How do bannings work? If you ban someone with a dialup connection, all they have to do is log off, and then come back on with a different IP. How does the banning system prevent different people from doing this?

Well, how we do it at EzBoard, we put only the static bit of the IP: "64.112.4.*" for instance. The * will vary in placement depending on how much their IP changes that we can see. Usually if folk try to post and are banned, and they try multiple times, they'll give up.

Luckily, we can rely on more than just technological solutions...we have moderators with these things called brains that seem to do a good job of detecting disruptive users.

I know the moderators are smart and ban disruptive users. What I meant was, HOW do they ban disruptive users? Do you do it the same way EZboard does it (as Yay Porygon described)?

You just alter their account so they aren't allowed to post any more. Or delete their account.

If you don't have a password here, you can't post.

And, of course, we pay attention to who registers.
