It's quite obvious that some pokemon are based on animals, some are based on plants, and some on other stuff. Sometimes it's easy to tell whey they're suposed to look like, and sometimes it's not. I believe Fearow is a crane.
I think Slowpoke/bro/king is a manatee.
And I think Rhyhorn/don is a rhino.
Also, Snorlax might be a bear.
And I'm pretty sure Sneasal is a weasel. Or some sort of cat.
(sorry about all the edits)

Vileplume is based on the flower Rafflesia Arnaldi, THE largest flower in the world, according to the Guiness Book of World Records. It's denoted by it's pinkish petals with white spots on them, and are commonly found in Amazon-ish jungle/rain forest areas.

That's also why it's Japanese name is "Rafureshia."

And I have a suspicion that Gloom is based on the Genus Asclepias, due to the fact that Asclepias is a carnivorous plant Genus where some of the species emit the smell of rotting flesh.

How do I know this?

The answer should be obvious.

Golduck is based on the Japanese monster kappa.

Lanturn is based on the Angler Fish.

Nidoking and Nidoqueen--also rhinos.

Vileploom--there's a HUGE tropical flower that emits the scent of rotting meat to attract poliinators. I'm sure this is what Vileploom was modeled on.

Alakazam and Machamp are modeled after people, more or less. More in Machamp's case, Less with Alakazam (which also has some cat-like elements). Same with Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan.

Snorlax--looks like a bear to me.

Mew and Mewtwo--Mew looks more feline than anything else...As for Mewtwo, have you seen a Sphnix cat? It's a relatively new breed--it has no hair, a big belly, and big knobby feet. Mewtwo is a dead ringer for this thing...

Kabuto is a trilobite. Kabutops is a trilobite, with, er, legs. Omanyte is a nautillus snail. I think you got these guys mixed up.

Cyndaquil--hedgehog? porcipine?

Ampharos is supposed to be a dragon, in the same sense that Charizard and Gyarados are dragons (none of them are actually Dragon type, but they can interbreed...er, wait--Ampharos can't interbreed with them).

Pineco is in fact a bagworm. It's an unusally disgusting kind of bug, with a truly disturbing form of reproduction.

Shuckle--I think they were thinking along the lines of a barnacle when they designed this...

Dunsparse--apparently, a snake.

Gligar--flying scorpion.

Cubone and Marowak have a dinosaur look to them.

The Jumpluff series is based on a dandelion (or other similar weed).

Wobbuffet--this guy will be a mystery for the ages. It gets my vote for Coolest Looking Pokemon Ever.

I think Eevee is a combination of cat, dog, rabbit, mouse, and fox. It's just a cute li'l furry thang with weird powers.

Drowzee is based on a Japanese legendary creature, Baku, which eats dreams and, according to legend, can be called on to eat bad dreams by writing its name on a piece of paper under your pillow. It looks like a tapir.

The Japanese name for Spearow is Onisuzume, literally, "demon sparrow."

Delibird might be based on a seabird that lives on rocky cliffs, like a penguin.

Serebii is a time-traveling green hamster with antennae and feathers.

Thom Burr: Vileploom--there's a HUGE tropical flower that emits the scent of rotting meat to attract poliinators. I'm sure this is what Vileploom was modeled on.

I've seen this thing in real life. It blooms very infrequently, so they make a big stink about it (har har) whenever it does. I took a special trip out to this place to see one, with assurances that it was one of the most rancid scents on Earth and grandmothers would be passing out and children would be puking...and we couldn't smell a damn thing. I put my face right in there and...nothing.

I didn't see stars or die or anything.

Apparently, they have bum years.

Sucked.

Ampharos is supposed to be a dragon...

Looks more like a giraffe to me, but it does say something about dragons in the Pokedex.

Wigglytuff was obviously meant to be an embodiment of all that is good and pure and just and mighty and heterosexual.

The best proof that Amphy is supposed to be a dragon is its Jap name Denryuu. "Electric dragon."

As for some of the others...

The Nido royalty are some kind of reptile / rabbit cross. The 'Dex talks about Nidoqueen having scales.

Doduo and Dodrio most closely resemble ostriches.

