Not as of yet.
Though there is a major international event coming up (World Cup of Soccer/Football), so maybe we'll get something. Hey, Square and Nintendo are back together, so ANYTHING'S possible.

I wonder, if there was a tourney, how many people from this board would have to shark up teams because they've never actually picked up a Gameboy, and became 'experienced trainers' by spending their lives on #pokebattle. [ 03-19-2002, 02:41 AM: Message edited by: Dragonite21 ]

I just finished raising my Magmar to L100 last night. Now I've got 5/6 Pokemon raised, with only one decent Water-type left to choose and raise.

I thought it was forbidden to use game-sharks for tournaments? Or, what exactly are the rules? (I don't know that much about tournaments yet)

GameSharks are evil.
Althjough i have one, and i use it every so often to shark up a stupid leveled team on Stadium or something. Although i never use sharked pokemon for a tourney. It would just be unfair to the other people who trained properly, and anyway its evil i tells ya!

There is nothing wrong with sharking providing you do not mess with pokemon DVs. Sharking saves time. Any old dope could continuously go through the elite four training up their pokemon but for tournuies, etc, the question is who can battle the best not train the fastest. Yes, sharking can be mistreated but the people who do this are generally caught red-handed. Sharking is just like training but is less effort and less time wasted. Who here likes training pokemon? I don't. In fact the whole game of pokemon is crap, except the battling.

Well, according to that, couldn't you say that since it is possible to find a Pokemon with Max DVs, then using a gameshark to do it would be "less effort and less time wasted"?

No. By using a gameshark to catch a max DV pokemon is wrong, simply because catching a max DV pokemon is down to chance. By using a gameshark to do this you are by-passing the luck value of the game. The difference between sharking a pokemon to level 100 is that you are merely doing something in 5 minutes which would normally take a couple of hours to do and won't actually affect the outcome of a battle as the stats would, in the end, be the same. Catching a max DV pokemon may never happen without a gamshark no matter how many hours you try because the odds are so low whereas leveling up a pokemon obviously will given time.
The bottom line is by using a gameshark to level up an already caught pokemon won't effect the outcome of a battle in a tourney whereas using one to catch a max DV pokemon obvously will.

I just played through the entirety of Pokemon Gold recently, and I was surprised by something.
It was actually fun.
You see, the reason the game seems so boring these days is because people play with the focus of ultimately making a powerful team similar to the ones commonly seen on GSBot. While making a powerful team is one of the most important factors in Pokemon, it is not the only thing.
Play to have FUN. Just casually make your way through the game, catching whatever you feel like, and just let the winds of fate carry you or something. I've come to realize that Pokemon is surprisingly relaxing if played in a fun and casual manner.
Not only that, but this may just be me, but as I level up my Pokemon more, no matter how tedious it gets, I get a bit attached to that Pokemon. Like my Sudowoodo. Right now, I'm leveling it up to 100. Previously, I liked it quite a bit, but now, it's grown on me. Quite a cool Pokemon Sudowoodo is.
That brings me to a point that riles me the most and is a persistent problem (on GSBot especially): people who don't play for fun. This is also why I think I get more out of the game than a lot of people, and why so many people get tired of Pokemon. I play with Pokemon I like (or don't mind). When I battle other people, I battle for fun. If I lose, so what? If I might win something and I lose, so what? If it was a fun battle, then it was worth the loss.

Noting that I have a 55 base HP ice on my Zapdos... but that doesn't make it _good_.
Good Hidden powers happen. Rarely. The only one worth speaking of was my 70 Ghost HP on my tyranitar.
Gamesharking tends to ruin the game.. _I_ for one enjoy the training part, even though I have little time to play now, with my job.
I honestly don't care if people gs themselves stat exp or to level 100, but it IS the DV altering that pisses me off. The next team with each pokemon having a base 70 HP that just _happens_ to perfectly match what it lacks, I will literally reach over and yank the cart from my opponent's gameboy, power still on. It'll be worth it. >=)
Cheating takes away all the competitive aspect of the game. If any game could be won by cheating, everyone'd cheat. It's not a sportive event unless cheating is disallowed.
Hense, I will narc on gamesharkers in tourneys. Even respectable ones. I just cannot find enjoyment from a game where cheating becomes the norm. It's good to see not everyone has turned to the dark side...
And it's not like great DVs are that hard to come by. =)

