I've been trying to catch Latias now in my Sapphire game. Whenever I've been in the same area as it, I've led with a L50 sunflora with a quickclaw. After a number of encounters where Latias fled before I could get an attack off, I finally got a sleep powder off, actually hit, and put it to sleep. It immediately fled. I've encountered it once since, and it was still asleep! It fled before I could do anything that time. Is this normal behavior, as it puts a monkey-wrench in the techniques I successfully used for the legendary beasts?

It just does. You could also Mean Look it if you don't have a Wobbuffet.

The same happened to me when trying to catch Latios. It's annoying... (-_-')
At least that gives more of a challenge to catch the Latis, I guess.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions, although I was mainly trying to talk about a peculiar situation. As to the Masterball, my daughters missed getting theirs, so I'll be giving mine to one of them.
Since I posted the message, I've whacked Latias a few times with a false-swiping L55 ninjask, & I now believe it to be at 1 HP. I'm training up a Wobbuffet, & I'll just chuck ultraballs at Latias 'till I catch it, or 'till it wakes up & knocks out Wobuhta. Then I'll put it back to sleep, etc. I still think this is really peculiar game design.

Well, if your lead (or last) pokemon is asleep you can withdraw from a wild encounter too.

Yes, I just return it to its pokeball, and go. Not an option for a wild pokemon. Also, wild pokemon never lose a turn trying to flee, have you noticed that? No good reason why, IMHO.

P.S. Those who were offering helpful suggestions might be interested in the final outcome. I put levelling-up Wobuhta on a back-burner today to earn money for an Energy Guru sale, so I was leading with a lunatone when I encountered Latias. This brings up a question: If I'd switched to Wobuhta, would Latias have fled? Or would the ability kick in immediately? Anyway, I just threw an ultraball at her. And caught her. Just 1 ultraball. I'm happy, but it's a bit of an anticlimax, too. Also, IVs: HP 18, Att 1, Def 0, Sp Att 0, Sp Def 0, Speed 0. Worst IVs of any pokemon I've ever owned. Sigh.

I thought I heard that the IVs of Latis were fixed at shit values like that.

If true, that's really wretched. All the in-game trade pokemon have had pathetic stats, too, although not so rock-bottom as Latias. Has anyone caught a good Latias/Latios? Is the same thing likely to be true of the one on Southern Island (Latios in my game)?

And on the topic of my thread, I guess I shouldn't have been shocked about its flying away asleep. When you talk to people in Pacifilog about the mysterious flying pokemon, they wonder "Doesn't it even stop to rest?" or something like that. I just didn't put 2 & 2 together.

Yeah, the information was already noted here (in one of the other forums) when R/S came out. The roaming Lati@s always has those 4 DVs/IVs fixed at 0. Probably another brilliant idea from Game Freak on how to catch those who use game cheat devices. The others are as random as any other pokemon.

As to the Southern Island Lati@s, they are all random. It's a nice little gimme. No fuss, no muss, just walk up to it, fight and capture (well, as easy as that is on a Legendary pokemon).

Oh, yeah, and to make this screw people over even more, the path of the roaming Lati@s has 'jump' exits from routes, just as did the Legendary Beasts (I thought that was a bug or oversight in GSC). With all that stacked against, I can't see anybody who's informed on the subject bothering with going after that bugger. Of course, somebody could be masochistic.

It was actually easier to catch than I expected, except for the sleep-flying bit. But, if they had to fix the values, why make them all 0s????! Why not all 16s, or all 20s, or even be nice and make them all 31s? I'm really steamed. Oh, well.

Has anybody figured out how the standard Lati*s compares to average members of other species?
