Brasília Pokémon League - Brazil
(Brasília is the capital of Brazil)

Yeeess! We down here had another official tournament! I was in charge of it due to my win in the last Brazilian Elite Four Challenge (see the link below). Before I will post some steps I´ve taken to made it become reality.

There is a magazine called Pokémon Club Evolution here, and it "sponsors" the officials tournaments. The editor, Eric Araki, had offered support announcing the Pokémon League DF in the magazine. This brought some players from another brazilian states (including Săo Paulo, a 14 hours trip by bus, where is held the Elite Four Challenge). We also printed some posters and got support from Brazilian pokémon web sites.

Looking for a place, I contacted SESC Unit (Serviço Social do Comércio, Commerce Social Service). They usually hold Anime Exhbitions, so I hope they would accept the idea of a pokémon GB tourney. Their contact said that they couldn´t hold the tournament, because they rent only the audience room (we wanted the Entrance Hall). Then, she gave me an anime club phone number, Anime 13, suggesting we would join them up. That way, it would´ve been able to present the Anime Exhbition (since they rent the audience room) with the Pokémon League. Some phone calls and everything was set up. ^^

It was time to get the material. A friend of mine, Érick Ribeiro, helped a lot. We used his rack, television and Nintendo 64 (Pokémon Stadium 2, joysticks & transfer pack). I´ve bought some link cables too, but a lot of players had them too [Smile] . We also have taken 36 photos and recorded the final battles in a VHS tape (it was a 2 in 1 TV [Smile] . The plan is make it a digital video and upload to the internet ^^

Okay, here are the rules, right from the written project.

---===(Rules)
The Brasília Pokémon League rules are based on the Prime Cup rules from Pokémon Stadium 2. In case of breaking them, the player will be automatically banned.

Team Rules:

- Max of 6 pokémon by team.
- Max sum of levels equal to 600.
- Guardian Clause (cannot have Mewtwo, Lugia or Ho Oh in the same team).
- Only certified Mew & Celebi (hehe...)
- Item Clause
- Specie Clause
- Sharked freaks are banned.

Battle rules:

- 3x3 Battles
- Time limit of 10 minutes. Ties are decided by higher sum of final HPs (in percentage).
- Sleep Clause
- Draw Game Clause (Explosion, Selfdestruct, Perish Song or Destiny Bond with the last pokémon)

Prizes:

1ş Place: Tickets for the entire Animecon 2002 (where the BR Elite Four Challenge is hold); 1 Pokémon TCG Neo Light deck and; Pokémon: The Movie, VHS Tape.
2ş Place: 1 Pokémon TCG Neo Light deck and a Pokémon: The Movie, VHS Tape.
3ş Place: Pokémon: The Movie, VHS Tape

Furthermore, the first place win the due to battle Joăo Paulo "Lorde Noga" Nogueira (me..hehe), one of the three champions from last year E4 Challenge. It will be a full battle (6 pokémon each side) according to the rules, except time limit. If the first place win, he/she will receive the due to fight BR E4 during Animecon 2002, with no need to win the tournament there.

*Only the Animecon Champions can face the BR Elite 4.

---===(o)

So, it occured last Saturday! We arrived there around 12pm, and there were some players outside already. The place was prepared, so we started the subscriptions. A lot of parents arrived with their children, and SESC entrance hall was really full! There were players from 7 to 18 years old, I think.

By 15pm, the battle pairings have been set up. There were 50 players and 6 groups, and it was an eliminatory tourney. I couldn´t pay attention to the battles, because I was a judge (with more 3 friends). Soon we had the groups champions, and the semi final round took place. After them, the players were in the final round. We also draw two Pokémon: The Movie VHS Tape between the players ^^

A funny thing! Twins were in the final round, with a player from Săo Paulo City. They were (with repective teams):

Rafael Novaes Miguel
Mewtwo - Snorlax - Kingdra - Zapdos - Houndoom - Steelix

Felipe Novaes Miguel
Mewtwo - Snorlax - Kingdra - Zapdos - Umbreon - Arcanine

Ricardo Yamamoto
Mewtwo - Blissey - Porygon2 - Electrode - Vaporeon - Umbreon

*Miguel Bros´ teams had clonned pokés with diferent movesets.

Like I said before, the final round was played using Pokémon Stadium 2, with a lot of people watching! The battles were:

::Rafael X Felipe

Kingdra vs Kingdra... they both used dragonbreaths until Rafael´s was down. His Snorlax took Felipe´s Kingdra with ease. Snorlax vs Snorlax. Felipe tried some Fissures, while Rafael Body Slammed. Rests later... Rafael´s Mewtwo came in and got rid of Felipes ´s Snorlax with a few Spc. Def. Fell. Mewtwo vs Mewtwo, and Rafael got the advantage with Shadow Ball.

