Is it in the genes? Or is it in the type. Or is there something else.
Is there a guide somewhere to breeding? I'm thinking there must be, because it seems like I've heard of it.

Here's the guide everyone tells me to use. It's not that bad, really. If you read it a few times to understand, it can be damn helpful.
