Decided, on a whim, to go to the closest tour stop to me (blah) - a decision influenced in no small part by overwhelming nostalgia and a feeling that, since I almost certainly won't bother getting Diamond/Pearl, this'll be the last pokemon event I ever go to, ever.

Anyway. Weather was shitty, rained all day. Got to the store at about 1pm where I discovered a surprising amount of people in the section they'd cornered off. I'd always assumed that once the original players (i.e. us) grew up and lost interest, the pokemon franchise would die out too. The number of kids (who, judging by their age, probably only started playing during the Ruby/Sapphire generation) there wasn't something I was expecting, and I guess is a testament to the awesomeness of the game, or the power of Nintendo's marketing division or something.

Got a Mew for my Sapphire cart - gone are the days of the oversized machines you plug your cart into, like for Celebi and the original Mew giveaways; now the Nintendo staff just commandeer your gameboy and send it down a link cable. Not as cool. After that, I watched some kids fighting on the Diamond/Pearl equivalent of Stadium on a Wii with a bunch of pokemon I didn't recognise, whilst my brother fought a couple of link battles (my team isn't anything like battle-ready, and probably never will be). Went home after suddenly remembering that I am now old and probably looked like a paedophile.

I wasn't old when I started playing this game. Sigh.

yay for late responses

It must be the marketing division. The games no longer have any attracting power whatsoever on their own - at least to me.

Then again, I'm old, just like you are. It's a bit sad to know it's all different now - but the memories are awesome.

I heard the Australians had a tournament or something recently. I guess I'd have been more motivated to train a team if we'd had something similar here.

I was really hoping that Diamond/Pearl would have some sort of amazing unique selling point that would justify getting a copy (and a DS), but it seems not. The wi-fi thing seems cool but isn't probably something I'd use all that much - for me, the fun in battling is very much tied to being face-to-face with your opponent, insulting their sexuality in between moves etc.

You got a Mew? Cool. Nice to know that there are things in the pokemon industry that come across as extremely lucky or extremely rare to get.
