I know most people think they are dogs but if you know anything about Japanese mythology you will know they are cats. I haven't studied them too closely yet but after seeing their pictures and reading a bit about them I can tell you they are based on the Japanese gods of the North, South, East, and West. There are only three right? So they didn't do all four gods I guess.

Unless ya count Arcainine. He's sort of like the runt of the family(STORY IDEA!)

Entei is definitely a lion, and Raikou is pretty clearly a tiger. Suicune looks less like a cat than the other two, but it wouldn't make any sense to have one oddball dog (someone here said it's a leopard). Apparently they're taken from Japanese mythology.