Kingler gets its name because it's conceivably a cross between a king crab and a fiddler crab (fiddler crabs have one huge pincer and one small one).

Rhyhorn is a rhino, Rhydon is a rhino / dinosaur cross. Like that Soundgarden song "Rhinosaur." Heh.

Electabuzz is an ape of some sort.

Magmar is a hadrosaur (duck-billed dinosaur).

Lapras is a plesiosaur.

Cyndaquil is an echidna, also known as a "spiny anteater."

Xatu is clearly influenced by North American totem pole designs.

Dunsparce is a winged snake. Lord knows why.

Heracross is a Hercules beetle, hence the name. (Hercules = Heracles).

Sneasel is presumably a weasel. Though I've never seen a weasel with such huge claws and peacock-feathers.

Remoraid is...a remora. Those are the fish that customarily latch on to sharks, or in this case, Mantine.

Did you know there was a type of seahorse called a sea dragon? Well, that's why Horsea, Seadra, and Kingdra have "dragon" as their 'Dex entry...

Smeargle's some kind of humanoid dog. I think he's based on Snoopy the beagle. ^^;;;

The answer should be obvious.

Yeah, your smarter than me. I feel stupid now.

Mew looks more feline than anything else...As for Mewtwo, have you seen a Sphnix cat?

Yeah, now that I think about it, Mewtwo does look like a Sphinx. The mews are deffenetly feline. I guess that's why they're my favorites.

Kabuto is a trilobite. Kabutops is a trilobite, with, er, legs. Omanyte is a nautillus snail. I think you got these guys mixed up.

Ooops. I was thinking that trilobites were those prehistoric aquatic snail things. Now I remember what they are, your right.

Delibird might be based on a seabird that lives on rocky cliffs, like a penguin.

I refuse to believe that Delibird is a penguin. But that's just me, I'm insane.

Child molester...good one.

Heh, yeah, I read that on someone's website. thought it was the funniest thing ever since I hate that damn mime.

The Nido royalty are some kind of reptile / rabbit cross. The 'Dex talks about Nidoqueen having scales.

Reptile rabbit, now that sounds cool.

Did you know there was a type of seahorse called a sea dragon? Well, that's why Horsea, Seadra, and Kingdra have "dragon" as their 'Dex entry...

Yeah, that's why they're some of my favorites.

The reason I know about the 'plume is that as far as I know, I have the only English website dedicated primarily to Vileplume.

And I always thought Delibird was a Turkey of some sort.

The Deli could mean Delivery AND Delicatessen.

Delivered.

I pronounce them almost identically.

Delibird = Auk/Penguin + Santa

Ain't it creepy how its uh...tail is the sack? Its tail has a hole in it and is hollow to put things in! Eef.

Porygons are ducky. Particularly Porygon2. You know them drinky bobby birds of old? It does that in Sta2.

When the English names of the G/S Pokemon were first leaking out, Smeargle ("Dooburu" in Japan) had "Ebeagle" listed as its English name.

You know them drinky bobby birds of old?

The entity you know as "White Cat" is just a drinky bobby bird hitting buttons on the keyboard at random.

Ahem... There are such things as humanoid Pokémon. It just happens to be that one's a child molester, another's a slut, several have this insatiable lust for blood and violence, and another looks like Uri Gellar. In relative terms.

Lemme get this straight, though. Ampharos is an "Electric Dragon"? Very funky. I thought the word for electricity has something to do with "Rai" or "Pika", because I know "Chu" means mouse or something like that. Then I saw Raidramon from Digimon, and said, hell, it must be Rai. "Denryuu"? Umm, the closest thing to that I've heard was Ryu from Street Fighter. Not very close to Rai at all. Split it up for me?

Snorlax is a human. I am a splitting image of a Snorlax. Snoooooree!!! LAAAX!!!!!

For the last time, Raikou, Suicune, and Entei are mutant hamsters. Aipom is a crack monkey, and Smeargle's not that far off. He's a crack beagle. Eevee is a creature unto its own, with the cuteness of a small puppy, the tail of a fox, the head of gawd knows what, and an all around giant cuteness factor. But I always refer to them as my bitches, so they must be dogs.

