Attach the desired item to a Pokémon. Stand in front of a PC, and save the game. Access the saved file, and deposit the Pokémon with the item. Then change boxes. As soon as the words:
SAVING...KEEP POWER ON
finish appearing, switch off the game.
When you go back into your save, you will have one if the Pokémon, with the item attached, in your team, and another, identical Pokémon with the same item attached in your PC.

Is there a risk of deleting your game? I don't want to try it until I'm absolutely sure.

Yeah, I'd say there was a huge chance, you're switching off when saving, that's worse than releasing Missingno., but who cares?! You can now clone Pokémon on your own, and don't need to do it with a friend!!

Actually, AFAIK it's completely safe unless you get the order in which you do it wrong. Switching off when trading is dangerous(with the data being transmitted thru the cable etc), but this seems fine as long as you do it right. I've always been really careful when doing this, and not a single item's been deleted(I don't really approve of cloning pokés in most circumstances, I just use rattatas to dupe items).

While this trick may work in G/S, DO NOT attempt this in R/B/Y as there is no SAVING ... KEEP POWER ON message time delay. Usually it will not work, that is, the pokemon gets deposited and the box number gets changed. However, twice in Blue I got a "file data was destroyed" message when I switched boxes and turned off the game boy immediately after switching boxes. I had to restart the game...... Luckily I had transfer all the Blue pokemons into Stadium and still have Red and Yellow games...

I'm duped items many times in G/S... I turn off the game when its in the middle of displaying SAVING...KEEP POWER ON

Maybe that "KEEP POWER ON" dialog shouldn't have been put into the American version. It's like using reverse psychology.
