A friend of mine was releasing some useless Pokémon on his Ruby, when it came this Wailord's turn.
The icon shrinks to obliviousness... "WAILORD was released."

After that, one would expect the text "Bye-bye, WAILORD!" to appear, but...... it came back instead O_o'
One may also think it's a bug, but personally I think not, or no text would appear denoticing Wailord's comeback.

Instigated by curiosity, I tried releasing several Pokémon of mine, but no one said a thing -- all releases were successful.

Maxed out Tameness? Pokérus? Items? Some Pokémon fell into one or more of these categories, even so I was able to release them.

Mirage Island compatible? The Wailord I spoke a moment ago wasn't. And, if it had any connection to Mirage Island, I'd be able to release it the next day.

I wonder what makes it come back, and if this has been discussed already? O___o''''

All I have to offer is that I've heard of it happening before.

Wierd!

There must be some in-game data that can be picked apart to find out what feature the returning pokes have...maybe its random?

I've read that this was built into R/S to prevent the old RBY Cinnabar Island trick.

Fly/Surf to Cinnabar. Release all your pokes except for an L10 Caterpie. Wheeee! You're now stuck on Cinnabar forever!

Apparently, the game now makes sure that you can't release certain pokes in certain locations where pure stupidity (or perverse madness) might permanently strand you.

There's an idea.
So, try and teach surf to that Wailord and see if it still comes back.

I think his point was that knowing Surf is what keeps it from departing now.

Goddammit, I knew that.
I meant something along the lines of deleting surf, but since the move-deleter is on the mainland that wouldn't work either.
My apologies for thinking backwards.
