Well, I found a way to keep the battle going after pokemon-stealing, but it takes 10 codes and the effect is kind of messy.
Enter these 10 codes _in order_. left column is for blue/red. right column is for yellow:
Start battle with a trainer with the GS switch _off_.
When you're at the menu, flip the GS switch on then off as before. A letter will appear at the top right of the screen. You want it to be an "S" for "steal." If it is a "B", flip the switch again and again until you get an "S".
Then throw your master ball.
When it says alright --somepokemon-- was caught!, flip the GS switch on and off. A letter will appear at the top right of the screen. You want it to be a "B" for "battle." if it is an "S", flip the switch again and again until you get a "B".
Then keep playing, the remnants of the caught pokemon will be frozen and faint immediately, then you can go on and battle the rest of the trainer's pokemon, and steal them in the same manner if you please.