Legitimate HP Legendary Birds are nothing. It's the legitimate HP Legendary Dogs that are absolute crap most of the time*.
* = I have a legit 65 Water Power Raikou. But it's just a pinch too slow for my tastes. ;_; Damn my perfectionism!
...What the hell is the point of a 70 Ghost Power on a Tyranitar? Wouldn't its Crunch outdamage that on Psychics and Ghosts? (Alakazam takes a mere 10 max points more from Ghost Power; Gengar takes much more damage from Crunch.) Crunch also has that delicious chance of SD drop.
And everything that came from my Blue cartridge had Steel Power on it. ;_; I do, however, have some exceptional HP Pokémon via breeding. My pride and joy right now is my maximum Water Power Magnemite. I've also got an exceptional Flying Power Magikarp and Rock Power Heracross (which only took 15 minutes to get!). I also think a Bug Power on Aerodactyl would be fun to try; that might be my next breed, actually. ~Uiru

But with the breeding element, couldn't sharking non-legendary DVs be argued as saving time? I recently Monster Brained my Ditto's defense to 15, the only DV I've ever touched. The only DVs I ever plan on doing that with is Dittos, after I find one with the right special I'll dupe it and edit. Flame me now. And I realize Ditto is harder than most to get good DVs for ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

I don't know about that last statement. About three months ago, I noticed I had a Wobbuffet with 1FBF/F DVs. I bred it with a Gastly to transfer the FF DVs, and used the Gastly offspring in Yellow to run the Shiny Ditto trick. I have a bunch of 6F7F Dittos now, so I can pretty much ensure that all my "serious" pokemon for RBYGSC are going to be pretty close to max DVs.
I've read of several other people that have done this, which is not surprising, considering Meowth346 and "incompetant" were the first to report the, er, technique in the AH Research Lab. And spunman has written up a guide on how to use DV transfer to breed for Hidden Power...
Every now and then I wonder if DV-transfer Dittos don't push the line into cheating by just more than a little bit. Meowth346 seems to be be of two minds on the subject, but his comments are typically cryptic--and I haven't really ever seen a serious consideration of the subject anywhere else. I've never fiddled with a shark or played with Missingno., but in the end, I've gotten more or less the same results in just about the same amount of time, which makes me pause.
It seems like the "Shiny Ditto" trick should be completely legal, considering that it's not a painfully obvious glitch (perhaps it may even be a deliberate feature--or failing that, could be a considered to have become a feature, the way software glitches sometimes do) and simply uses the game code to make the mods that one might otherwise have to endlessly search for or simply shark instead. And since the results of DV transfer cannot be discerned by any known means from regular pokes, even if it were considered to be "unethical" (whatever that is), there would be no way possible to "stop" it.
Still, it all seems sooo easy that _something_ has got to be suspect about it. I wonder if the various new characteristics, ribbons, and personalities coming in Ru/Sa weren't designed specifically to significantly reduce the importance of DVs in the game... The shiny ditto trick is usually what it takes to stir me up from the grave. I came across DV transfer during my temporary leap into G/S where, in a quest for stats, I lived and breathed dittos. Transform seemed to have messed with ditto stats and I linked that to DVs. After reporting this, everyone exploited it as they wished.
The ethicality is another issue. Meowth346 is two faced on this because while he thinks it's illegal as a glitch, he probably feels that this is too insignificant to really worry about. Having started all of this business, I'd say it's cheating without any questions asked. It's a glitch, a very obscure glitch at that, that has been exploited to get various breeding dittos and many were hoping it would be a way to get mew without a shark. Even if the mew thing worked it would still be as a result of a glitch, a thing which has been forbidden in nintendo's tournaments.
Of course it's not really been discussed because few seem to really care about it and it's not as radical as some other glitches. I remember back during the old original nintendo tournaments, reps would go on about how you should start games over just to get more TMs and say the pokemon cloning trick was cheating. At the pokemon fun fest, they talked about missingno. like it was normal and they even asked a trivia question about it. I guess times change. I actually have caught my own breeding ditto without use of the trick, but that's just me. I have my own set of abuses of glitches that I tolerate and some that I don't, making me better than a sharker only by subjective standards.

Got my Ditto, but it's not like I even plan on using it against more than one specific person, who will also benefit from my Dittos. I'm training pokes to give to him just for the purpose of having SOMEONE to compete with. If you can call it competition.

GP-Chan: "id probably quit every battle, and not just every other battle." ThumbsOfSteel: "Why, because they broke the rules?"
