Hey everyone, I just discovered this board, so if a similar topic has been posted already, it ain't my fault!! :PAnyway, here is the topic. I know there are a million ways people say to catch Mew. And of course, heh, I have never had one. :P Anyway, a good friend of mine (I have known him for about ten years) bought Pokémon Yellow, to play in conjunction with Stadium. Now, he had fully beaten Red, but lost his data on it a long time ago, and sold it. Anyway, he starts up his Yellow game, all excited to catch his new monsters and import them into Stadium... he is on the path to the town past Pallet, and he fights a Rattata. After the fight, he keeps walking and... fights a wild Mew. He doesn't know how or why, all he knows is that he hasn't recieved pokeballs in the game yet, so he has to kill it. When he gets pokeballs, he runs back like a madman to the same spot and fights it again after a couple of fights with normal monsters. He catches it. Now I thought he was crazy too, but he called me up right after cathing it. He explained every aspect, including it's weird Yellow PokeDex description ("when viewed under a microscope, it's fine delicate hairs can be seen") to it's stats. Since then, I have actually SEEN his Mew in person several times. Now, I know what you might be thinking: He is lieing, and used a gameshark. Nope, he doesn't own one. And this is something I know. Also, he didn't get it from another friend, because the OT is HIM. And Nintendo has not brought any of their Mew-give away tours to any place near us yet. Finally, keep in mind that he isn't the kind of kid to play little jokes like this on me, we have known eachother so long that we can tell instantly if the other is lieing (and we wouldn't ever lie about something in the first place for this long, though). So what does this mean? I personally think the game glitched up... what else could it be?! Any ideas? Maybe my friend is just the luckiest guy in the world. :P ------------------ Mmmmm it's cheezarific!

Nope, on the gameboy game. Maybe the Mew is only in that specific spot he found it in... I know where it is too, he showed me, but it is hard to describe. It is in one of the first grasspatches past Pallet (though not the first long one). If I rememebr correctly in a specific patch, he fought it twice in the top right most "square" of grass.I know that doesn't help much, and I still think it was probably a glitch that he caught it, but good luck. :P ------------------ Mmmm it's Cheezarific! I didnt SEE him catch it, and I suppose that it is possible he used a Gameshark, but really... I have known the guy for years and years, and he wouldn't lie about this. I really can't give you more than that, and I know that isn't much to go on. Sorry. I have no idea what his rival was named, and I think his pikachu was just Pika. If you have anymore questions, I'd be glad to answer. ------------------ Mmmm it's Cheezarific! "Hey! Okay, thanks and I'm sorry to accuse your friend or anything but I have heard way too many rumors before (the truck method, the evolve a Mewtwo method, the evolve a Houhou method). But if your friend IS telling the truth, master the method and tell everyone! Find out if it can be caught later in the game and not just in the beggining, if it works with different nicks (if it is a glitch, it might be connected to the nick like the Missingno. trick is on Red/Blue), and the exact patch of grass would help immensly. This could be HUGE, and if it was a planned trick then Nintendo has just been hiding it like those push-button codes in Goldeneye that were just released and you will through a huge wrench into Nintendo's plans . In any case, this is huge if its true!------------------ Welcome to DJ Inc., where everything USED to be fine, until this trick. [This message has been edited by Dark Jaguar (edited 04-23-2000).]

Hehe, it is alright. I am sorry I cant get you a better description of all this... But next time I see him, I am going to get him to start his game over and try it again (without saving), since we didnt think of trying that. The thing is, the Mew wouldnt reappear in his game after he had already caught it, but maybe if he starts over...Anyway, I will get back to you all. ------------------ Mmmm it's Cheezarific! "Hey! Why haven't I had him talk to you all in person? Because I just pretty much discovered this bored a while ago, and just decided to post his story. He knows nothing of this site, and I haven't even brought up the fact that I posted his story to him yet. He comes on very rarely, but I'll tell him about the bored.I believe he was on the way of delivering the parcel when he fought the first Mew, then he fought the second Mew after getting pokéballs. After catching it, he could never fight it again no matter how much he tried. Thanks for your patience in listening to all this everyone, I know it can be hard to swallow (trust me, I have been on the opposite end of hearing similar stories like this) and I know I have don't really have concrete info. In the end, it was probably a glitch, but I still thought it was a good topic to bring up, and I appreciate the fact that you all trust my word on the story. ------------------ Mmmm it's Cheezarific! Givera, it did not have transform, and it was at level 2 when he caught it.As for proof, I have none. And I honestly dont see how I COULD have proof, even if I was the one who caught it... what could I do, mail the game to you? :P I know it is hard to swallow, but all I can give you is my word that this is all true. ------------------ Mmmm it's Cheezarific! Well, unlocking Mew is impossible thru the trainer name you give your character at the beginning of the rpg. All the characters accessable for your name cannot trigger 15 unless a shark is used. I made a chart of all the things that can be triggered. Reach me by e-mail for more info. quote: Old Man sets the pokemon being fought to Weedle and the battle mode to old man mode (safari everywhere code with digits of 01). For some reason, it also resets the possible pokemon to the digits of your name and your rival's name.
Does the rival's name affect anything? Back when I did research on this, it didnt do anything... Also, Trading with in-game Pokemon (like Doris the Electrode) triggers Missingno. Note that in-game trading only works within town limits, so trading for MrMime wont trigger missingo quote: Another idea is when you fight in-game trainers, or any event that results in a pokemon fight. Also, other events might result in those bytes being reset.
Nope, dont work.

