Let's say you have a really beefy Pokémon like Cloyster or Onix. You Harden six times, lending it a modifier of 3 or 999, rounded.

If your opponent uses something like Screech, will it

  1. take 2/3 of your mod, lending 666?
  2. take 2 times the original value, lending 800?

I'd suspect the latter, but the Pokémon team has a reputation for sloppy programming.

No quite sure what you mean... but Cloyster's max defense is 458.

4 | 3.5 | 3 | 2.5 | 2 | 1.5 | 1 | 1/1.5 | 1/2 | 1/2.5 | 1/3 | 1/3.5 | 1/4

After three uses of Harden, it won't have any effect, thus Cloyster maxes out at 3 hardens (999 defense)... So I would assume it stays at the third mod digit no matter how many more times you use it, thus, if a screech is used, it would move back two to the right, making Cloyster's defence 687.

I think that's what you meant..

Harden moves one to the left, not two.

What I meant was whether it calculates the new value with the last one or the original stat.

And I meant to add that the hypothetical Pokémon has 400 for defense, too.

It all affects the original stat.

Here's how it works (IIRC)... Harden will keep moving to the left (Or which ever direction) even after it has no effect (I.E. using harden 3x will max Cloyster's defense out at 999 (458 * 2.5 = 1145) but it will keep moving to the left just having no apparent affect (458 * 3 = 1374 but it still rounds down to 999) until it reaches 6x Hardens (Or 3x Acid Armours)
But once Screech set in they start moving it back in the other direction but you won't notice the defense drop until after 2 uses when it drops from 4x (999) to 2x (916)... after that it will drop to normal (458) then be cut in half (229) etc etc...
Does that explain your question??
