I’ve seen a lot of talk about how the CPU on Stadium screws with the random number generator. I’ve never noticed any major skewing of luck, and even if it did happen on my cart, I’ve been able to win just fine without it.

But yesterday, in a match with the R2 Rival, I noticed a definite streak of luck.

My current theory is: “The computer’s luck gets progressively better the further you proceed in the game.

Here’s the full battle, in GSBot log form (even though it wasn’t GSBot.)

Begin battle: PKMaster vs. Rival!

PKMaster sent out Infinity (UMBREON L100)!
Rival sent out LUGIA (LUGIA L100)!
Rival’s LUGIA used AEROBLAST!
A critical hit!
PKMaster’s UMBREON used MEAN LOOK!
Rival’s LUGIA can’t be recalled!
PKMaster’s UMBREON is at 54% health.
Rival’s LUGIA is at 100% health.
“54%,” I thought. “Even if the next one crit-hits, it shouldn’t be able to KO.” Of course, I never checked that on the Damage Calculator...
Rival’s LUGIA used AEROBLAST!
A critical hit!
(2 shots, 2 crit-hits)
PKMaster’s UMBREON fainted!
Dubya Tee Eff.
PKMaster sent out pwnage (SUICUNE L100)!

PKMaster’s SUICUNE is at 54% health.

PKMaster’s SUICUNE used ROAR!
Rival withdrew LUGIA!
Rival sent out MEWTWO (MEWTWO L100)!
PKMaster’s SUICUNE is at 100% health.
Rival’s MEWTWO is at 100% health.
Rival’s MEWTWO used THUNDERBOLT!
It’s super effective!
PKMaster’s SUICUNE used MIRROR COAT!
PKMaster’s SUICUNE is at 55% health.
Rival’s MEWTWO is at 12% health.
One Surf should do it...unless it Recovers.
Rival’s MEWTWO used THUNDERBOLT!
A critical hit!
PKMaster’s SUICUNE fainted!
PKMaster sent out Masochist (BLISSEY L100)!
Last I checked, a crit-hit Submission would come 3 HP short of the OHKO, killing Mewtwo from recoil..
PKMaster’s BLISSEY is at 100% health.
Rival’s MEWTWO is at 12% health.
Rival’s MEWTWO used RECOVER!
It restored HP!
PKMaster’s BLISSEY used CURSE!

All 6 Curses in place.
PKMaster’s BLISSEY is at 68% health.
Rival’s MEWTWO is at 100% health.
Rival’s MEWTWO used PSYCHIC!
You’d think by now, with the luck he had early on, that at least ONE of those 6 hits would give SD Down...
PKMaster’s BLISSEY used SOFTBOILED!
It restored HP!
PKMaster’s BLISSEY is at 100% health.
Rival’s MEWTWO is at 100% health.
Now, for why I call it “Masochist.”

PKMaster’s BLISSEY is at 66% health.

This looks like an effort to PP waste by Rival. But he doesn’t use PP Up, so it’s a wasted effort.
Rival’s MEWTWO used RECOVER!
It restored HP!
PKMaster’s BLISSEY used DOUBLE-EDGE!
It’s hurt by recoil!

With a fully Cursed Blissey at 524 HP, able to KO Lugia in 2 more hits, and Ho-oh in 2, this battle looked like a lock for me. Only one thing could stop this win. One Aeroblast PP left. Two chances to let loose with it. 17% to crit-hit and deal enough damage to KO.

Now, the verdict.

No time to Rest. Time for one last shot.
PKMaster’s MEW used HORN DRILL!
1 left.
One-hit KO!
Rival’s HO-OH fainted!
PKMaster won the game.

Well, it’s now taking up 7 pages in Word. The team remains undefeated. But Lugia CH’ing all 5 times with Aeroblast, including one against a 500+ HP Blissey that kept him in the match? No other opponent gets that kind of luck, so it seems that “Enemy luck improves the farther into the game you get.” Any comments and/or experiences?

CPU luck most certainly gets better the farther along the game you are. There is a simple reason why, too. Nintendo can't:

1. Build up strong teams to face down strong trainers.
2. Get the AI to really get better the farther along you go.

The luck factor is an easy way for Nintendo to increase difficulty without all the other work that would, in the end, make the upper levels of Stadium much more enjoyable.

I'm of the mindset that not every game should be beatable by every player. The final stages of Stadium should represent the competition at the World Championships rather than Nintendo's skill with number generators.

