I've heard its something like 9.8% chance per turn that a frozen pokemon will thaw. Thanks raindance.

Anyone know exactly what the chances are? or should I start working on this with my spare time?

I think the 9.8% chance is only there if Sunny Day is active, or the frozen Pokemon tries to use Flame Wheel.

if a pokemon is frozen and uses flame wheel, doesn't it automatically thaw? cuz that's what happened when my typhlosion was frozen. i used flame wheel and i became unfrozen plus i attacked on the same turn. was this just luck?

No, Flame Wheel ALWAYS thaws you out, thaws your opponent out, and damages the opponent.

I used Ice Punch on this Wartortle freezing him, right? Well, the next turn, HE THAWED OUT! Unless there's a way Wartortle can be bred Flame Wheel...BTW, Sunny Day was not used! Sunny Day only increases the chance of thawing.

Yeah, same thing happened with me. I finally got Ice beam to freeze Lugia, but it thawed out a 2 turns later.

That happened to a Pinsir one time at the "Bug Catching Contest". My Jynx used Power Snow on it, and it was frozen. Two turns later, it "Thawed"...

Freeze needs to be tested more in G/S...anyone up for it?

You automatically thaw if you use Master Flame (Flame Wheel).

There's also a 9.8% chance per turn of thawing while Clear Skies is active.

But there's also a chance of thawing when neither of those are met... unfortunately I do not know the chance.

Did anyone ever work this out?

I thought I'd finally beaten some parafusing bastard in Stadium 2, and it thawed out the very next turn and attacked.

Mmph.

Let me settle this. Here's my research:

Frozen Pokemon's opponent:
All fire attacks WILL thaw the ice. (tested with Ember, Flame Wheel, and Sacred Fire)

When Sunny Day is used, there is a 9.8% chance each turn that the ice will thaw.

Frozen Pokemon:
The frozen Pokemon can only use Flame Wheel and Scared Fire, which WILL melt the ice.

I also have confirmed that both Pokemon in wild battles also appear to thaw on their own.

Nice work Poccil, apart from your big words to start with you just basically re-iterate what everyone else said, barring the people ignoring the question just for an excuse to talk about their thawing experiences.
Your post would have helped if you had actually added new information.

Did they thaw when you used an ice attack on them? I think there might be a connection with that, because I've seen it happen many times when an ice attack was used.

Sunny Day certainly doesn't need to be in effect for thawing to occur, as it happens all the time in Stadium and GSBot. I'd say Sunny Day only increases the chance.

However, I've noticed that with Rain Dance on the go, you can't thaw. I kept a Lugia frozen for like 20 turns while using Rain Dance.

Hmm...this could prove a somewhat invaluable (albeit unreliable) use for Rain Dance and Ice attacks.

you guys aren't gonna like me for this...

when working the sunny day stuff, i noted it was supposed to increase chance of thawing to 10% (or 9.7656%, for those who care). sure enough, some quick tests supported this, so i went with it. now i've decided to do a little more testing, both with and without sunny day. (i'd been neglecting to do it without sunny day because of the time it took to do the first battery of tests. call me lazy.)

i am not including the turn the victim becomes frozen, even though it cannot attack if it does not get the initiative. i am counting the turn the victim thaws, however, since it thaws at the VERY END of that turn.

battle vs. wild raticate, normal conditions:
turns: 726
average turns spent frozen: 10.0833
chance of thawing: 9.9174%
most no. of turns spent frozen: 64
times frozen for only 1 turn: 7

battle vs. wild meowth, sunny day in effect:
turns: 779
average turns spent frozen: 10.8194
chance of thawing: 9.2426%
most no. of turns spent frozen: 53
times frozen for only 1 turn: 11

arena battle vs. wigglytuff, normal conditions:
turns: 342
average turns spent frozen: 14.2500
chance of thawing: 7.0175%
most no. of turns spent frozen: 42
times frozen for only 1 turn: 1

i suspect the arena battle would match the other two better if i'd spent more time on it, but it was much more grueling than the other tests. so from what i can see, 10% looks damned skippy, but it's all the time. sunny day doesn't seem to affect thawing at all. silly me.

Hmmm...interesting stuff, spunman.

By the way...

Uiru: Sunny Day certainly doesn't need to be in effect for thawing to occur, as it happens all the time in Stadium and GSBot.

Keep in mind that GSBot is no more a legitimate testing platform than an RBY PBS site.

Yeah, I know battle sims are only as accurate as the one who codes it, but I also specified Stadium, which is a fairly reliable source for data.

I always thought that Sunny Day might allow 'benched' Pokémon to thaw as well. It was a while ago when I came up with that theory, back when nobody thought there was a chance of thawing without Sunny Day (but Lugia did it frequently ). It was also in that battle when I started trying Rain Dance to keep the sucker frozen, and it seemed to work. However, if you really can stay frozen for 64 turns and then defrost, that might be bunk.
