I got there at about 9am, and finally found the place in the rain. I waited in a small entranceway with about 10 other people. Most of them had their Game Boys out and were playing. I occasionally picked up some of the talk that was being said. Stupid rookie things like: “No matter what level the Pokémon is, Ember is more powerful than Fire Blast”, and
“I heard you can get Pikablu by using a Water Stone on a lvl 100 Raichu.”
My two friends shortly turned up, but had to stay outside because the real queue was at a different entrance. The 10 that were in the entrance (that was us) would be allowed first to sit at the tables as we had been waiting there longer.
At 11am and after some confusion about why we weren’t in the right queue, I sat down at a very squashed table with rows of Link Cables. Surprisingly, my friend (who had came about an hour later) sat down next to me and my other friend sat behind me.
The tables were quickly filled up, and we were explained about how to win and what to do if we lost. We were given our score sheet, and were unsure when to start, so we did anyway. The guys that my friend and I were against were two of a group of about five. They knew parts of advanced Pokémon mechanics, eg. box trick etc. but not as much as me. So we began.
This is basically what I used, without changing between battles:
Slowbro
Surf
Thunderwave
Amnesia
Rest
Snorlax
Double Edge
Double Team
Amnesia
Rest
Mewtwo (I had to… just to be safe)
Psychic
Amnesia
Substitute
Recover
To my surprise, I was pretty confident I might lose my first battle, as I sent out Slowbro against a Gengar, which immediately used Hypnosis, and I fell asleep. After a few Night Shades and Dream Eaters, I realised that Slowbro would die before waking up. I couldn’t use Snorlax; hence it’s one Normal attack, so out came Mewtwo.
I apologised for using it, and pulled out a Sub.
Dream Eater missed (I suppose he wasn’t expecting me to switch).
Mewtwo used Amnesia
Gengar used Hypnosis
Mewtwo’s fast asleep
Gengar used Dream Eater (Minimal damage to sub)
Mewtwo’s fast asleep
Gengar used Night Shade (Sub broke – somehow)
Switch for Kabutops
Mewtwo woke up
Mewtwo used Substitute
Kabutops used Swords Dance
Mewtwo used Amnesia
Kabutops used Swords Dance
Mewtwo used Recover
Kabutops used Swords Dance
At this point I was VERY worried!!
Switch for Mewtwo (Umm, yes……)
My Mewtwo used Psychic (About 1/3 damage off)
My Mewtwo used Psychic (Critical Hit, damn! About 1/10 damage off)
Mewtwo used Blizzard
My Mewtwo used Psychic (About 1/4 damage off)
Mewtwo used Blizzard (Critical Hit, sub broke)
My Mewtwo used Substitute
Mewtwo used Blizzard, and missed
My Mewtwo used Psychic (Very small amount of HP left)
Mewtwo used Recover
My Mewtwo used Psychic (Very small amount of HP left)
Mewtwo used Blizzard
My Mewtwo used Psychic – 1st opponent’s Pokémon down
Out came Gengar
Mewtwo used Psychic – 2nd opponent’s Pokémon down
Out came Kabutops
Mewtwo used Psychic – WIN!!!
So Mewtwo saved my ass - Oh dear! How cheap am I!!
My friends had already won their matches so we all got a stamp on our score sheet and called for some new challengers.
The second match was a breeze through.
I sent out Slowbro
He sent out Mewtwo
Mewtwo used Thunderwave (Slowbro’s paralysed)
Slowbro’s fully paralysed
Mewtwo used Psychic (Hardly any damage)
Slowbro used Thunderwave (Mewtwo’s paralysed)
Mewtwo used Psychic
Slowbro used Amnesia
Mewtwo used Psychic
Slowbro’s fully paralysed
Mewtwo used Psychic
Slowbro used Amnesia
Mewtwo’s fully paralysed
Slowbro used Amnesia
Mewtwo used Psychic
Slowbro used Rest
Basically after I woke up, I took his Mewtwo out with a Surf or two, then he came out with something - I can’t remember, and I said:
“Listen, do you wanna quit now, coz I’m just gonna plough through your team.”
He agreed and pulled out the link cable. Second win in the bag!!
By this time, my friend sitting next to me had destroyed two little kids, and so had 3 wins! I need to catch up, as we all wanted to go face the ‘Master’ one on one together.
3rd kid sat down with his brother/friend and I asked him if he had any Pokémon over lvl 100… He said no and we began. Slowbro again out first with Mewtwo facing me.
