WHAT ARE THEY? Are they planes? Are they birds? Are they Supermens? No, earthworms. Why? Because the Gold Pokčdex Data says they leave fertile soil. Moles do the exact opposite thing. Earthworms do the same thing.

Someone even wrote in to Nintendo asking that they didn't have an answer or something... but, I think I have the closet we'll ever get to an answer. Anyone remember the episode "Tanks Alot"? Anyway, in it Team Rocket dresses up in a Dugtrio Costume and they have the red round thing part on their noses, so the evidence we have leans towards noses, but, it's still inconclusive...

The red thing is a nose. Remember "the trouble with digletts" (or whatever the very early episode starring Diglett for the first time was called)?

A lot of digletts came out of the ground, you could clearly see that the red thing was a nose.

I've been thinking a bit about this:

When you call out a diglett inside a house with, say, a steel floor, then what would happen to the body of the diglett? It can't dig if it's on a steel floor... So that's the way to see the whole body of a Diglett!

Actually, it is a nose, I was just making a joke.

If you look at a Diglett/Dugtrio from the side, it sticks out. I don't know of any mouths that stick out.

Ahem...Eartworms have no mouth at all. They don't have nose either. So: Either is hid by the fur, or they don't have it, like earthworms.

Diglet used metronome!
Diglet used fly!

Remember "The Underground RoundUp" Hopefully that's the right title, I'm talkin about the guy who was the Diglet Rancher and was trying to get rid of the Electrodes in the town... anyway, he had a Diglet come out the top of his hat... It's bottom part was still concealed IN the hat, but, atleast we know Diglet CAN be removed from the ground...

If a Diglett used fly on PS2 the little ground column would come with it. I tried in the lab once flipping it over and the ground went with it. I think that the little bit of earth is just a part of Dugtrio, like the flower is part of Venusaur.

But that makes absolutely no sense at all. then Diglett wouldn't even be able to move, if it's just a head stuck to a bit of ground...

He could be good to use as a paperweight though.
