According to move desciption "Attack does 1/4 of opponent's max HP. Will work if opponent is asleep." Theoretically, the opponent will fall in four turns, right?

Wrong.

It takes five turns (without any interference) to KO a pokemon with nightmare. What a rip-off.

Why is this so?

It depends on what the defending Pokemon's max HP are. I assume that if it's a number not divisible by four, then it would take five turns to do it, because Pokemon always rounds down.

Yup, it's the same with Substitute. A Pokemon whose HP % 4 != 0 can survive four Subs or Curse turns. Remember that max HP is always an odd number...
