Since I haven't encountered any newbies playing G/S yet, I've been wondering what misconceptions they have about the game/Pokemon/attacks/etc. It might be interesting to hear what they believe.

They think Kingdra, Houndoom, Heracross and Steelix are the best Pokemon ever.

They frequnently use the moves; Iron Tail, Dynamicpunch, Fly

They absolutely adore Light Ball Pikachus, and don't know about Thick Club Marowaks.

If they do attach any items, it's always Leftovers.

They love to count weaknesses, and create a team that can 'counter' all types.

Their favourite Pokemon is Pikachu and Charizard, both poorly raised with crappy attacks.

They have 4 moves of the same type on a Pokemon (Whirlpool, Waterfall, Surf, Water Gun & Ember, Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Fire Spin)

They don't understand the concept of stats, or of Genes.

*Uses Houndoom, is training Kingdra and Steelix, uses Dynamicpunch on Alakazam (hey, try it sometime f00)*

They absolutely adore Light Ball Pikachus, and don't know about Thick Club Marowaks.

Marowak can use Thick Club? No way!!!! j/k

Does anyone ever read "Mew's News" on Pojo.com? People send some really stupid stuff in sometimes. For example, someone wrote that there are only two "shinies" in each game: the Gyarados and a random Pokémon.

Good work. I didn't know you did that as well...

Hmm... they might use Lugia and Ho-oh, thinking they're all good and such.

They might use annoying things, such as OHKO Poliwrath and "Kamekaze" Misdreavuses.

They have a tendency to like high-damage and low-accuracy moves.

They use "good" Pokés and give them crap movesets.

They don't use Leftovers, they use Quick Claw.

Someone I know has both a Raichu and Ampharos knowing Zap Cannon and Dynamic Punch.

Someone else has a L:100 Porygon (probably Porygon2 now) with only Normal-type moves.

Another person has six high-level Pidgeots, yet no Starmies.

Most of them are clueless to the wonders of baton passing and how smeargle isn't entirely useless. A great number of them still swear by the starters. I still see newbie sets like what I started off with when I started playing blue:
Ampharos
Thunder
Thunderpunch
Thundershock
Thunderwave
@Magnet
But then, nobody could beat my old blue's Blastoise:
Bubblebeam
Surf
Skull Bash
Hydro Pump

A big misconception:

Slowking evolves from Slowbro.

I've seen it in many Pokémon walkthroughs.

Other big misconceptions I've heard:

Pidgeot is pure Flying
Gengar is Ghost/Dark
Vileplume is Grass/Dark
Gust is more powerful than Aeroblast
It is possible to be shiny and get max stats
Electrode is Electric/Steel
Grass attacks are super-effective against Dark
Steel is resistant to absolutely everything
Blissey learns its moves later than Chansey
Pichu evolves at random
Egg hatching times are random
The bug catching competition is timed in steps like the safari zone.
Iron Tail is the be all and end all of attacks.
You have to wake up at 5am to catch some of the Pokémon, since they can only be caught between 5 and 6 AM. (Replace 5 and 6 AM with any other one-hour stretch)

Of course, the biggest misconception about GS is that:

"I've beaten the elite four! Now I have nothing to do! Too bad I can't get a Pikachu in GS..."