Well the computer really does like to cheat. Once on Stadium2 when i was battling Lance's Kangashkhan, I was using zam. It had a reflect passed to it so it should have been able to kill it no problem. Psychic then misses, and Kang gets a ch Hyper Beam. Zam faints even through reflect. Oh well no big loss. I bring out machamp. Wow Cross Chop missed. Kang recharges. I CC again. Once again a Miss. Kang hyper beams again and scores a ch. Champ does die though. Then CC miss AGAIN. Kang recharges. the, once more CC misses, Kang gets a third CH and kills Champ. Anyway it goes on that i lose. *duh*

But Nintendo really should put some better AI in. Like maybe predicting solarbeam on houndoom or somthing. Making them switch more. Cause giving them luck is goddamn cheap. Really cheap. They should fix it or die.

Sometimes Stadium's luck runs out. I had a T-tar out once against Bruno's Machamp, and figured "oh, shit, it's dead", so I just Hyper Beamed for a little more than half damage. Cross Chop missed. It missed on the recharge turn, too. I Hyper Beamed again for the KO.

I also beat Lance's Draggy with my lone Mew, paralyzed and starting at half health, but that battle lasted half an hour...

The only time I had luck against Stadium 2 was in Challenge Cup (amazingly). My Nidoking switched into an Umbreon as it used Double Team... Nidoking then hit the four or five times it took to KO the thing, all while Umbreon continued to use Double Team. This freaked me out. It was R2 mode too.

Oh, though I suppose Starmie and Jynx and Alakazam constantly using Reflect against my usually totally Elemental-based team counts too.

This is just a thought, I figure the computer does cheat. Like, I was battling something, it was some water Pokémon I think, well, anyway, I was using like a 99.6% chance hit move, and it missed twice, and this was without any doubleteams/sandattacks, etc...

My only real guess is that the computer took advantage of the 0.4% chance and the computer was holding Bright Powder...

But, the one time I totally defied the computer's odds was when my focus band worked 3 times in a row

But, here is what my original idea was going to be. Go battle the computer in "Free Battle" and select mode "Hard"

Give the computer a team with nothing but horn drillers.

See how many times OHKO happens. Now battle again with the same teams on Easy mode and watch the results. I wouldn't be suprised if the random number generator gets more "fudged" on the computer's behalf based on what difficulty you set for the computer.

Also, that would explain why the computer gets tougher later in the game. The first battles are easy, then they get normal, then the Rival and Red are HARD!

I've beaten the entire Rival's team using just Snorlax.

Just a note though, I think it went something like this. I had my Scizor against Rival's Lugia, and, it annoys me that when Scizor is swords danced to the max, a hyper beam STILL won't kill Lugia! I mean, 999 ATTACK Stat and a 150 Base Attack you'd think would murder anything! But not Lugia, I mean, that's messed up!

A simple thing to do against that is to take hyper beam off of Scizor. Return is better. Also, in Stadium2, are the rival's pokemon always at L100? If they are, I probably won't beat the rival until I get a shark, since I'm too lazy to train them that long.

NOTE: The stadium2 pokes hold items that dont make any sense, like black glasses on Wobbuffet. Thus, its unlikely that they have Brightpowder on almost everything

Stadium 2 has given me several times the benefit of straight critical hits. More often than not, the computer shift the odds toward it and hands me my ass.

I've noticed that in Stadium 1 the elite 4+rival get harder the more you do it.

In the beginning I was working to get Amnesia Psyduck, beating elite 4 with 3 lvl 100s and 3 rentals that weren't in the hall of fame. However, I actually started losing sometimes against rival! In the end, it became quicker to get pokemon in the HoF through prime cup (8 battles vs. 5)

Just earlier today, my friend came over. He was working on R2 Stadium 2 GLC. He had (IIRC) a Lugia, Espeon, and Jolteon, just trying to get through it. Well, I forgot who he was fighting, but I think it was the first trainer in the Cianwood gym. First out is Espeon. It uses Psybeam, Dragonair Horn Drills. OHKO. Jolteon comes out and uses Thunderwave. Dragonair recovers with a PRZCUREBERRY. It uses Horn Drill. OHKO. Last out is Lugia. It uses Psychic. Dragonair down to 8 HP. Horn Drill. OHKO. 3 Horn Drills, 3 hits. Ugh.

R2 Poke Cup.

My L55 Blissey (one HELL of a tank).

Enemy Male Attracting Flareon.

Blissey Curses up against a leading Attract and repetitive Body Slams.

Leftovers puts Body Slam's effectiveness at a minimum.

PP waste seems almost sure.

Until...

Blissey is FULLY ATTRACTED SEVEN TIMES IN A ROW.

At that point, Flareon has expended 14 Body Slams, and Blissey has almost 50% health left.

Flareon used its final Body Slam.

You guessed it--Critical Hit. Blissey fainted.

Odds of that: 1 in 2048.

Ugh.
