When Wobbuffet came out, we saw it was meant for Mirroring and Countering. But I'm sure most of us looked and saw "Type 1/Psychic" and said "WTF?!" Well, I agree it's a stupid idea to make it Psychic, but there is a reason. Because Nintendo wanted to SCREW US!

It's quite simple, actually, and I realized this a while ago. It's because of the weaknesses! Wobbuffet is weak to three types, Bug, Dark, and Ghost. Bug is another story but look at the others.

Ghost attacks are Physical. If Gengar used Shadow Ball on Blobby Wobby, could you Counter it for double damage? Nope! Nothing! Ghost moves are Physical, needless to say that Mirror Coat is uselss. Your Wobbuffet is toast if it Mean Looks and Shadow Balls you! Ouch, huh? But from the Dark type perspective now. For some STUPID reason it's a Special move type. If your opponent's Umby passed a Mean Look to Houndoom, you can bet it's toast! A Crunch will have a base of 240 with weakness and STAB! Wobbuffet can't Mirror Coat it, since Mirror Coat is a Psychic move, and, seeing as Houndoom is a Dark type, you can't Mirror Coat it back.

So, as you see, we got screwed when Wobbuffet was given to us. It's bad enough it's can't really stand up to most things that status you and stuff, and can be chum to most things, but it can't handle it's own weaknesses. Maybe Bug but that's all. This may be an explanation of Dark moves being Special and Ghost being Physical. But that's just my point of view for this semi-pointless topic. Feel free to reply. Ta!

I always assumed they made him psychic type as a little joke, because you have to try and predict the type of move they will use, kind of like being psychic.

The fact that he's psychic may not be very good for battling, but, on the anime I think Wobbuffet really rocks. Always popping out of his Pokéball on his own, if he wasn't psychic he wouldn't be doing that...

Anyway, I thought I maybe heard that you could Mirror Coat an attack back at a dark Pokémon anyway, is there any truth to that? (I could easily be mistakin)

I'm 99.999% sure that you can Mirror Coat back Dark Pokemon, and Counter Ghost types.

you see, it depends on the Pokčmon not the move's type. Dark types are immune to Psychic, therefore a houndoom would take no damage from MC. But if the Cruncher was let's say Ursaring, it would take damage from MC! same for Gegar, being a Ghost type it doesn't take damage from Fighting moves, but a Milktank does! understand?

Who in their right mind would put Shadowball on a Gengar anyway? Now dark types, that's a problem. You can't MC a T-Tar's Crunch. Deal with it. That's what D-Bond is for. I think Nintendo made Wobbuffet a Psychic-type because Psys have no immunities. Wobby needs to take a laxative or something.

I "know" you can't make counter work for against a ghost type. I've seen it. Wobbuffet Vs Ghastly... Ghastly kept Shadow Ballin and nuttin I could do...

I just thought that Mirror Coat might work against the Dark type reguardless of whatever attack they previously used against you (as long as it was special based)... but, I guess that isn't the case... has anyone actually SEEN Mirror Coat fail against a Dark Type?

I did a test. A couple of months ago, I was wondering this, so I got T-Tar and Haunter from the rental and Wobbuffet, then I tried to Counter Shadow Ball, didn't work. I tried MCing Bite, and that didn't work either.

Mirror Coat is a Psychic-type attack and it doesn't affect Dark-types, the same way Psychic moves don't affect Dark-types and no matter what moves the Dark-type uses you still can't Mirror Coat the move back at it.
