It's a Slowpoke I'm training... Lightspeed... Get it?

I have discovered that if a Pokémon uses Belly Drum while its HP is equal to or less than 50% of its total value, the attack will fail and no health will be lost. However, I have also noticed, in the Gold Trainer House anyway, that the Attack will still rise. Whether it's the full boost or not still needs research, but multiple trials have had a 1 HP Lv. 100 Slowpoke doing ~70% damage to a Lv. 70 Lugia with Shadow Ball without a 'failed' Belly Drum and constantly OHKOing the same Lugia with one.

I went ahead and checked, and this does not work in Stadium. Whether it works in Crystal or not; and whether it's the full boost or not (it might not be) remains to be seen.

Easy boost test:
Use BD the right way. Check damage.
Use BD the glitched way. If damage is about the same, it's full boost.
You kick ass.

Well, at these levels, it's either ~70% or OHKO, so it's hard to say. [Smile] I'll just put a Curse on it later and see if it still works. It would appear that the Health drop and the Attack raise are two seperate effects that aren't linked in GS; much like how Swagger's Confusion effect can be blocked with Safeguard but the Attack still rises.

And I have two grapefruit-intelligence brothers; ass-kicking is not new to me. [Big Grin]

So do you think Belly drum was meant to be used *after* your health has already dropped below 50%?

If it was, wouldn't that make us all slow, dumb idiots for not having seen the proper use of it, sooner?

Nope. I've seen enough to confirm that Belly Drum has two different effects.

If your HP is above 50%, Belly Drum will reduce it by 50% of its total value (rounding down) and will raise your Attack to the max.

If your HP is at or below 50%, Belly Drum will give a 'failed' message and increase your Attack by two stages, just as Swords Dance would do.

This was tested with Curse; one failed Belly Drum rendered Curse usable four times. After that, only the Defence rose. Even stranger is that you can use three failed Belly Drums to max out your attack just as you'd use three Swords Dances. Stranger still is that this DOES work in Crystal, meaning it either wasn't caught or was an intended bonus sideaffect that the Stadium programmers missed. I'm leaning towards this oddity being intentional- though I know nothing of how the game is coded, I DO know that something in Belly Drum's code has to give a two-stage boost as opposed to a twelve-stage boost- either a mathmatical equasion that puts 12 to 2, which can't be done accidentally with the HP-reduction formula, or a reference to Swords Dance, which would also have to be purposely programmed in. But, why does it give a failed message?

Serendipity rules the universe. And now I have something to update my site with. ^_^

I say we burn him at the stake, and elevate Uiru to the status of Koffing, eh?

Ooh. I likey. This can be big stuff. Curselax? Why waste two turns! You attack until you predict you're going into below-1/2 hp, then you bd, rest, and have a nice little swords danced attack thing going.

I sense a few new standard movesets in the near future...

What he knows is irrelevant if he doesn't tell people. Knowledge is meant to be shared, not hoarded. What good does it do?

Tell him he'll impress me if he can tell me WHY it does this. [Razz]

And it works on GSC, but not Stadium.

Jshadias: Now the people at AH want to kill you! Yippe!
Meowth346: It's not obvious "why"? This is a "glitch" that happens at other times, with certain other moves, too.
Jshadias: What certain other moves?
Meowth346: Maybe I can create a term called "order of effects" with moves.
Jshadias: That would be nice

I guess death threats kinda get the message across, eh?

Meowth346: If you think about it, and test, you can find these other moves. One with knowledge isn't obligated to share. Hording is seen thusly only those around the knowledgeable one ^_^

Jshadias: Are you talking about moves with dual effects>
Meowth346: Mm-hm.
Jshadias: Such as Swagger, the attack can be raised but confusion not inflicted
Meowth346: If you mean in the same way as Bellydrum is a "duel effect move."

Summary of additional conversation:
I finally got some decent information out of him. (YES!!!) He also showed me some demos of his work with extracting info via PHP.

Someday!? Isn't he already almost everything already! ROM hacker, mind reader, genius, Japaneese Speaker, Magazine Subscriber, Programmer, Guide Maker, Webmaster, I mean, I'm sure he's already been to the moon and back by now, and, last I heard he almost finished working on his black hole time machine and barbeque pit...

Were you discussing this on his forum? I can't find anything like that there.

...but damn, that forum is annoying. Lousy ads. ^_^; I'll soon have a homemade ad-less forum hosted by a good friend of mine... Just gotta get a new color scheme- the one on the current forums is atrocious. ^_^;

Maybe it was. Anyone else notice that Marowak can get Belly Drum but seems to have no use for it due to the Thick Club? Wak could've been legally maxing its attack on its own before Crystal. Too bad we didn't know that then.

Nice work, though, Uiru.

I'd say without. The comp isn't smart enough to be not using Curse when already hit to under half HP.

I used Curse once as an alternative to Perish Song from a Missy. It worked reasonably well for it's purpose (letting the local kids at least have a close game), and it meant that they never used Perish Song Missys. Plus, it meant you didn't have to switch the Missy out.

Then, of course, they all dumped Pokemon for the next fad game. Oh well.
