Protect and Spite/Encore

Assuming that you are using this on a speedy Pokemon, you can protect yourself with Protect and forces the opponent to use a move. Then you can Spite the move or Encore of it's a stat-altering move (T-wave) to annoy the opponent. I have found that there is quite a trend for powerful, low PP attacks like Cross Chop, Sacred Fire, and AeroBlast.

Any thoughts?

I don't think the game would allow it, since the attack is never used...you'd need to test it....

That's a janky but useful strategy.

Which is what they intended when they put spite in the game.

The problem is that you can't reall assume the monster won't be clobbering you in the meantime. Move analysis goes like this against a beatdown monster:

You use protect.
They use something to beat your ass and miss.

You use spite.
If you are lucky, they don't have any PP left. If you aren't, they get to beat your ass. (what happens if I tell my guy to use a move with one PP and you spite it before I can?)

Assume it doesn't smash you to heck, which it could, depending.

Now it's your turn again. Let's assume that you just drained them of something really strong, but lost between half and a third of your hit points.

You use protect, right?
Then they miss with a different move, which you then try to spite... but it'll probably hit you as well...

I think that you might be better off with a double rester, who won't spend all of their time trading their hit points for the opponents power points: once you have the turn advantage of DT, all you have to worry about is the standard evasion fears: Haze and friends.

Then PP draining would be more useful.

Point is, your guy is a specialist, but I suspect he would be ok in certain situations.

It might work slightly better with a Protect/Disable combo. Just a thought... Even though Disable's accuracy is crap.

There's always Sweet Scent... That'll make it a bit easier to use, and you could at least use it to induce switches, to paralyze everyone...

* ZZTRaider wonders how Mew survived Labor with Mewtwo
I use Mewtwo, and I don't care if you think he's cheap or not. He'll always be on my team (except in situations where Mewtwo is banned for some stupid reason), including on G/S, not for stats, but because I like him as a pokemon. So there!

OOH! I like that! If you use Encore, they will just retreat, but Spite's PP lowering will stay there. I like it!