Mewtwo used Psychic (Hehehe)
Slowbro used Thunderwave
Slowbro used Amnesia
Mewtwo used Thunder (I thought, Amnesia should help me here - Critical Hit!!! Dead Slowbro!)
Out came my kick ass Snorlax
Snorlax used Double Team
Mewtwo used Psychic (And missed)
I had Double Teamed for 6, and Amnesiaed for 3, with only I think one Blizzard and one Psychic hitting me.
Snorlax used Rest (Just to be safe)
Mewtwo used Psychic (And missed)
Snorlax is fast asleep
Mewtwo used Thunder (And missed)
Snorlax woke up
Mewtwo used Psychic (And it hit, not a lot of damage though)
Then I screwed up a bit and forgot to change moves
Snorlax used Rest (Doh!)
Mewtwo used Psychic (And missed)
Snorlax is fast asleep
Mewtwo used Blizzard (And missed)
Snorlax woke up
Mewtwo’s fully paralysed (Finally!!)
After that, Double Edge killed Mewtwo and his other two (which went by so fast, I can’t even remember them), also feel prey to Snorlax’s Double Edge. I love my new Snorlax!!
Snore-lax! 3rd victory was mine. One of my friends had 4 wins, and the other was still working on his third… Next guy was the big brother of this little kid who faced my friend (Again! Another little kid for him!!!)
This time Snorlax came out first, Double Team up for 6, Amnesia for 3, Double Edge. 5 Double Edges were used to win. This was too fast. Although, he did get Snorlax down to 40HP somehow, but Rest sorted that out. I was just glad I didn’t lose him.
One more win to go face the ‘Master’.
My friend had won his 5, and was waiting for me and our other friend… Who surprisingly lost to a 10 year old kid , but was given a win anyway - Weird!
Yawn, one more to go, as a little person sat in front of me. I went through the rules with him and asked him if he was good. He nodded his head. I saw he had won only 1 battle, so I’m guessing he had just started.
Out came good old Snorlax again and I set him up, basically making his Mewtwo useless. After destroying his Mewtwo like all the others, out popped a Mew, and I asked him to show me the OT name. Sure enough, it wasn’t official, as the OT name was Bob… Oh how stupid were these kids! After smashing his Mew up, out came an Articuno. It went like this:
Articuno used Blizzard (And missed)
Snorlax used Double Edge
I called a guy over so he could stamp my score sheet, and said:
“I’m about to win, could you stamp it for me?”
He replied:
“You’re that confident are you?"
Double Edge killed Cuno and I turned to him:
“Yeah, stamp it please!”
My 5th win was finally mine!
Me and one of my friends decided to go queue up to face the ‘Master’, which wasn’t Dave. We found out that Dave was in Japan on some secret Nintendo thing. I dunno, but this guy called Rich (also part of the NOM crew) was filling in for him. He was sitting on a throne thing with tables around him and a simple chair with where the challenger sat. Very nice.
Obviously, everyone was using Mewtwo, and I found out that Rich had three different Pokémon to choose to have a one on one battle.
The rules were:
One on One battle.
One one Recover move for each Pokémon (these only include Rest, Recover, Softboiled).
You must tell him your Pokémon first, and then he chooses one of his three and battles.
Only battle him once each day.
And I knew that he was most likely to use Mewtwo. His three which he choose from were:
Articuno
Ice Beam
Blizzard
I didn’t see him use another move other than these
Mewtwo
Psychic
Blizzard
Hyper Beam
Recover
Mewtwo #2
Psychic
Blizzard
Thunder
Recover
I think he had two Mewtwos. I know the first one he definitely had, but I’m not sure about the second.
I was going to use my champ Snorlax, but I trusted MewtwoSama and went with his Exeggutor moveset – Benedict.
Exeggutor
Solarbeam
Leech Seed
Sleep Powder
Substitute
After only about 5 people before me beating him, I had already talked to him a bit, about why Dave wasn’t there and how Mewtwo is cheap.
If you beat him, then you got a Gold badge saying:
“I beat the Nintendo Official Magazine Pokémon Masters”
And if you lost, you got a Silver Badge with like:
“I played the Nintendo Official Magazine Pokémon Masters”, and a sticker saying:
“I got my ass kicked by the Nintendo Official Magazine Pokémon Masters”.