Rafael got 2 points (Snorlax and Mewtwo)

::Ricardo vs Felipe

Electrode vs Snorlax. Ricardo Reflected, and Felipe Fissured, missing. Porygon2 came in, and was OHKOed. Electrode again, and another OHKO. Ricardo sent out Mewtwo. Psychics & Fissures, when finally Snorlax rested. It was a fish poké, so started with Sleep Talk and more Fissure/ Body Slam. Mewtwo got rid of it when Felipe miscalculaed Sleep Talk, and missed. Ricardo´s Mewtwo vs Felipe´s Zapdos. T-wave and mud-slap messed with Mewtwo, when Felipe´s Mewtwo came in. Some turns later, Felipe won over the lack of Ricardo´s luck.

Felipe got 2 points (Zapdos & Mewtwo left)

::Ricardo vs Rafael
The most boring battle of the day!! Porygon2 vs Snorlax. Double Teams & Body Slams, until Rafael´s Mewtwo came in. Ricardo became a bit confused because Porygon2 was almost fainted, so he tried to send Electrode in and risk a Mirror Coat. Unfortunatelly, Electrode took a Psychic and Spc Def penalty when entered the battle. Next turn, it fainted and Porygon came in. I went to the bathroom this moment, but seems that Felipe´s Kindgra knockouted porygon2 and smokescreened Ricardo´s Mewtwo before fainting. I´m sure you all know how boring a battle between Mewtwos can be! This way, Ricardo´s M2 reached Struggle while Felipe´s one had more than 50 Pp yet.

Rafael got 1 point (Mewtwo left)

So, this way Rafael became the I Brasília Pokémon League Champion! [Smile] We took some photos and then the Final Challenge happened! I built my Immuno team (immunity based) just for this challenge! ^^

::JP Nogueira vs Rafael

My umbreon faced Rafael´s Kingdra. I mean looked and took a Dragonbreath. Missed a toxic and ate another Dragonbreath. Finally hit Toxic, and the next turn I rested. In the Kingdra´s last turn, I switched Blissey in.

6 - 5

Marowak took place to make Thunder-Wave wave fail. Predicting a switch, I hit Mewtwo with an Earthquake. He switched again to Snorlax, being hit by Earthquake again (I´m not sure... I can´t recall it correctly). Another one to finish Snorlax..

6 - 4

Rafael called Mewtwo, and I switched to Skarmory while it recovered. I tried to use Toxic on Mewtwo, but zapdos was hit in the switch. Then Marowak came in again. He risked some Mud-Slaps and a Drill Peck, while I missed my Rock Slides. To clean it, I rested and then switched to Skarmory (mud slap missed), poison damage, and switched to Marowak again (t-bolt missed). As long as my 'wak was fast asleep, he brought up Houndoom. Sleep Talk and a OHKO by Rock Slide.

6 - 3

Steelix came out! Marowak woke up and used Rock Slide, flinching. Then I used Earthquake, and he exploded!! Marowak as left with 13 HP! ^^

6 - 2

Zapdos came again. To protect my Wak, I sent Umbreon out! He Drill Pecked and fainted due poison.

6 - 1

Umbreon vs Mewtwo. Predicting a Submission, I switched Gengar in! Done! I thought he would use Psychic, so I planned to send Blissey. Then I realized that I attacked instead of switching!! Mewtwo used Shadow Ball (!) and I Countered it! ^^ (luck!). Then Blissey came out when Mewtwo Recovered. Remembering his Submission, I did Counter but he recovered again! I thought I screwed the fight, but did Counter again! Submission failed. I asked myself why Rafael kept using Submission, but used Counter again!! Sub was countered and Mewtwo was down!

6 - 0

So, this was the final challenge! The people stayed in the hall after the tourney, trading some pokémon, battling and talking about training. We took the last photos and then disassembled our material (TV, N64 and stuff).

Now, we´re planning to make another Pokémon Legue next semester! So, I will keep you informed about the official tourneys here in Brazil! ^^ Next post will be about our official national tournament, the II Desafio ŕ Elite dos Quatro Brasileira (II Brazilian Elite Four Challenge), July, 18th to 21th. If you wanna know what happened last year, here is the link

Anyway, when and where do you plan to publish the videos/photos of the battles?

On that legendary clause, did it mean you can't use ALL 3 on the same team? Like, you could use 1 or 2 of em, just not all 3 of em? Cause, according to the statistics, people used Mewtwo (just curious)

P.S. I'm kinda jealous that you have a league thing, but, I 'might' get to go to the Pokémon Center in New York next summer...

Each team could have only one guardian (Mewtwo or Lugia or Ho-oh).

Due some tourney rules here, we call the cheap trio "guardians" and the birds & beast "legendaries" [Smile]

Hrm, you've got a point there.. Roberto Carlos ain't too bad, though i could have put Ronaldinho in there [Razz]

Plus I think you may be right with you taking the World Cup home with you, though i hope you get your ass beat by South Korea. [Razz]

Please mind my mild bitterness for being knocked out by Brazil [Mad]
