How do the Badges the Gym Leaders give you effect your Pokémon's stats? For instance, one of them is supposed to raise Attack, but I couldn't see any difference in stats after I obtained it.

I think that badges raise the appropriate stat to 9/8 of normal in GB battles (that is, against wild pokemon and against trainers inside the cart)... but I'm not positive.

Atma is correct. They have no effect in link/Stadium battles.

It helps make Pokemon easier to train in the GB game (the higher stats help build levels). Even though the boost is minimal (multiply the stat by 9, divide by 8), it's almost like gaining 1/2 a level during combat. And when the stats get really high, the badge boost becomes more noticable.

It also explains why in-game trainers are so darn easy.

Yes, that and the fact that most of them (especially R/B trainers) use nearly no TMs, or HMs (Surf/Fly), and tend to use the same type (3 Meowth/2 Grimer and 1 Muk, etc...).