I was the first out of us three friends to go up against him… I wasn’t really nervous at all now I think about it. Everyone was routing for me behind me, as I would be the first to challenge him with something other than Mewtwo. The only thing I was worried about was Mewtwo’s Blizzard. But with Egg’s near as high Special, it wouldn’t be much of a problem… I hoped.
We started off, and I suppose I was pretty cocky about it.
Mewtwo used Psychic (Hardly any damage)
Exeggutor used Sleep Powder
Mewtwo’s fast asleep
Exeggutor used Leech Seed
Mewtwo’s fast asleep
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor used Substitute
I was set up now; I was holding all the cards.
This is when I started to talk to him, and how this Exeggutor moveset kicked all the NoA reps' asses... Or did it??
Mewtwo woke up
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor took in sunlight
Mewtwo used Hyper Beam (Sub broke)
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor used Solarbeam (Critical Hit, about 3/4 damage)
Mewtwo must recharge
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor used Sleep Powder
Mewtwo woke up
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor used Substitute
Mewtwo used Blizzard (Sub broke)
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor used Sleep Powder
Mewtwo woke up (Damn, 2nd time that happened!)
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor took in Sunlight
Mewtwo used Recover (His one recover move)
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor used Solarbeam (About 1/3 health left)
Mewtwo used Blizzard (Sub broke)
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor took in sunlight
Mewtwo used Blizzard (A surprisingly small amount of damage)
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor used Solarbeam (Tiny amount of HP left)
Mewtwo used Hyper Beam
Leech Seed saps health
Exeggutor used Sleep Powder
Mewtwo’s fast asleep
Leech Seed saps health
Dead!
I discovered that all you really need is a Mewtwo with:
Hyper Beam
Toxic
Double Team
Recover
To actually beat his… After I had my picture taken and name recorded, I asked them to quote me in the magazine: “Mewtwo’s cheap!”
Then my two friends killed him with their Mewtwos and we watched a few more matches against Rich. All of them sure enough were Mewtwo users, and most won. To hand it to the guy though, he did use Articuno a few times, and it didn’t do him much good facing all these people.
So after that, we wandered round the sports hall, got some free drinks, and went to watch the Stadium display. Tons of people were gathered round about seven N64s with Stadium in them, no transfer packs though, and everyone was battling each other with rental Pokémon. Very boring at the moment.
I asked my friends if we could get a stop off at some card trading tables. But no luck trying to find mint condition Scythers, Wigglytuffs, Articunos etc.
In fact, I saw one girl with a Charizard in a plastic cover, totally mint. I asked her what she wanted for it, even though I already had four. After looking through my folder, she noticed my 1st Edition foil Ditto and said:
“That’s the second rarest card, Ditto is.”
I asked her what she thought the most rare card is, and she pointed to her movie promo Mewtwo.
“This card is so rare in America, because it was given out with a book and they named it the rarest card.”
I told her I had five, but she still went by her beliefs. Before I left to go find my friends again, she asked me if I had 1st Edition Geodude, Graveler and Golem. I walked off in disgust.
We walked around for a bit longer and decided to go see how Rich was doing. I asked if anyone had beaten him with something other than Mewtwo yet. And guess what… No one had but me so far! So we watched the battles that he did against kid after kid. I’d say he had about a 10% success rate, and he said that his Mewtwo was letting him down, so he was using Articuno… But still, he kept losing. I offered to give him my Exeggutor in pity.
Me: “You sure you don’t want my Exeggutor?”
Rich: “No, I only play with my team. They pull me through when I need it.”
Me: “But they’re not pulling you through! You’ve lost so many times!!!”
We started to ask him if he was running out of victory badges, or if he got compensation every time he lost... Hehehe
(Cat Gonk, you may want to read this bit!)
Along came a 10-year-old kid and sat down. Rich said to him that if the kid didn’t use Mewtwo, then he wouldn’t either. The kid wasn’t going to anyway, and brought out a Jynx!! I was very impressed by his love for this Pokémon, and it was faced with an Articuno. Bad move Rich!
Jynx used Lovely Kiss
Articuno is fast asleep
Jynx used Blizzard
Articuno fainted
I was very pleased for this kid, as he showed that you definitely do not need to use Mewtwo (mind you, he wasn’t up against a Mewtwo like I was.)
And that was the day. We walked out and went back to the station where we got the train, tired but extremely pleased with the event we had just participated in.
After getting to my station, I saw a KFC right across from me, so I had myself a little chicken lunch in the quiet restaurant before walking home through the park.
I can't wait till me and my friends go to tomorrow's one! We had sooo much fun!!!
