Alright, I just wanted a different topic for this one so I can look at the old one a bit more. I am putting the info on a website at:
http://www.pikacenter.com/pokemon/romhacking/index.asp
The info currently there:
Note: Data is currently Gold/Silver only.
List of needed programs and such
Assembly code dump (1.24 MB of it!)
Hexadecimical dump

NOTE: It would be extremely useful for me if I had a save file of a near-completed or completed Gold or Silver version game.

What Nintendo doesn't want you to know
Uiru: "Now that we're all used to the rules, clauses and by-laws... what would happen to the metagame if every one of them were whipped away?"
GP-Chan: "id probably quit every battle, and not just every other battle."
ThumbsOfSteel: "Why, because they broke the rules?"

They don't have any Gold or Silver saves. They have a Winnie the Pooh save, hehehe...

Hmm... I am having a whole lot of trouble with the save files. My name and my Pokemon's name are in about 5 different places and changing neither of them works. Does anyone know anything about the save files?

Well, what format are these save files in (i.e. which emulator are you using)? NO$GMB, Visual Boy, Boycott, and other emulators all have different formats.

It's normal to see the data in about five different places, and if you change all five at once, you should then be able to see the effect in your game. And then from there you can conduct tests to narrow down the address that is really the important one.

Furthermore, if you're using NO$GMB, it has this fishy behavior with loading and saving files. It only reads the save/snapshot files when the program opens, and it only really saves them when the program closes. So you need to close NO$GMB completely, hack the file, and then open NO$GMB again.

Hope this helps.

I'm using Visual Boy, and I did change them all at once. I'm going to fool around with it some more though.

I haven't dealt with Visual Boy Advance save=files, but I can suggest trying this: export the save file to a different format, edit that format, then import the file back. This way, if VBA has some weird compression scheme that makes the save files hard to hack, you can get around it.

How to I export it to a differemt format? And if the save files are different, I think I'll wait a bit longer to mess witht them because I want to document everything about hacking the Pokemon ROMs, but it'd be nice to document the stuff that's the same first.

Added:
Assembly code dump
Hexadecimal dump
I just did a dump from no$gmb for the maximum bytes allowed (9999). I'll have to manually add the rest later. Eventually I will actually figure out what it all means and document it for you lazy bums.

For editing Pokedex data, go to address 051B00. You should see something like this:
** 01 **
** ** **
** 02 **
In one of the columns. After the Pokemon number, edit the next five or six values to get this:
