There was a plane, 767 or possibly a 747 that crashed in Sumerset PA, like 5 miles from Pittsburgh. I guess that wasn't supposed to be an attack on Pittsburgh, but a boched hijack that was heading down to NY. Hope that clears anything you didn't know up for you, Jump.

Edit: A few corrections, one, I think they said it was a 757. It's "Somerset", not "Sumerset". And apparantly it wasn't 5 miles from Pittsburgh, though CNN did say that.

If not him (we have no PROOF of who, don't go name calling), who has the resources to pull this out? My gut feeling is that this is in house. Before we start blaming those outside the US, look in the US. This attack was very coordinated, damn well executed... scary.

This attack used coordinated hijacking of 4 commercial airlines and a coordinated strike of 3 of 4 hijacked airlines.

Quesion: How many people does it take to hijack a plane and fly it into your desired targets?

Resources of the attack and method of attack is key. I figure you need at least 4-5 hijackers each plane. Definite suicide run. This attack is just so different from the car bomb method. A murderer usually has a preferred method of killing. Can the previous groups go from car bomb to hijacking 4 (four!) commercial airlines. That's why I think it's in house. Airports are already prejudice as it is; I figure if the perps looked "in house," security would have been lax and overlooked them.

Compare:
Car bomb: 1-4 people, no suicide, drop and run
Hijack 4(four!) plane AND strike: 4-5 at LEAST each plane. One would have to know something about flying planes

Blasting away the people who did this, won't solve anything. This is (probably) the work of some extremist force, not a whole country. Taking innocent lives wouldn't exactly make things better.

Most of the business district (Bay Street, Front Street and King Street) have been evacuated. The CN Tower has been closed for the day. Most government offices have been closed down. In the airport situation, Dorval in Montreal has been closed down as has Ottawa International. Pearson Internatoinal in Toronto is closed to outgoing flights entirely, as are all flights in North America. Most Canadian airports are accepting flights that were supposed to go into the states from Europe and Asia and the like.

CNN has been going nuts. CBS, NBC, and ABC have all been flooded. Even TBS has turned into a news station. CBC, CTV, CityTV in Canada have all diverted all shows to news. Of all stations in Toronto, 92.5 had the most thorough coverage, and they are the worst station in the city IMHO.

Hospital situations are overflowing. Over 50 hospitals in New York are being completey run over with patients. Over 100 hospitals surrounding the city have the same problem. Toronto's Sunnyrook Hospital is now ready and willing to accept patients, as are most hospitals in Toronto. (Sunnybrook is the medical hub of Toronto.) Blood levels are virtually depleted. People need to get out and give blood, right away. If they have any fears about giving blood, now's the time to forget those fears. Emergency services from all surrounding states have sent nearly their entire forces to New York City.

The death and destruction is innumerable. Over 50,000 deaths in New York City alone are estimated, based on the statistics of tourists and people that work in the WTC.

The scene looks like a volcano erupted in the middle of NYC, spewing volcanic ash in all directions. CNN got a video of the second plane that crashed into the second building and the implosion of the buildings.

Communications in and out of the states have been completely crippled. I couldn't get a hold of my cousins in Plainview, a suburb of NYC nor could I get a hold of a friend in Miami Beach, Florida. Federal buldings, tourist attractions, and virtually everything else in Washington have been closed down. Major internet sites, such as MSNBC and CNN were closed down from an incredible amount of pings because of everyone trying to figure out what the hell happened.

During the morning announcements at Thornhill Secondary, our principal told us that something happened in NYC, but none of us expected this. I turned on my radio and started to freak out. I frantically made phone calls to my parents at their work numbers. I felt it was necessary t run home to watch on TV what happened, seeing as to how the radio was not doing me any justice, nor was the net.

All around the world, prayers have been flowing out of institutions, religious or secular. The response time, let alone the emotional response to this disaster has been incredible.

Every major Canadian armed forces base is on high alert, ready to do whatever the US needs.

The TVs are dead. Some people were saying that since most stations were broadcasting from the WTC, their channels would be dead. But later on it is found out that the school has cut the TV.

I go on to find a computer. The Interweb has been shut down for repairs.

Two of my friends show up.

By the end of the day I know that both Towers are gone and that bombs went off in their basements, the Pentagon has no roof, the National Mall has been hit by a plane, and that there are three other planes that have been hijacked and are currently circling over Virginia. And that Pennsylvania has been hit by a plane, but nobody knows if that was intentional or if we shot it down.

I live close enough to NYC that if anthrax was released, I'd probably get infected. Talk about irony.

This isn't as difficult as you might think.

In reality hijacking of a plane takes one person with a gun. Once they've made it on board they just need to wait for the right time (whatever that may be), get up and calmly walk to the cockpit. I don't need to spell out the rest since you won't need the flight crew.

You could put 2 people on the plane just to make sure that there is one back-up. More than that isn't needed since you're not really looking to control the passengers.

As far as getting those people with guns on to the planes, one of the evening news programs showed it wasn't difficult sometime last year. They did a story showing that the service passages for the two major airports that they went to are completely unguarded. They had a person with a concealed camera go through without anyone even looking at them. Once inside, a person would have access to any part of the airport, including going up to the gate to board a plane with all the other passengers without having to pass through a metal detector.

While the planning of the attacks seemed to be good, there was either no intent of coordination or it couldn't be carried out. Evidence of this is with the timing of the attacks on the towers. If it was coordinated, both planes would have hit at the same time. If they both struck within a second of each other, the shockwaves from the crashes would have caused the buildings to collapse much faster than they did. This would have resulted in more deaths, as the occupants of the other tower would have had no warning to evacuate and many of those who were able to evacuate from each tower when it was struck would be caught by the faster collapse.

The resources needed for the hijacking aren't much more extensive than what is needed for a car bombing. The knowledge needed to fly a plane to a destination after it is airborne (flaps, thrust, compass) is less than is needed to construct a car bomb and easier to come by.

As to guesses that these activities were carried out by members of Osama's group, they're not bad guesses. His group was linked to those that bombed the parking garage of the World Trade Center. Also, members of his group were arrested before they could do anything on the turn of the millenium. Finally, the living quarters of those who had been arrested before they could cause any problems on the turn of the millenium did have some information about another possible future attack on the World Trade Center. There was no actual details about this possible future plan reported at the time, so there really was nothing to know at the time about what has just happened.
