(It's all common knowledge, but some of you might like an easy-reference guide, like I do.)

The Stripped-Down Breeding FAQ.
Arranged by Cat-Gonk.

------

Disclaimer.

I'd also like to make it clear that none of this information was discovered by myself, I just got it all from other people and put it together for my site and for my own collection of Pokemon data. The clever people who actually did the hard work for this FAQ are listed at the bottom of this text file.

Pokemon is copyright of Game Freak/Nintendo, meeh meeh meeeeeh...

------

The Spearows and the Beedrills (in brief).

Any breedable Pokemon can be bred any move that it learns naturally or through TM, as well as the moves listed below.

Two Pokemon can be bred by giving the male to the old man and the female to the old woman in the Daycare south of Kogane. After a period of time determined by how much walking you do and the willingness of the two Pokemon to get it on (tip, same body types generally means higher sex drive), an egg will have been laid (though some Pokemon appear to be mammals). The old man will be standing outside, talk to him and he'll give you the egg. Warning, this is not RBY, you need a space in your lineup to accept the egg.

The egg will hatch if you carry it around and walk with it. They take some time, which is why breeding chains are often a bad idea and you're better off just buying a Gameshark if you really must have Acid Armour on Magcargot.

There is a chance that of one of the moves that the baby can be bred with is on the father, the baby, being the same specie as the mother, may be born with it in its abilities. Voltorb, Staryu, Magnemite and Porygon are genderless, and therefore cannot breed. Ditto breeds with anything with a resultant offspring of the Pokemon it bred with.

------

The List.

Names were taken from Necrosaro's list, with a few of my own translations in there, ie Mind's Eye for the lock-on move Poliwrath learns, View Thoughts for the move that lets normal/fighting attacks his ghost types as well as negating all Accuracy changers.

Painful Note refers to the move learnt by Poliwag/whirl which imparts an x10 multiplier to Attack at the cost of 50% HP. The AGNP name for this move is Shave Pounds, and I've also heard it referred to as Heart Song.

If you have any queries, e-mail me at catgonk@hotmail.com and I'll do my best to answer. You're best off going to Azure Heights, Pokemon Forever and Pokemon Daily first (the last two URLs escape me but they should be on http://www.azureheights.com somewhere)

Credits.

Kudos to Meowth346 for being able to make and interpret ROMs so damn well, though he did have Houou learning Shadow Ball at one stage. All this info is his, cut right from the ROM.

A merry MEEH to Necrosaro, who wrote the first ever complete English GS moves list, and provided a foundation for the translations.

Thankies to Darryn, who provided this information, helping with the translation-translations (not everyone has the same translation for certain moves) when I couldn't figure out what names he'd given to what, and for all the work he's put into Gold/Silver during his time in the AH Research Forum. I expect to see him and Givera made Azurians when GS is released in English, their position on the forums should give them first pick at research topics.

Hmmm...nice, but you've left out a great deal of relevent info and there are also a few inaccuracies that need correcting.

Here's one: Any breedable Pokemon can be bred any move that it learns naturally or through TM, as well as the moves listed below.

That's not entirely true...certain pokemon cannot learn moves at birth that they can learn later in life (i.e. Herakurosu cannot have Mega Horn at birth). TM's are a different matter; most of my breeding research has proven that TM taught techniques will be passed on to the offspring (if they are compatible with the TM at their earliest evolutionary stage, of course).

Here's another: Voltorb, Staryu, Magnemite and Porygon are genderless, and therefore cannot breed. Ditto breeds with anything with a resultant offspring of the Pokemon it bred with.

Genderless pokemon like Magnemite, Starmie, etc. CAN be bred; but only with Ditto. The exception is "legendary" pokemon (i.e. The Birds, The Cats, Mew, Mewtwo, and Serebii); even Ditto cannot breed with them...

Here's some data you may find helpful (all of which came from my own breeding guide):

Male only:
Nidoran (Male)
Nidorino
Nidoking
Tauros
Baruki
Hitmonchan
Hitmonlee
Kapoera

Female only:
Nidoran (Female)
Nidorina
Nidoqueen
Mirutanku
Muchuuru
Jynx
Kangaskhan
Chansey
Hapinasu

Genderless (No sex):

Can be bred:
Magnemite
Magneton
Staryu
Starmie
Ditto
Voltorb
Electrode
Porygon
Porygon2

Can't be bred:
Annon
Articuno
Zapdos
Moltres
Mewtwo
Mew
Raikou
Entei
Suikun
Lugia
Houou
Serebii

Special case: Nidoqueen and Nidorina are the only pokemon in the game with genders that cannot be bred. The only evolutionary stage that can actually breed is the earliest; the Nidoran Female. (Note: These restrictions do not apply to the male Nidoran, Nidorino, or Nidoking.)

I hope that helped...

So how exactly does this work? For example,if
I breed a Hitmonlee which knows Hi Jump Kick
with Ditto,will I get a Hitmontot(Barugii)
which knows Hi Jump Kick? I did breed Eevee
successfully, but it didn't have Focus Energy
like I wanted.

If I was to breed two Raichu's (or other 3 stage evolved creaure) would you get a Pikachu or a Pichu (or if I bred a Vileplume and a vileplume would it be gloom or oddish?)

Just wondering...

Whatever you breed, for example : Blastoise with Blastoise, the egg will hatch into Squirtle. But I don't know about the Raichu becoming Pichu though.

There is not a chance, if the baby for sure can learn the move through breeding, it will indeed have the move!

That's not entirely true...certain pokemon cannot learn moves at birth that they can learn later in life (i.e. Herakurosu cannot have Mega Horn at birth).

Bugger, I don't know how that slipped through, I know for a fact that Paras can't be born with Spore.

Genderless pokemon like Magnemite, Starmie, etc. CAN be bred; but only with Ditto.

Yeah, that was something I hadn't gotten around to testing.

Male only:
Baruki
Hitmonchan
Hitmonlee
Kapoera

Odd, I'm pretty sure that you can get female Hitmons.

Female only:
Jynx

Heh, even more evidence that a friend of mine has a ferked-up cart, aside from the Haganeru with Recover and Mimicable Sketch that is...

Genderless (No sex):
Annon

Better not tell that to team F__KER though.

I hope that helped...

It did, thanks a lot for the help. I'll put your name in with the others when I update.

Oh, and I forgot to add that HMs seem to take preference over other breedable moves when breeding. Have you experienced that as well?

So Nidorina and Nidoqueen can't be bred with anything? That's odd...

Hi! I can't read Japanese at all so I'm going to have to wait until September to buy the English versions. I have a few questions about the breeding process if anyone wants to answer. What determines if a pokemon you transfer from the RBY versions is a male or female. The most extensive list above says some pokemon are half male, 7/8 male and so forth. Does this mean half the pokemon are males and half female and 7 out of 8 of those pokemon on the list will be male? Just curious! Counting down those days for the Gold and Silver... ::grin::

In G/S there is a thing called "the time-machine" or "time-capsule" which I think lets you trade with old R/B games - do the Pokes from R/B gain a gender when they are "transported"

Gender all depends on a pokemon's Attack Gene and what type he is...
Take Bulbasaur for instance - He's 7/8th Male... Now there are 16 possible values for the Attack Gene (0 - 15) so the top 7/8th (2-15) will all be male... the only Female Bulbasaur's will have a attack Gene of either 0 or 1...
However pokemon like Nidoking and Nidoqueen are always one gender or the other...