Voltorb and Electrode are actually based on a form of a static ball. Really. There is something in electronics that looks like them, I just can't remember right now. Some sort of resistor.

Ryuu means dragon.
Den means electricity.

Denryuu means electric current (Exact translation). But I think that the meaning is "Electric dragon".

Rai is "thunder".
Pika doesn't mean anything, but Pika pika means "flash".

This topic got me to think a bit.

Since the only animals in the World of Pokémon are the pokémon themselves, then...

How did people get milk before Miltank was discovered?

I'm sure I've seen people butter their breads and eat ice cream in the RBY episodes of the anime -but where did the milk come from? Miltank wasn't discovered then!

Maybe it came from Tauros? No, it can't be. Tauros is definitely male. At least it was in RBY, before the genders were introduced.

*get's a disgusting image in his head*

Urrgh. Forget it.

Pika is a Japanese onomatopoeia for electricity or sparks.

Pika is also the name of a small rodent in real life.

Hey, I think Scizor looks like an ant more than a mantis, wich in fact is Scyther.

Hehehe... just realized you can make a kind of Godzilla movie with pokémon using Feraligatr (Godzilla), Venomoth (Mothra), Qwilfish (Bathra), Exeggcutor (Biolante), Aipom (King Kong >_< ), Dodrio (Kingdora)...

Hope you know some of these names...

"Chu" is the sound of a mouse's squeak.

How did people get milk before Miltank was discovered?
Miltank wasn't discovered then!

Contrary to what the G/S games (very stupidly) claimed, the existence of most (if not all) of Pokemon 152-251 had been known for a long time by the residents of PokéWorld. It simply doesn't make sense that 100 new species of Pokemon suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Also, there are many examples that contradict this:

"Spinarak Attack" - Officer Jenny says that her police department has been using Spinarak for over a century
"Mild 'n Wooly" - Someone says that Mary's family has been herding Mareep for a long time
"A Sappy Ending" - How could such a strong symbiotic relationship between Heracross and Butterfree develop in just three yeras?
Quagsire Ep - The residents have obviously known about the Quagsire ritual for a long time
"Ignorance is Blissey" - Jessie says that "I always knew [Chansey] would evolve into a Blissey"
Sunflora Ep - The town's Sunflora contest must have been going on longer than three years
Gligar Ep - "Gligarman" has been around for many years

And how could Lugia, Ho-oh, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, and Celebi be "legendary" if no one knew about them until three years ago?

As for "no other animals", in the second SS Anne episode we see regular, non-Pokemon fish. I'm sure there are many other examples...

Also, Ho-oh (#250) is seen in the first episode. So they were around. Just not for the public

In "Go West, Young Meowth" (I think that's the title, anyway), Meowth reveals he went to Hollywood as a kitten because he saw a Meowth in a movie eating fried chicken.

Well, in the game, you learn that when a child's naughty, their parents tell him/her that he/she'll be send to Whirlpool Islands and'll be eaten by Lugia, or something like that ^_^ So, Lugia, at least, has been around for some time. There's also mention of Ho-oh (in relation to Burnt Tower) and it's somewhat obvious that Suicune and company have been sealed in the Burnt Tower for quite some time (ref. Crystal version).

As for what Sneasel is, it's a Nyura, or Nyula, whichever the proper English spelling is.

Den isn't really electricity, as far as I know, but, rather, Denki is. I look at Denryuu's name as being "Den(ki)ryuu" (i.e. the "ki" omitted). That's why I think that the English name shoulda' been Electragon (being short for "Elect[ricd]ragon") ^_^

Denryuu means electric current (Exact translation). But I think that the meaning is "Electric dragon".

Wow, Meowth must have really expensive tastes if he wanted to eat Moltres...

Victreebell and Weepinbell are inspired by Nepenthese(ne-pen-THEES) plants, a kind of pitcher plant. Picturs of them can be seen at www.sarracenia.com/faq.html . Just what is Asclepias, CrystalMeth? I know a thing or two about carnivorous plants, and I have never heard of it.

FYI:Contrary to my name, I used to come here a long time ago. Isn't it odd that you never forget some things, like your password?