MewtwoSama that's a VERY interesting piece of information you wrote there, without realizing it. You wrote that it's utterly important that you trade inside a town to trigger a MissingNo. in the Trade Pokemon version. I did some testing before, and traded with various CPU trainers, and always got the exact same MissingNo. However, I did all my trades in the same Cinnabar Island town. Perhaps, each town you trade in, might give you a certain different weird MissingNo. pokemon. And, maybe some of these MissingNo. pokemon's from a certain town might look in a weird memory location that we could alter and put a 15 in for, without Gamesharking. Who knows? Maybe I'll test later.mlmiddleton, I know something extra to add to your info. I know why the Old Man puts your name into the memory location where pokemon species to be encountered wild should be. Or at least partially. If you put in the Gameshark code to change your name (the one you gave me), and LEAVE IT ACTIVE as the Old Man appears, the Old Man's name will change also! For example, I changed my name from ASH to YSH, and if I leave the code active when I talk to Old Man, when he fights it said YLD MAN threw a pokeball! In other words, when you trigger the Old Man demonstration sequence, the game temporarily changes YOUR NAME from ASH or whatever, to Old Man. It also changes your picture, items, etc. Perhaps those changes also affect the MissingNo. somehow (especially your picture, because there always seems to be 1 MissingNo. that won't go away no matter what you name yourself). When the game renames you to Old Man it has to save your real name somewhere in temporary backup storage. Most likely, this backup storage location is the same location as where the game stores a list of which pokemon species you will encounter in the wild. Why this is, I don't know...but both types of data (backup name, temporary list of wild pokemon to be encountered) are temporary, which makes sense. ------------------

mlmiddleton, fighting a CPU trainer does not affect the MissingNo. trick, I had tried it before. I fought the GYM Leader of Cinnabar Island in my test. Only Trading pokemon seems to affect it. Does being GIVEN a pokemon affect it?I have an idea about this new Mew trick. In Pokemon Yellow, if I remember correctly, when you begin a new game, doesn't Professor Oak appear and catch Pikachu? Just like how the Old Man shows you how to catch Weedle. That might trigger a MissingNo. in the same way, although without Surf there needs to be a different way to fight him. BTW, right now it seems logical that two things you could change to a 15 that could make a Mew MissingNo. appear are: your Trainer ID#, or also your Items/Pokemon/Moves/PP. All those things might need to be changed when the Old Man or Prof. Oak sequences begin. I looked, and hex code 15 is a BOULDERBADGE, which doesn't make any sense. But hex code 14 is a plain old Potion, which you do start the game out with right? That is for Blue/Red, are the hex codes the same in Yellow? BTW, does the regular version of the MissingNo. trick still work in yellow? What is the hex code for each of the towns, especially Pallet Town and Viridian City? Any town with hex code 15? ------------------

As far as we know, they have. But who knows? Maybe they are so lazy that they just moved the glitchy area (the coast) to a more unnoticeable place, ie the patch of grass the Mew was in. Maybe, or maybe not. Just a thought... ------------------ Gĺm®GűĄ My site:Pokémon Gamer AIM/AOL: GamrGuy87

Ack, you guys, I am still here. I just don't really use this board, I am mostly on the Nintendorks chatter board. That and I havent been around recently because of Perfect Dark. Seriously, I don't put up stupid jokes on the internet. I don't get any joy out of decieving people. Also, I haven't been commenting much because, quite simply, I don't know much of the Missing No tricks. Lately, my friend Rich (the friend who this discussion is about) and I have only been talking about PD and not Pokémon, but if you need any other information on the topic, I'll be glad to help. Sorry for dissapearing on you guys. Blame PD. ------------------ Mmmm it's Cheezarific! "Hey! Your name can only be seven characters long; where do the other three bytes come from? You'd think a simple one-byte null would suffice...

I got this in an e-mail a few months ago: quote: Built in names like ASH,GARY,JOHN have been cracked. Both R/B built in names follow certain strings. RED ASH JACK NEW NAME BLUE GARY JOHN NEW NAME The blank spaces are intrepreted to HEX/50, Decimal/80 The built in name ASH is intrepreted by game as ASH JACK NE ASH should run into: SH : 146, MISSINGNO. _J : 80, MISSINGNO. AC : 128, Golbat K_ : 138, MISSINGNO. NE : 141, Snorlax GARY should run into AR : 128, Marowak Y_ : 152, MISSINGNO. JO : 137, Clefable HN : 135, Electrode _N : 80, Electrode JOHN should run into OH : 142, Missingno N_ : 141, Missingno NE : 141, Snorlax W_ : 150, Missingno NA : 141, Golduck Apparently, when you enter your own name, there are four characters you cant see. Two of which runs into a L80 Mblockchip. The other two characters need to be researched.

Here's some misc info, in case it helps anybody:When you battle a Pokémon, and RUN or DEFEAT the Pokémon, it writes the Pokémon in that location to the RAM. However, if you talk to the Old Man, it writes your name to the first ten hex (first five PKMN) of that data. Those are the only two ways that I can think of to re-write the data there in the RAM. So, if you talk to the old guy, then walk in some grass along Route 3, you can still fly over to Cinnabar Island and fight the MissingNo. as long as you didn't actually encounter any Pokémon in the grass at Route 1. The weird part is that fighting a Tentacool along Route 21 imprinted the data for the Pokémon south of Pallet. I would figure that it wouldn't change anything. --Meowth346 ------------------ Totodile, go! Oh no, he's got a Granbull! Totodile, return! Who should I choose next, Murkrow, Igglybuff, or Espeon? Confused?
