Now that the remakes are out, we should have a place to post how we're playing them, like there was for R/S.

Before I started, I planned out how I would beat the game with my preferred PBS team from way back. Unfortunately, the Sandshrew and Staryu series aren't in Fire, so I have to find some replacements.

WhteCat heads for Oak's lab and gets a female Bulbasaur on the first try, then a Town Map from Daisy. (Wasn't Gary's sister called May before? I guess that's been taken. But what will they call Misty's sister?)

I see that moving items around once again inserts them into the new position, rather than swapping the two items. Good.

After beating the evil Paul a couple times, an electric rat is acquired in Viridian Forest. After beating Brock, I head east to get a Spearow. Heading toward Cerulean, I acquire a Helix Fossil, and decide to hold off evolving Bulbasaur until it learns Razor Leaf, and Spearow until it learns Aerial Ace.

After the Cascade Badge, I pick up a few Meowths for their Pickup. I briefly debate whether to skip fighting the Youngster with a Slowpoke, just in case the Mew Trick still works. To Vermillion, where I head east to get a Diglett, which evolves almost immediately. I then go through the process of preparing to faint on the S.S. Anne so I can go see the truck later. I buy a whole bunch of supplies, take only a level 10 Meowth with me, get HM01, lose to a girl... and it only costs me $240??? What a waste of time, and now I have about 50 Pokeballs I don't need.

When I trade for the Mr. Mime, it always comes out male. Is this because the Abra I was trading was male, or is the Mime's gender set before the trade?

After beating Surge ("Give it da Tunderbolt!") it's off through the dark cave (whose name I don't recall). Spearow finally evolves somewhere around here. A quick pass through Lavender take me to Route 8, where I can finally catch my star, Growlithe.

Unfortunately, Growlithe is only at level 17, while everyone else is over level 30. Fortunately, the new Vs Seeker is a big help here. Instant trainer rematches on demand! Oh, and Ivysaur is now Venusaur.

Now it's off to Celadon...

No, it's always male. I traded a female Abra (or should I say Keshii), and it came out male.

Wait, so are there no more female Mr.Mimes or is this just only because of the trade? Because I always thought it was silly to have a female Mr. Mime.

It's just the trade. And it's original name, Barrier'd, doesn't denote gender. Blame NoA for not forseeing this, and using such an unoriginal name(still doesn't beat Lizard[Charmeleon] in unoriginality, though).

Damn it to hell! I wish the PokéCenter would get off their asses and ship me my damn games! I shouldn't have pre-ordered through them! I just had to have that damned calculator and keychain...

It's been torturous walking through electronics stores today, seeing all those shiny new copies of FR/LG sitting in their glass cages...

My Pokémon Center order came yesterday... I think it was originally scheduled to arrive Thursday, but I saw on UPS's website that Tropical Storm Frances may cause some delays (it passed overhead here, but didn't really do anything, not even a drop of rain).

The calculator I got has a piece of plastic film in the bubble over the LCD display. >=(

Well, the thing is, they haven't even given me an e-mail confirmation yet that they even sent my order. I know for sure that they already charged me for it. Plus, I paid for ground shipping so I know it can't be some plane delay due to the hurricanes.

I tried e-mailing them but I got some auto-generated message saying I'll get a response in 48 hours. Well, it's been 72 hours now. This is really annoying.

Well, I tried phoning them and I gotta wait 'til Monday just to talk to their online order people. Plus the woman who answered sounded like a total bitch and was really brusque with her response. Who knew Nurse Joy was such a bitch?

I'm having more fun than I ever thought possible with Gengar's Curse. It might have something to do with the 50 Lemonades I bought, though. "Oh noes, something I can't Shadow Punch to death. GIANT NAIL IN FOREHEAD! *chug*" And then I shoot Confuse Rays until the problem takes care of itself.

I am also pleased to report that Gengar singlehandedly fucked the entire Psychic Gym in the ear. (Not to mention the Fighting 'Gym'.) Surprising what putting an actual usable attack in can do, eh? Shadow Punch is cool.

