well, if you have a SmealGle with SacredFire, couldn't he breed it onto another pokemon?

Because no Pokémon can learn Sacred Fire through breeding, regardless of which Pokémon the move is on.

See here.

<edit>sorry, psybro, posted at the same time</edit>

ho-oh starts with it.
smeargle can sketch anything (but good luck sketching sacred fire).

no one learns it by level.
no one learns it through breeding.
it is not a tm in g/s.
it does not exist in r/b/y.
none of this changes in crystal.

that's all the reasons i can think of.

Oh well....I guess we'll all have to settle with Flamethrower/Fire Blast. Sacred Fire's only real selling point is the 50% chance to BRN. Let's look at the averages...

Flamethrower: 95 power, 99.6% accuracy, 94.6 average
Sacred Fire: 100 power, 94.5% accuracy, 94.5 average
Fire Blast: 120 power, 84.4% accuracy, 101.3 average

O_O. According to this, over a large amount of trials (100, 200, etc...), Flamethrower and Sacred Fire, on average, will do practically the same damage O_O!!! (not factoring in BRN damage). Indeed.

I see burning as a hindrance, really.
That 50% burn chance might look tasty, but you're sure as Hell gonna be pissed off it prevents you from paralyzing or sleeping the opponent.

Bah,look at the stats:

Flamethrower's PP: 15
Sacred Fire's PP: 5

You'll do,overall, thrice the damage by using all your PP with Flamethrower than SF.

Needless to say, IMHO, Flamethrower is probably more practical. There's a five point difference between it's base damage and Sacred Fire (not including STAB). And Ho-oh's Special Attack stat would probably deal out a lot of damage with any Fire attack at and above Flamethrower's base damage. And of course, there's the difference in PP.

Sacred Fire still looks pretty good to me. Burned pokemon get their Attack stat slashed--I think I read it was cut in half. Between the ongoing burn damage and the lowered attack stat, I'd say Ho-Oh can more than hold its own with Sacred Fire...

I might even worry about it, except that I always keep a Tyranitar on my team.

Tyranitar uses Rock Slide! It's super effective! Ho-Oh faints!
