Special attack and special defense use the same gene (the special gene) and the same stat EXP value (the special one). The big difference is that the base value may differ in Gold and Silver.

In a word, yes.

The big question I still have: how do you gain stat EXP in special? Defense? Attack? If it still uses the base values, it has to pick one, or average them...

I hope...

I can't believe you can't figure that one out. Stat EXP given is the defeated Pokémon's Base Stats. In Gold/Silver, there are 5 Base Stats: HP, Attack, Defense, Speed, Special.

So, the User's Stat EXP raises the amount of the Base Stats of the defeated Pokémon.

Uh...

I'm pretty sure that there are six base stats, with there being one for each special. This is how special attack and defense are made different, right? Special attack uses all the appropriate modifiers for special (special gene, special stat EXP, level, etc.) except that the spot in the formula that used to read "Base special for species" now reads "Base special attack for species", and similarily for special defense.

Right?

If I'm wrong, please supply correct info...

I'll have to look in my notes. My comtpuer was crashing, so I tried to hurry a reply, and didn't even pay any attention to what I typed (even now, I don't remember typing any of that). I'll have to check through my notes, or wait until I'm not busy so that I have a clear mind to organize my thoughts.

Okay, I can't find my notes, but I'm pretty sure that it's the Base Special Attack that decides on the EXp that the Special Stat gets. So, it's better to fight Abra than Drowzee when raising Special, since Abra has a higher Special Attack and Drowzee has a higher Special Defense, etc. However, I can't say this for certainty until I find my notes, but it sounds about right.