(Gengar also destroyed the Grass Gym, but that was back when it was a mere Haunter and couldn't really do damage... but the Grass types couldn't hurt it either. GIANT NAIL IN FOREHEAD)

I paid $15 for my Eon Ticket. [Frown] I hope I don't have to do the same with whatever I need to get to the rest of the islands...

Uiru, the E-Reader algorithm has successfully been hacked by some guy. And, if you have a powerful enough printer and the software you can print your own working E-Reader cards...

So hopefully that will help combat elusive E-Reader island unlockers...

Finally got my package yesterday!

Started LeafGreen with Squirtle.

I'm catching Pokémon left and right to increase my Pokédex entries (26 so far). I already traded an Abra for a Mr. Mime and it is now my main Psychic (it learns Magical Leaf?!) Also I've beaten the first three gyms so far and I just finished clearing out the St. Anne. Got Cut and I'm exploring stuff. Got the bike already.

BTW, I noticed there are slightly darker "tufts" of grass that seem out of place. They're very easy to overlook but they're noticeable. Those have berries.

This was definitely worth the wait. It's just kicking ass. Now to see if Emerald makes it stateside.

Got my package with Leaf Green on Saturday (after a mishap involving a misread delivery slip and shitty timing on the delivery company's part...), and got up to Mt. Moon thus far. Beating Brock with a Charmander was probably the most fun I've ever had with a Fire type, including Ninetales fucking the Colosseum Kyogre over with Grudge.

As for Fire Red, I just beat Surge thanks to the Three Headed Mole of Death (Dugtrio). However, it was a lot harder than I thought because his moveset consisted of Dig (crap), Mud-Slap (crap), Sand Tomb (crap), and Sand-Attack (...). I WANTED MAGNITUDE, GODDAMNIT!

And they took the E-Reader support out of Fire Red/Leaf Green. However, Mystery Gift is back - go to a Poke Mart and enter "Link Together With All" on the questionaire. Presumably, this is how we get the tickets with a little help from the Wireless Adapter.

I finally reached Celadon and bitchslapped Erika with my Fearow. I can also Fly everywhere now. Much more fun than riding around everywhere on my bike.

Oh, and getting those stickers in the Celadon Game Corner is fun. I gotta remember to come with a good team so I can redo them.

I also now have 30 Pokédex entries and have the itemfinder. Woo hoo!

Workin' on badge #8. Finally hit the new islands a bit ago. Can't wait to get the Rainbow ticket to go see the other islands. Trying to finish quickly so I can start uploading some PKMN to the Box and transferring them to my Ruby game.

BREEEEEEED-o-RAMA!

Oh, and spent an ungodly amount of time trying to catch a Chansey and Dratini in the Safari Zone. Ungodly! I literally sat there for hours while watching TV trying to catch the damned things. But I finally did.

I'm 15-20 levels below Elite Four v.2. I can push through right up to Agatha's last Gengar and could probably beat that too if I did it right, but I'm pretty sure either Lance or Gary would eat me (my strategy was basically to use Butterfree's 98% accurate Sleep Powder and switch). I should probably find an Ice Beam TM somewhere... and then give it to a Pokémon that isn't my stupid Blastoise which I'm pretty sure has a S. Atk reducing personality and also has Surf, Waterfall and Strength (and Hydro Cannon, which frequently leaves enemies in the red, but still not dead). Now that I think about it, I want a Starmie. Mmm, Starmie.

Lapras joining at L25? Good.

Aerodactyl joining at L5? [Frown] [Frown] [Frown] [Frown] [Frown] ;_;

He's gonna have to mow down two gyms just to match up with the rest of my team, and I don't trust that SD going into the Psychic gym.

The team is Lapras, Arcanine, Jolteon, Wigglytuff, Alakazam, and Aero - Arcanine's out for Moltres when that particular catch is made.

Now, I've got about $150,000. Should I buy Thunderbolt for Jolteon or Shadow Ball for Wiggleh?

Maybe after I run through Elite 4 2: Electric Boogaloo a couple... dozen times. Right now, the TMs take priority. Especially considering I can afford both.

Now, I just rocked the Psychic gym with Aero and I have to ask... did Sabrina really say she practiced her psychic power by tossing salad? BAD GAMEFREAK! *smacks*

Emerald is the third counterpart to Ruby/Sapphire. But reading what's been posted at Serebii.net, it's practically a new game with all the tons of new shit they added.

