To spark some discussion...

...Everybody try to come up with a way to beat a Wobbuffet without using stat boosts/stat chops. I wanna see how many there are.

Sandstorm
Poison, Confuse, or Burn it before it gets a Safeguard off
Leech Seed
cumulative damage (not first hit) of Fire Spin, Wrap, Bind, Whirlpool, Clamp
Perish Song
Future Sight

At least, those are some of the things I've had to try when I face the thing in Challenege Cup.

Just use Dark-types. It doesn't matter if they have Dark attacks, as long as you only use Special Attacks.
Remember, you can't hit a Dark with Mirror Coat.

And if you see it use Destiny Bond, just PP waste with non-damaging moves until it uses something else, then move in for the kill.

Yeah, you can't hit a Ghost with Counter, either... Heh heh. Had a guy find that out the hard way on GSBot once.

Leech Seed and Perish Song will make it switch, but it'll still be back to bug you later. (Perish TRAP would do it, but if your opponent is fool enough to leave it in on a Misdreavus [which it couldn't hit back even if it used Shadow Ball] then they deserve to lose. ) Hitting it with a status attack might be futile, too, if Heal Bell is afoot.

Hidden Powers on Special Attack pokemon...(it'll need counter to defeat it..)

like Raikou with HP ice...HP ice, it mirror coats...it fails....crunch, it counters, it fails...then alternate, hoping for the best

I find the best thing to do when you're trying to outoutoutoutthink your opponent is to just pick one at random. Of course, it'll be crazy for your opponent, too... Wobbuffet could sit there and Counter repeatedly; Raikou would still use HP Ice a lot of the time.

Switch until it's out of PP.

*Had that problem with Biding Snorlax in RBY*

Also the Dark Special attackers...

*Tried using Wobbuffet against PokeSta2's standard Houndoom*

I honestly never thought of Mirror Coat not attacking Dark types. I knew Counter wouldn't work on Ghost types. Man, that's kinda the end of Wobbuffet if you play it right with a Dark type attacker...

See, that's why if you use Wobbu, you lay down Spikes. Then you give it an Agility or two and have it pack Destiny Bond. If a Ghost / Dark comes in, and you play it right, you can force a switch with Destiny Bond into Spikes...or just switch away Wobbu until after the problem has gone.

GSbot doesn't work like that. Once my Zappy used HP Dark (I forgot to change the DV's) on a Wobb and it used Mirror Coat to kill it. I dunno, they may have fixed it since then.

Just use a Crunching Houndoom or Tyranitar or a Shadow Balling Gengar.

Easiest way, and you're assured of taking no damage at all.

Quick test: Chikorita vs. Wobbuffet

Chikorita used Toxic! (Poisoned)
Wobbuffet used Counter! (No effect)
--
Chikorita used Light screen! (Effect 1st time only)
Wobbuffet used Counter! (No effect)
............
End of battle:
Chikorita 100% HP
Wobbuffet faints!

You know, I just thought of something, and it's kinda cool/cruel...

This is for how to beat Wobbuffet, so, let's say your opponent is using him...

If you have a Mean Looking Baton passer you are SO going to own Wobbuffet, why? Because you mean look him and there is NOTHING he can do. All the moves he can ever know are Mirror Coat, Counter, Destiny Bond, and Safeguard, so, after he's mean looked there is no way he can roar/whirlwind/baton pass his way out of it, so, you baton pass to someone who has a good stat mod (like someone who can curse 6 times) or a OHKOer who will eventually take down our favorite blue guy

Azdara2 the correct way to use Umbreon is to give it leftovers. then either (toxic, confuse ray, mean look) (move of your choice) or turn it into a batton passer. don't treat it like Houndoom for goodness sake.

That only applied back in RBY. In GSC, if a OHKO attack misses, a counter does no damage...

In Pok▲mon Stadium for N64, remember when I was doing my "countering horn drill" research?

Well, anyway, what I did was had my Wobbuffet with a focus band and I kept attacking him with a OHKO attack...

Well, I had Wobbuffet do counter every turn, and the misséd horn drills when countered did nothing.

Whenever Wobbuffet was finally OHKOed AND managed to hang on with focus band, he countered based upon the actual damage he took. So, if he had 500 HP, and held on with 1 HP, he countered for whatever 499 times 2 is...

So in PS2 for N64, OHKO has to actually HIT for it to be countered in any way...

I am right damm it. I just tried it out on gsbot again.

<evilgsbot2> Darran[away]'s DRAGONITE used HORN DRILL!
<evilgsbot2> Darran[away]'s DRAGONITE's attack missed!
<evilgsbot2> DMaster's SLOWBRO used COUNTER!
<evilgsbot2> Darran[away]'s DRAGONITE fainted!
<evilgsbot2> DMaster won the game.

As I said before I can't believe no one realised this.

Since it's been so long since the last post, I thought I'd take it upon myself to point out that GSbot is not the most reliable means of Research. The people who write programs like this are not the game programmers, and therefore do not have access to all the code in the cartridges. As a result, certain bugs may surface, despite the tremendous amount of work and research that goes into getting these things right. Lemme say I respect their hard work and the product that comes as a result.
But in the Research Lab, we're mostly talking about the systems of the Gameboy cartridge, or Stadium if it's specified.
I haven't researched myself, but I trust that if any of these guys say they have done research on the cart, that's how it works on the cart.

Still, I don't know about the Gold and Silver gameboy cartridges, but in RBY Cartridge, a missed OHKO countered for a OHKO, however at least in Pokémon Stadium G/S, a countered OHKO that missed did nothing...
