From last night's Pokemon chat at wizards.com (I got this from Pojo):

master_trainer_mike presents the speaker with question #96 from feralshade:
will there be any side events featuring the GB titles, as in some leagues,
or will Nintendo have no affiliation with the STS?
master_trainer_mike says, "There are no plans for gameboy stuff at the STS
at this time."

They don't want us at their piddly little tournament. Now, if only Nintendo would give us a tourney.

The day Nintendo makes a tourney is the day Givera goes straight and Rei posts an intelligent thread.

I mean what does Wizard have to lose anyways. A small fee would cover the costs of running it. And who knows, people could be attracted to their products and instead of gaining no money from the tourney, they gain some money.

Convo between me and cmsnrub25:

<DonaldTheriault> Can you clue me into something?
<NickWhiz1> yeah?
<DonaldTheriault> What did Wizards do now?
<NickWhiz1> Hold on.
<NickWhiz1> I'll copy my post.
<NickWhiz1> From last night's Pokemon chat at wizards.com (I got this from Pojo):

* NickWhiz1 runs
<DonaldTheriault> Assholes.
<NickWhiz1> Meh.....
<NickWhiz1> It's in San Diego, so it doesn't concern about 99.6% of us.
<NickWhiz1> :/
<DonaldTheriault> Yeah.
* NickWhiz1 notes the STS main event has been held in a total of three different places
<NickWhiz1> The Queen Mary (San Francisco?), the Meadowlands (NJ), and the SD Convention Center.
<DonaldTheriault> I wonder if we'd have a snowball's chance in hell if someone sued Nintendo to get them to hold a World Championships
<NickWhiz1> Meh.
<DonaldTheriault> Thanks anyway.
* NickWhiz1 thinks there should be an STS in the middle coast ^_^
* DonaldTheriault wants to go to a competitive Pokemon event
<NickWhiz1> Actually, a GBSTS would be nice. But it'll never happen.
* NickWhiz1 wonders what would be so wrong with a GBSTS
<DonaldTheriault> That would require EFFORT.
<NickWhiz1> Meh.
<NickWhiz1> And the STS for the TCG don't?
<DonaldTheriault> Wizards cares. Nintendo doesn't, apparently.
<NickWhiz1> (Note that STS was meant to be plural.)
<NickWhiz1> Meh.
<NickWhiz1> Maybe somehow we can convince Wizards to have a GB event.
<NickWhiz1> Then again, we have a better chance of Nintendo making an event.
<DonaldTheriault> Agreed.

Ever thought about how Wizards are really into selling lots of trading cards as opposed to doing Nintendo's job for them?

The Queen Mary is in LA.

Also, stop bugging WotC to do anything with GB. They don't own the rights to it, and aren't going to be profiting from it. The fact that they still focused on cards at the Nintendo sponsored Pokemon Fag Fest is besides the point, because the cards will pull in big cash, while the GB games are merely to tide our whining and bitching at them.

If you want to get a serious GB event, bribe Nintendo to do it, or sign Nick's petition. ^_~

We don't need to write letters to Nintendo. We need to write letters to Game Freak. Think about it, Nintendo is in it for the profits (nothing wrong with that, btw). Wizards can make a profit from big card events (ie it sells more cards). Nintendo cannot because whoever shows already owns the game. But Game Freak made the game for the sake of bringing gamers together. Nintendo saw two game paks and thought: double profits. Game Freak created two game paks thinking: Pokefan get togethers. Game Freak would care more about tournaments than Nintendo would.

This brings up a curiosity question. Does anyone know how many or how often Nintendo holds official Game Boy events in Japan? My guess would be more since the game is more popular there and with the country being so much smaller than the USA traveling would be less of a problem. I was just wondering if anyone had any facts about that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Game Freak doesn't have the $$$$ needed to pull off any sort of tour or tournament.

And if one does come, I won't get to go, because I live in a very remote area. Damn.

There probably wasn't any extra profit for Wal*Mart to justify the hassle. Remember taking employees from regular duties to host a sponsered event costs money too in man hours. Toys R Us and the other sponcers of the TCG League sell extra cards because of hosting the league.

None of this will EVER happen until Game Freak gets an overseas office. They seem to have disappeared... Must be Nintendo's fault because they aren't giving money to the developers like they should.

Then again, the people that make the japanese pokemon cards don't have an office here either.

Someday Nintendo will lose EVERY developer, distributer, agreement, etc that they have so EVERYTHING on ALL of their systems and products will be first party OR they will end up being almost slaves like Sega and 3DO and have no hardware department...

Well, even Wizards is in it for the money. When they hold a tournament, they get both money from the tourny fees and from any card sales they get from the enterants who are desperately trying to round out their decks before the tournament begins.

The GB players come in, pay their fee, then take up space until it's over, not contributing anything extra to Wizard's sales and only giving up a paltry $5 entry fee to occupy the area for 4+ hours of tournament play. If you add in anything besides just the space their occupying (Like, say, referees, or TVs and N64s with Stadium 2, even if just for the later rounds) then it starts looking less and less profitable.

Apparently money wasn't important to the other countries that had tournaments, most notably the UK.

Just to add some senseless whining....
Canada hasn't had a Nintendo tournament; ever. I guess it's for the best because we have no memories to wish again for.

Yeah, and how come Volkswagen isn't doing a GB tour either! Fuck them! They hate us!

Fractyl: Nick did write a polite, yet strongly worded letter and sent it to nintendo via electronic mail if I remember correctly

That's a good way to go about it, but you can't be too surprised when it doesn't work. Even if you had 10,000 signatures, that's just a drop in the bucket compared to the whole Pokemon market.

You have to understand that Nintendo is doing something special for us when they give us a tour. We should appreciate what they've done for us so far. Everyone would like another tour, but Nintendo doesn't owe us anything...