FR/LG has a new area called the Sevii Islands composed of seven islands. You visit the first three during the regular adventure. When you beat the Elite Four, you get the Rainbow pass and can access the other four islands. These islands allow you to trade with R/S Pokémon and catch a bunch of G/S Pokémon that were previously unavailable outside of Colosseum (with a few exceptions like Lugia). It's been discovered that there are a couple other islands after this that are unavailable without a special e-Card (or in America's case, a special wireless linkup with Nintendo since the e-Card function has been removed).

Oh, and as an update, I've finished beating the Elite Four. Now I'm running around the islands and trying to unlock R/S trading.

Can someone make a list of all the Pokémon you can trade for with NPCs? I think, I've got all of them. I just wanted to see if I got anything extra (like how Farfetch'd came with a Stick) but I didn't, but it sure helped increase my Pokédex entries.

The ones I know of:

Spearow -> Farfetch'd (Vermillion City)
Golduck(Fire)/Slowbro(Leaf) -> Lickitung (Route 18)
Abra -> Mr. Mime (Route 2)
Poliwhirl -> Jynx (Cerulean City)

You can also trade Nidorans and their evolutions for the gender that's rarer in your version, but I forget where those are.

Trade Nidorans on Rt 5 and their evolved forms on Route 11. Gender depends on version.

Trade Raichu for Electrode and Venonat for Tangela on Cinnabar Island.

I also ran into someone that wanted a Ponyta for something but I can't remember for what.

Other than that, I think I have all those now.

I can't remember, wasn't there someone that wanted to trade for a Clefairy or something? Or was that in the old games?

The guy who wants a Clefairy for trade was in Yellow. He asks for it instead of Abra to give you a Mr. Mime.

Also... I don't know if this is the only one, but I found a typo, at least in FireRed. Check out the "How to register items" section of the Teachy TV. >.>

[EDIT: Um... Formatting? o.O]

Ah, that's right. I guess I captured an extra Clefairy for nothing. *shrug*

I didn't see a typo in that segment. Exactly what was messed up?

An update: I just unlocked the Unowns so I've pretty much visited every area. Got my MewTwo. Took about twenty Ultra Balls to get him.

I also took some time to fill up my Pokédex so I could get a hundred entries and start moving some Pokémon from my Box onto my LeafGreen game. I doubled my entries.

Also, I found the hard way that you lose your tameness if you move a Pokémon from one game to another via Box. It's pretty much exactly like trading without all the transfer time and linking. So if you've got a Pokémon with Return, don't move it to another game. You can store it on the box and it won't lose it's tameness, but if you move it from Box to another game, it will become estranged. I learned this as I was moving PKMN to my Green game. Luckily, none of them had Return, but still, it kinda sucks.

Speaking of tameness, what's the best way to increase it quickly (in any game - R/S or FR/LG)? I miss having the groomer from the G/S/C games. I suppose I could use the Lax Incense, but how quickly does that work? Is it measured by steps?

Actually, there still IS a groomer- Daisy, your rival's sister, will occasionally groom a Pokčmon for you, as well as telling you how much your lead Pokčmon likes you. I used her to get my shiny Golbat, Shimmer, to love me enough for an evolution. Mmm, shiny Crobat.

Well, she doesn't do it right away, but it may not be just once a day, since the game doesn't keep track of what time it is.

Oh, and it's the Soothe Bell ye be needin, not the Lax Incense. You can find the Soothe Bell in Pokémon Tower, where Mr. Fuji was standing before he left. Use the Itemfinder on that exact spot.

Similarly, you should use the Itemfinder on the exact spots where the Snorlax were lazing about, and where Giovanni was in Viridian Gym.

My preferred way to increase happiness back in GSC was to have it with me while repeatedly battling the Elite 5. I assume that still works.

Of course, if you're raising a Pokemon for link battling, you'll want to give it vitamins, which will also give it all the happiness it needs.

Or just stick the Soothe Bell on it (use the Itemfinder where Mr. Fuji was standing) and run around for a while.

And for my next trick - a WAR STORY!

