to see this movie again, and spend another three hours of quality time.

I really enjoyed it. I kinda thought it was too short, which is odd considering that it was a 3 hour movie. It almost would have made sense to made two movies per book, considering that's it's already broken up that way to begin with, but only the really dorky hard-core fans would be able to tolerate that. The points about Bombadil and Arwen have already been made, and I think they're important ones. I can understand Bombadil, mostly. He's a weirdo, and the movie obviously needed to cut things. Arwen was just a fucked up and stupid move though. Yeah, let's butcher one of the greatest stories of all time because we want more love scenes. Whatever. The landscapes and scenery were absolutely perfect. Every bit was just how I imagined it, or better. The background music was very fitting as well. The Mines of Moria scene was perfect, whole way though. The sense of tension was just as good as in the book, and Gandalf's fight with the Balrog couldn't have been any more spot-on. The scene with Caradhras was too short. I always thought of it as a more significant part, but whatever, I guess they needed to speed things up. Pippin and Merry were a *bit* too much comic relief for my taste. Hopefully they'll develop the characters more in the next movie in the Entwoods. Aragorn and Boromir looked fucking identical. That pissed me off. Best part of the movie was the ending(the "Breaking of the Fellowship" chapter). Boromir's betrayal and redemption, and Sam's persuit of Frodo were two of the best and most touching scenes I've ever seen in any movie. Overall, it was good. Very good. More true to the original than you normally see for this type of thing. Really brought the book to life in a lot of places. It felt rushed, and there were some bone-headed moves, but I still can't wait for the next two.

More picky stuff:They never address the reforging of Narsil/Anduril. The end, where Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas find Boromir mortally wounder after the Orcs shot him, and when they decide to run to look for Merry and Pippin is in the first chapter of The Two Towers. A VERY picky note, isn't the Balrog supposed to lose it's flame when Gandalf tells him he can't pass and about the Secret Fire? They skipped the Barrow Wights, the Old Forest, AND the Shire Elves. Did anyone else wanna see the look on Sam's face when he saw elves for the first time? Gildor woulda rocked. :( Glorfindel missing, and in his place, Arwen. I'd rather have Glorfindel, for the story to make more sense. The Council was WAY too short. There, Gandalf was supposed to explain how he got out, tho the movie had already done it. Gloin was supposed to tell about how Moria was troubled, and Balin had never returned. They never explained Bill Ferny, or Sam's pony, Bill. It was if he had just...gotten him out of nowhere. Lorien was too short. They should've met a Nazgul on their way to the falls. Legolas was supposed to kill the thing it rides on.I'm picky. :) [Edit]: Yeah, I realize most of these are because of time constraints, but to have done it RIGHT, 6 movies would have been needed, but that's unheard of, and would take too long, so meh. I saw it Sunday and really enjoyed it, but it felt like something was missing though it was probably because of reading great reviews about it and getting my expectations up a little too much.I haven't gotten far enough in the book to be as picky about the movie, but scenes I did notice they left out are the shire elves and talking to the farmer guy. Also, the book tells the story in a more 3rd person limited view (centered mostly around Frodo) but the movie was more 3rd person omniscient. It cut to scenes showing what happened to Gandalf and Saruman's tower, etc. It makes more sense for a movie to do it that way though since flashbacks are more confusing in movies unless done correctly. What was that super orc thing that killed... umm... oh-look-it's-strider-wait-no-it's-just-that-guy-they-casted-that-looks-so-fucking-identical? Is it just a regular orc or is there something special? He mentioned elves become orcs so I thought it might be one of the three elves (since the nine men became ringwraiths I thought it might make sense). Oh, I wish they hadn't chosen two guys that look so similar. I kept getting the two confused. Is that how you're s'posed to pronounce Mythril (or Mithril... I can't remember how to spell it). I always thought the first vowel was like in "mint," not "me." Sam held his breath for a long time when he fell in the water.

It is such a brilliant film. I just feel sorry for the poor idiots who kept on comparing the film to the book. They miss the point that one is a book and the other a movie and they can't be exactly the same. As films go it has been a highlight for the year and has kept very true to the story. I plead with all others who have read the book and are planning to watch the film, please do not expect the film to contain everything the book does, or you will lose out on an experience which no other film has provided this year. P.S. As a Brit, that film was no way a PG.

Holy shit.
I just saw this movie.
Becuase I never read the book, I kept expecting too many Hollywood cliches, which sort of made me watch with negative eyes.
Then I realized a few things:
Elijah's Wood: hehe huhhuh Sam is a Goonie. That elf guy looks like Link. I kept thinking of old Final Fantasy games, mainly after the Mythril reference. ("Mythril is weak compared to Cecil's Crystal Armor" would run thru my mind)
Most likely, this is the next DVD I buy.

Fucking awesome movie. I'm glad I read the book before I saw the movie.
I, for one, am incredibly glad they left out the part of Tom Bombadil. That was easily the most boring part of the book.
Arwen doesn't belong in the movie, regardless of what anyone says. It's another bastardized attempt to fit in a love story where it doesn't belong. On that note, Liv Tyler is even hotter as an elf. But I'd still rather do Galadriel, despite when she goes all nutz over the Ring.
Gandalf may be gay, but his acting was still top notch.
I cheered when Boromir was turned into an Orc arrow pincushion. He was such an asshole in the book and the movie.
The Mines of Moria was the best 45 (estimated) minutes of my movie-going life.

You're getting 'em confused.
The lover chick is Eowyn. Er, wait, that was in the second book. Nevermind. ANYways, arwen was in love with boromir and eowyn was in love with aragorn, correct? It's all so confusing. I'll have tor ead the books again. -_-;

Arwen and Aragorn are in love with each other. I think the reason they're putting Arwen in The Two Towers is so that not everyone thinks Aragorn should've hooked up with Eowyn. In the books, the Arwen/Aragorn thing comes out of fucking nowhere at the end of Return of the King, so I can see why they'd want to avoid that.