Begin battle: Mick vs. Fat Lip!

I used: Aerodactyl, Moltres, Jolteon, Lapras, Alakazam, Wigglytuff
Fat Lip used: Pidgeot, Alakazam, Rhydon, Gyarados, Arcanine, Venusaur

I lead Aerodactyl, he leads Pidgeot. Aero's Rock Slide... is survived at about 1/3 health. Pidgeot Featherdances, then switches out for Rhydon to eat a Rock Slide. Aero's Earthquake is no-sold and Rhydon Rock Slides for the duke.

Fat Lip 6, Mick 5

Enter Lapras. Exit Rhydon via Surf.

Fat Lip 5, Mick 5

I take the opportunity to sub in Moltres to face Venusaur. Venusaur Sunny Days. Moltres Flamethrowers. mmm, toasty.

Fat Lip 4, Mick 5

Gyarados comes out to face Moltres... and yhalothar Jolteon. One Thunderbolt later...

Fat Lip 3, Mick 5

For whatever reason, Fat Lip brings out the already weakened Pidgeot. One Thunderbolt later, down IT goes.

Fat Lip 2, Mick 5

Seeing Alakazam coming, I switch in Wigglytuff. Alakazam Psychics, and Wiggly somehow hangs on to Body Slam about half life off. A second Body Slam is dodged by Recover, and Wiggly eats another Psychic. G'night.

Fat Lip 2, Mick 4

Moltres returns, Alakazam Recovers in the face of Sunny Day. Psychic, Flamethrower, Psychic, no dice for Moltres.

Fat Lip 2, Mick 3

This is not good.

I send out Alakazam and Calm Mind as it shakes off the Flamethrower. I Thief, it Recovers, I Thief again, it dies.

Fat Lip 1, Mick 3

Arcanine is left - and Extremespeeds for the kill.

Fat Lip 1, Mick 2

I throw out Jolteon and have it Thunder Wave, it Flamethrowers poor Jolty to death.

Fat Lip 1, Mick 1

Lapras uses Confuse Ray... BALLSHOT! Surf... BALLSHOT! Does Fat Lip get the Hyper Potion in time... nope. One Surf finishes it. NEW HERO!

Fat Lip 0, Mick 1

Oh, and I actually had to reset in the Lance fight. Fucking Aerodactyl AP boosted.

Whoops. I meant to say Soothe Bell. Got them mixed up.

Interesting bit about those hidden items. I'll have to check that.

The thing is, what do I do with Pokémon that are maxed out already that lose their tameness? My Latios is angry with me for temporarily moving it to my Green game, and I've already fully-trained it to my needs. I don't want to increase it's level since it's already Lv. 50.

Make it win pokemon contests, eat pokeblocks, or deal with it. It's not like your Latios uses Return.

True.

I didn't realize contests increase tameness. I'll have to try that.

How do you use it? Well, here's how it works. Once an item in the KEY ITEMS POKCET is registered, you can use it by pressing SELECT...

Also I forgot to said this earlier, but I had fun beating Brock with only a Lv. 15 Beedrill. xD

You might not want to give it vitamins if you're link battling actually, unless they've changed the way vitamins work from Ruby/Saph. Since you're limited on the amount of stat exp you can gain now, vitamins are only an option if you want a generally well-rounded pokemon, as opposed to one with exceptional stats in a few categories. Speed, for example.

Yeah, that's why you give it vitamins only in the stats you want to raise, not all of them.

Although on second thought, 20 vitamins probably isn't enough to max out happiness...

Yeah, it's really not enough... but happiness can be maxed out fairly easily, so it's not that big of a deal. At least it's a solid chunk.

I saw something weird when I was raising Pokemon before Elite 4 2: Electric Boogaloo - my Alakazam had just stolen a Ditto's Metal Powder. The Ditto did its thing, then used Thief on me... and it didn't take the item back.

Can the AI not take items from your Pokemon?

I've had a bunch of wild Kadabra's use Trick without getting my item, although I just assumed it was because they didn't have an item of their own.

Does Trick fail in link battles if the using Pokemon doesn't have an item of its own?

No, it still works. They just made it so a wild Kadabra can't make off with your rare berries, Master Balls, etc
